~ ISABELLA~

For a full five seconds, I forgot how to breathe.

Then my body made the decision for me. I yanked the sheet up to my chin and scrambled backwards until my shoulder blades hit the headboard.

Isaac Moretti didn't move. He lay on his side with one arm bent under his head, watching me like I was a play he had already seen the ending of. His black hair stuck up on one side and there was stubble along his jaw. Without his team jacket and his usual scowl, he looked less like the terror of the RED RACKETS and more like a man who had slept for maybe an hour.

"You'll hurt yourself," he said. "It's a hotel headboard. It isn't padded."

"Where's Alan?"

It was the first thing out of my mouth, and I saw it land. Something flickered across his face, too quick to read.

"So you do remember who it was," he said. "Good. That makes this shorter."

"Makes what shorter?"

He sat up. The sheet slid down to his waist and I stared very hard at the ceiling. When I risked a glance, I saw he was wearing trousers. Thank God.

"Alan knocked on my door at two in the morning," Isaac said. "He looked like he'd seen a ghost. He told me you'd been drugged. That you walked into his room out of your mind, and that he couldn't..." He stopped, his jaw working. "That he couldn't stop it."

Heat crawled up my neck. Every detail of last night came back at once, and none of it was Alan's fault.

"I started it," I said. "He asked me what I wanted. I told him."

"I know. He said that too." Isaac's voice was flat. "It doesn't change anything."

"Is he okay?"

"He's in my room, staring at the wall like it owes him money."

I winced. Then something landed on my knees. My dress, wrinkled but in one piece.

"Bathroom," Isaac said. "Get dressed. We're not done talking."

I didn't argue. I locked myself in the bathroom and stared at the girl in the mirror. Hair in a wild mess. Lips a little swollen. A faint mark on my collarbone that I did not want to think about. Six feet of exhaustion and bad decisions.

'Get it together, Isabella.'

I splashed cold water on my face, pinned my hair up with the few pins I could find, and stepped back out.

Isaac had pulled on a white undershirt. He was leaning against the desk with his arms crossed, and I had to look up at him even in my heels. Not many people made me do that.

"How much do you know about the conduct code?" he asked.

"Enough. No hookups between teammates at league events."

"Article nine." He nodded. "Two players from the same team caught together at a league event get struck from the roster. Both of them. For the whole season."

My stomach dropped. "So Alan and I..."

"Are finished. Unless." He paused. "There's a clause almost nobody remembers. If the captain is involved, the captain answers for it. Only him. He takes the discipline, and the players stay."

It took me a second.

"Nothing happened between us," I said slowly.

"Nothing happened," Isaac agreed. "Not one thing. But by the time you walk out of that door, you spent the night with me."

I stared at him. The last time Isaac Moretti had said more than five words to me, he had told me my skating form was sloppy.

"Why would you do that for him?"

"For my roster." He said it like it was obvious. "Alan is the best young player in this state. And you're a decent forward when you're not mouthing off. I'm not losing two players over somebody else's crime."

"That's it?"

"That's it. Don't read into it, Sinclair."

"Wouldn't dream of it."

His eyes narrowed, as if he suspected I was laughing at him. I wasn't. Not really.

"Who gave you the drink?" he asked.

I hesitated.

In my head, I could see a smile with too many teeth, and amber eyes. And behind him, a shadow with Phillip's face. But I had no proof. And Isaac was Clara's brother. I couldn't say a word about Phillip without something to back it up.

"I didn't get a name," I said.

"Would you know him again?"

"Yes."

"Then tell me what he looks like."

"No."

The room went very quiet.

"It's my problem," I said. "I'll deal with it my way."

"It stopped being only your problem when it landed on my team."

But he didn't push. He just looked at me for a long moment, and I had the strange feeling he was filing something away.

"For now," he said.

I nodded and reached for my clutch. When I stood too fast, the room tilted. A hand caught my elbow, steady and warm, and was gone the second I found my feet.

"You're shivering," Isaac said. He took his suit jacket off the back of the chair and held it out.

"I'm not."

"Sinclair."

I took it. It smelled like cedar and cold air.

"Chin up," he said. "Don't explain anything. Whatever anyone says out there, you let me talk."

"Since when do you—"

A fist pounded on the door.

We both went still.

"Isabella!" It was Phillip, loud enough to carry down the entire hallway. "I know you're in there! Somebody saw you go in!"

Isaac looked at me.

Slowly, he reached for the handle.

