Jason's voice was as cold as ice. With no love in his eyes for the past ten years he slid the divorce papers across the glass table. His mistress, Emily, stood beside him, her hands delicately resting on her belly in a protective embrace.
“You're useless,” Jason sneered as he leaned back in his chair. I can't even give you a kid. You're nothing without me. Just sign the papers, take your shoddy suitcase and leave my house.
I could hardly keep my hands from shaking as I looked at the papers. I had been a friend to this man, and lent him my youth, and my business experience. This was my thanks?
I whispered, "You planned this! You were going to abandon me as soon as she became pregnant.
Yes, of course I did!" He laughed, a bitter mirthless chuckle. Now, you sign or I’ll throw you out?
I rose, my vision dazzled with tears. I picked up my coat and didn't want them to see me cry. I said I would go, my voice trembled. But I hope you two rot in hell!
I headed for the front door but a peculiar metal scent was detected in my nose. Just as I turned around there was a whoosh in the house. The floorboards ignited. The whole living room was soon filled with smoke.
I tried to run back but the fire was too swift and I shrieked. I could see through the flames, but I saw Jason grabbing Emily and dragging her out the back door. He didn't even turn his head to look at me. He left me to die.
The temperature was so high that it was a problem. I had a burn on my skin and smoke in my lungs. I fell to the ground, my eyes closed, I was burning.
I perished in the blaze but my tale was just starting.
I gasped and I jumped out of bed.
My hands were on my chest, rubbing my skin, as if to wipe away something. No burns. No pain. My heart was beating so hard in my ribs I felt like I was holding onto a trapped bird in my ribs and couldn't get rid of it, and my body was sweating profusely. I picked up my cell phone from the bedside table and fumbled with my fingers on the screen to unlock it.
Date: May 15th.
I choked on the words in my mouth. On June 14th, the apocalypse started. I was just 30 days away from the end of the world. I was alive. I was reborn.
Suddenly, a bright blue screen of consciousness appeared in my mind.
[Ding! System Activated: Stockpile Space.]
Current capacity: 10m².
I blinked, and a mental image of just a plain empty gray room came into my mind. There was no need this was overly complicated or Sci-Fi. It was a little, hidden storage box. It was the oasis of life to me.
I didn't cry. I didn't spend one minute regretting things. I left my bed, dressed and walked straight to the bank.
Jason was still sleeping, dreaming of his new life with Emily. I approached the teller and we all withdrew the $300,000 that we had saved collectively. Next, using information from the future, I purchased a winning lottery ticket for a sum of precisely $1,000,000.
At noon, I was in front of Jason with the signed divorce papers in my hands.
"You signed them?" I looked at Jason with an astonished look, he raised his eyebrow. "No tears? No begging? Just like that?"
“Just Sign,” I said, my voice emotionless.
He smiled, hastily signing his name on the papers and imagining that he had won. "Good, now leave, I have to plan a wedding.
I walked away from his life never to see him again. Little did he know that he has just ceded away his only lifeline.
I made it right to the city's biggest wholesale market.
I took one of the trolleys and loaded it with instant noodles. Then another. And another. I purchased a case of bottled water, canned meat, basic supplies and an extensive first aid kit. I purchased a small camping stove, a hunting knife and a water purifier.
I took my card out, and took everything with me into my 10 square meters. The boxes disappeared into nothingness and piled neatly in my brain's warehouse. It was easy, straightforward and rewarding.
I was in the middle of purchasing a truck-load of instant noodles when I noticed the television in the store.
“Widespread panic as reports emerge of a new weird, aggressive virus in the northern hemisphere…”
I smiled. It had started sooner than I believed.
My cellphone rang in my pocket. It was Jason. He was surely yelling at me because of the lack of funds in the bank.
I hit decline.
So, Jason, have a great next three weeks! At the end of the world, I'll be the only one laughing.
