Chapter 5

Author: Washing Wheat
Tinsley's school uniform was unbuttoned at the collar and hung wide open to reveal red hickeys, like taboo flowers marking her skin.

I knew why she was here and said, "I don't have time."

Tinsley shot Henry an awkward glance before she suddenly said, "I know why you're mad at me. You like Asher, don't you?"

Before I could respond, I felt Henry's entire body tense slightly as he cast me an unreadable look.

This was unbelievable.

I grabbed him, leaned close to his ear, and hissed under my bre

Tinsley smiled. "Have you slept with Henry yet? You're still a virgin, right?"You know, Asher really loves me. He's always believed I've been saving myself for him. If I sleep with him, if I'm still a virgin, he'll take me abroad with him to study."The school had protected Tinsley's privacy. Apart from a few people, no one knew the real reason for her suspension.Whatever Tinsley had injected into me was taking effect. My body burned, but I kept breaking out in cold sweat. Everything in front of me blurred."Tinsley, are you stupid? He's lying to you!" I snapped."I might as well try. What if it works? If it does, I can finally get away from this town, that bar hostess, and all those men who've been eyeing me since I can remember!""Asher wants you! How are you going to fool him?" I questioned.Tinsley stood up suddenly and pulled open a curtain beside her. When I turned my head, I realized we were in a motel room. Despair washed over me as I saw Asher slumped on the bed,

Tinsley desperately searched Truman's for any trace of malice or resentment.Soon, she slumped her shoulders in defeat.I stepped closer and patted her gently, whispering, "Don't lose heart. The show's just getting started."I held my phone up to James and played the video. The moment the recording started, everyone's expressions changed.Tinsley stared at me in disbelief, screaming hysterically, "Why, Gia? Why do you always have to ruin things for me? You always ruin everything!"She lunged at me, shrieking and trying to grab the phone.A crisp, loud slap cut through the air, and everything quietened down.Henry's expression turned cold as he dropped his hand. "Gia has helped you since you were kids. Mr. Hayes helped you, and Mr. Bell trusted you. "You're the one who keeps throwing your life away. How do you have the nerve to blame anyone else? Your mom made mistakes, sure—but the biggest one was bringing you into this world."Henry's father had severe kidney disease. One

Henry pulled me out of his arms. When he thought about how I'd instinctively slipped my phone into my pocket, he ground his teeth and snapped, "Gia, can you not be so dumb? Take care of yourself first, okay?"I looked guiltily at the bruise on his arm—the one he got shielding me—and said quietly, "The phone can't break. Besides, the Nexo 4 is expensive."Henry let out a laugh of disbelief. "I'll buy you ten of them someday.""Mr. Bell, Mr. Hayes tried to assault me!" Tinsley scrambled up from the floor, clutching the hem of her shirt. Her tears fell almost as if on cue.Blushing with embarrassment, she clutched her chest, drawing James' attention to the button that had come undone.James erupted in fury in an instant, his face red with anger. He looked at Truman in disbelief, then at Tinsley."Tinsley, don't say things like that! Mr. Hayes isn't that kind of person! Do you even know what you're saying?" he snapped.Tinsley lifted her head, looking at James with despair in her ga

Tinsley looked exhausted. Her waist had thickened a little too.The youthful glow around her seemed to be fading.I felt my heart sink. "How long have you been here?" I asked.Tinsley didn't answer the question. She looked at me, her eyes dark as night. "School's over. What are you still doing here?"Henry had caught up to me by now.My racing heart slowly steadied.Tinsley probably hadn't done anything bad yet. That was because James Bell, the head of security, hadn't been alerted yet. He was still in the security room, sipping his tea."I forgot my key and locked myself out, so I came to borrow Mr. Hayes' phone," I explained.Tinsley lowered her eyes. "You go ahead first."Her thin frame was wrapped in an oversized uniform, and she had no bra on. One of her hands was gripping something tightly behind her back. The edge of something red and purple peeked out."Okay," I said.Truman looked surprised to see me walk in. After I gave him my excuse, he kindly handed over his

I fell into deep thought after that.I didn't know much about Tinsley's life outside of school. But if her child wasn't Kieran's, I could understand why, when I showed Kieran the child's photo in my dying moments, he only grew more unhinged. What had I said back then?I said, "Look, Kieran, the child looks so much like you."As I stared at the young Kieran's clean-cut face in front of me, I suddenly realized—they looked nothing alike! In my past life, the young Kieran ended up in trouble for intentional injury, and the plaintiff's name was Edward… Clark?"Kieran, that friend of yours with the disease—what's his name?""Edward Clark isn't my friend anymore!" Kieran retorted. My gaze couldn't help but drift toward the distance."What are you looking at?" Kieran asked."Melodrama," I said. "I'm looking at a big, big vat of melodrama.""Why were you looking for Tinsley? Do you like her?" I asked again.Kieran shook his head. "She stole the bracelet my grandmother left me. If an

Henry's gorgeous eyes suddenly glinted with a sly smile. "You should worry about yourself instead, Gia. Think you can work on your essay over summer break?"I looked into his eyes and froze for a moment.Damn it! Why was he so good-looking?After I snapped back to my senses, I punched him in the arm and ran off with my head down.Behind me, Henry started laughing for no apparent reason.Ugh. Even that sound was nice!…Someone had been following me for days, both on my way to and from school.Today, that person seemed to be losing patience. My heart was racing, and my palms were sweating. I picked up my pace, ducking and weaving into a secluded alleyway. It was so annoying! I was all hyped up, but I still had to make sure he was following. That was right. I was trembling from excitement!I crouched down and pulled the knife my mother used for gutting fish out of my heavy backpack. The moment my hand closed around the handle, I finally smiled sweetly.Kieran followed me int