~ ISABELLA~I pressed myself back against the wall beside him, heart hammering, and watched Veronica pull something small and metallic from her pocket. It was a tool of some kind, glinting under the lights and bend low over the frame of my racket like she had all the time in the world to get it right.I was halfway to crossing the hall before Leonardo's hand closed around my arm."Don't," he said, low. "If you go over there now, they'll just claim you're accusing them of nothing. Better they think they got away with it.""They're sabotaging my equipment, Leonardo. I'm not just going to let that slide.""I didn't say let it slide. I said don't hand them the moral high ground by making a scene before you've even proven anything." His grip eased, but he didn't let go entirely. "Trust me. I know exactly how fast Veronica can turn a situation around on paper."He was right, infuriatingly, the way he so often was about things that had nothing to do with hockey and everything to do with re

~ ISABELLA~I got good at avoiding Isaac over the next two weeks. Not obviously, just nothing that would get either of us talked about more than we already were. I scheduled my drills on the far end of the rink. I answered his texts about lineups with single words. I stopped lingering after practice the way I used to, back when lingering hadn't felt like standing too close to something I couldn't explain again. He let me do it, which somehow bothered me more than if he'd pushed back. Once, in the locker room, I caught him watching me across the room with an expression I couldn't read, and the second our eyes met, he looked away so fast I almost convinced myself I'd imagined it. Almost.Alan noticed too, though he was kind enough not to say much about it beyond the occasional raised eyebrow whenever Isaac and I ended up on opposite ends of a drill that used to pair us together without anyone thinking twice. The open games had their own calendar, separate from the regular league. Compr

~ ISABELLA~I sat up too fast, which my skull punished immediately, and squinted toward the door in time to see Isaac standing in my living room like he had every right to be there."How did you get in here?" I demanded."Your door was unlocked." His eyes weren't on me. They'd gone straight past me, to the kitchen, where Alan stood frozen with two mugs of coffee in his hands and an expression like he'd been caught doing something far worse than making breakfast."It wasn't unlocked," Alan said slowly. "You have a key?""I have the spare from when you had the flu last winter and I had to bring the playbook by. I never gave it back." Isaac's voice stayed level, but something underneath it wasn't. "I didn't expect to need an excuse to use it.""You don't," I said, rubbing my temples. "You just need to knock next time. Preferably not at—" I squinted at the clock on my wall. "Eight in the morning, Isaac. What are you even doing here?""Checking on you." His gaze finally landed back on me,

~ ISABELLA~The note stayed folded in my jacket pocket for three days before I finally threw it away, somewhere between telling myself it meant nothing and telling myself it meant everything. Neither version changed what I actually had to do, which was get up every morning and act like my life hadn't quietly turned into something I needed to watch my back for.The season opener was close enough now that I could feel it in my shoulders every time I laced up — a different calendar entirely from the regular leagues, shorter and meaner, the kind of schedule that didn't leave much room to recover from a bad week before the next one started. Which made it the perfect excuse, really, for what I wanted to do.I found Alan after practice, toweling off his neck, still moving like a man who hadn't quite decided whether full-time minutes agreed with him yet."Dinner," I said. "My treat. You've more than earned it.""You don't have to do that.""I know I don't have to. I want to." I nudged his sho

~ ISABELLA~He looked like he wanted to say something, but then thought against it and left while I heaved a sigh of relief as I walked away.Phillip's forty-eight hours ran out on a Saturday.I know because I counted them, the way you count down to a storm you can see on the horizon but can't do anything about yet. I half expected him to drag it out, to make a scene on his way off the property, something theatrical enough to match the version of himself he liked to perform for an audience.Instead, he just disappeared."Housing's already cleared," Coach Reyes told the team Monday morning, arms crossed, voice carefully flat in the way adults use when they're deciding how much of the truth a room actually needs. "Moved out sometime Saturday night. Didn't leave a forwarding address.""That's it?" Danny asked. "He's just gone?""His phone's disconnected. His parents say they haven't heard from him either." Reyes's jaw tightened. "If anyone hears anything, you come to me. Not each other.

~ ISABELLA~Alan set the laptop on the long table, his hands steadier than his voice had been, and turned the screen toward the council."This is from the loading dock camera outside the equipment room," he said. "Three nights before the locker incident."The footage was grainy, timestamped, black and white. For a second, nobody moved. Then the picture clarified enough to make out two figures under a flickering security light, one was unmistakably Phillip, broad-shouldered, head tipped back in that easy laugh I used to think was charming. The second figure was smaller, hood pulled up, but when she reached to take the bag from his hands, the hood slipped.Clara.The room went so quiet I could hear the laptop's fan whirring."Pause it," Ilić said, her voice tight.Alan paused it on a frame that left no room for doubt. Phillip's face, clear. Clara's face, clearer. The bag between them, open just enough to show foil packaging I recognized down to the color."That's not—" Phillip started.