It moved quicker than anyone its size should. It charged at me, massive claws swinging through the air. I dived to the left and rolled across the cold metal floor as its fist smashed into the concrete wall. The impact caused the concrete to crumble into dust."Open fire!" Adrian shouted.Bullets ripped through the creature's reinforced skin. Sparks flew, but it didn't do much damage. The creature roared and swung its big arm. It sent Trent flying into a pile of crates."Trent!" I screamed."I'm okay!" He groaned as he pulled himself out of the debris. "Just bruised."I reached into my space and pulled out a grenade. I quickly pulled out the pin and chucked it into the creature's mouth."Down!"The explosion was muffled as it was inside the creature's body. It took a few steps back as it shook its head. Smoke poured from its mouth but it didn't fall over."That didn't work!" Finn shouted."I'm going to hit it harder!" I screamed.I pulled out my rocket launcher and aimed at the creatur
The Dome. The Council. The Final Phase.I still hear these words in my head as I gaze down at the land of the south from the balcony of Silas's fortress. It seemed to me that this was the end of the war, but it wasn't. They were all pawns of the Syndicate and Commander Vance. Servants to a far greater, far older foe.We have a problem," Finn said to me, moving up alongside. His face was grim, and he had a tablet in his hands. I've been studying the satellite, "the Dome isn't just a city, but a fortress. It has an automation system for defense, it has a geothermal power grid, and a communication array which reaches everywhere in the world."Can we get in?" I asked.Finn said, "Not easily. There is only one access tunnel on the south side, protected by a swarm of drones and turrets. If we attack at the front, we will be vaporized before reaching the tunnel.I thought for a moment. How's the weather? Can we take advantage of it?Finn retrieved a weather map. “It's a blizzard coming up fr
There was only the sound of burning cars and groans from the injured.I stood above the crater where Silas had stood seconds earlier. All that was left of him was a burnt patch of land and broken chainsaw axe."Get the prisoners and disarm them. Send them to the trucks. I will sort them out later."Adrian nodded and gestured to our soldiers. The raiders were disarmed and led to a makeshift prison area. They were a broken bunch without Silas leading them.Approaching me was Victoria, her once spotless white attire was now dusty and covered in blood. She looked drained."So..." she said, her voice raspy. "You actually did it.""No, we did. Your soldiers fought well."Her eyes showed respect. "What happens now? What happens to Silas's land?"Silas had ruled over the whole southern half of the continent. An enormous amount of land packed full of resources, survivor camps and thousands of slaves."We will free them. We will give the slaves their freedom, give out the food and create a new
The Citadel was an impressive feat of post-apocalyptic architecture.Constructed upon the remains of a large country club, the place was enclosed by a huge wall of reinforced concrete and steel. The roof tops were covered in solar panels and the main courtyard had a working fountain with clean water flowing from it, so it was like a piece of the old world. We pulled up outside the main entrance of the Citadel in our rickety trucks. We stepped out and Adrian, Trent and Jason were at my sides with their guns holstered, but their hands near their belts.A guard wearing a spotless black uniform walked up to us and looked us up and down. He made a face at our dusty clothing and scuffed boots."State your business." He said in a cold voice."I'm here to see Victoria. Tell her Sarah is here."He raised an eyebrow but didn't argue. He spoke into his radio and after a few minutes the heavy steel gates opened. We were escorted into the compound. Inside was even more luxurious. People were chill
We were doing great. Our crops were growing, our goats were plump. Our community had trebled in size becoming such a busy town. We had vaccinated over 5,000 survivors and the Syndicate were finally becoming a thing of the past.Unfortunately in the apocalypse there is no peace. The alarm went off just after midday. It wasn’t the shrill tones of infected, it was the deep horn that signalled armed intruders.I was in the barn making sure the animals were okay when I heard a bang as Adrian came rushing in. He looked serious with his rifle in hand."We’ve got company. There’s thirty vehicles and they’re heavily armoured. They’re flying a red flag with a black skull."My blood ran cold. "Raiders?"Adrian shook his head. "Worse. It’s Silas."Silas was the Warlord of the South. He used to be a Cartel leader who had built up an empire. He had thousands of men under his command, along with a bunch of armoured vehicles. He was known for being extremely cruel. He would take supplies from us but
The train screeched to a halt.We stepped off onto the icy cold air and found ourselves staring up at the long flat airstrip cracked concrete which had been carved out of the frozen landscape. There was a huge military transport plane – a C-130 – parked on the tarmac along with fuel trucks surrounding it. The plane’s propellers were already whirring, as Syndicate soldiers loaded crates onto the ramp.Standing at the ramp, with heavily armed guards either side of her was Elena Vance."There she is," I heard Adrian whisper, placing a pair of binoculars into my hands. "And look, she’s got someone with her."I looked through the binoculars. Jason was standing beside her, his head bowed, with two guards either side of him. His hands were tied behind his back. He was a prisoner."I would’ve thought he’d have learned to stay away from traps," Trent muttered."I guess," I replied. "But at least he gave us some time. Now we know where she is and that the plane is still grounded."We were heav
