Stockpiling

As soon as I reached Legion Tech, I went straight to the research division. I took the elevator to the restricted research floor and used my access card at the security door.

After entering the code, the steel cabinet opened and revealed several sealed containers. My fingers trembled slightly as I picked up the first container. “Got you.”

Although my other colleagues were out of state, I knew they could return anytime. If I took everything with me, they might notice and immediately start searching for them.

So, I emptied 1000 chips into my backpack. I’d come for the rest later if I was able to.

“Where are you off to?” Jenny, another intern asked as I rushed out of the building.

Back in my apartment, I divided the tiny chips into groups of 100. Leaving 200 in my apartment, I planted the rest in different places I had access to. One of them being the bunker in my grandfather’s old and abandoned warehouse.

I wasn’t foolish enough to keep everything in one place. If someone discovered one batch, they would find some chips but not all of them.

After that, I called a popular realtor and went to inspect the most favorable house in the area. It was in a less populated area, slightly away from the city.

The unfinished luxury house stood in the middle of a large piece of land surrounded by an ordinary perimeter wall. Construction had stopped months ago, leaving parts of the exterior unfinished.

As I stepped out of my car, the system immediately analyzed it.

[Property detected.]

[Land area: Suitable.]

[Existing structure: Incomplete luxury residence.]

[Defensive potential: High.]

[Recommendation: Purchase.]

“I already decided.”

The realtor finalized everything and I had the house the next day.

[Primary base location selected.]

[Begin fortification?]

I didn’t hesitate. “Yes.”

[System will use newbie package to begin fortification.]

[Host will need to kill infected to gain points later.]

“Okay,” I said.

The system gave me a list of upgrades and construction requirements. The first was the perimeter wall.

[Upgrade available: Reinforced perimeter wall.]

[Estimated completion: 18 hours.]

[Material requirement: Steel, concrete, reinforcement materials.]

I approved it. After that came the gate, heavy security doors, drainage. I also created an underground storage.

[Underground vault available.]

My eyes narrowed. “How deep is it?”

[Recommended depth: 8 meters.]

“Can it store temperature-sensitive materials?”

[Yes.]

“Do it.”

The system marked the location under the house. The vault would be large enough for the things I couldn’t afford to lose. The chips, important documents, medical supplies and all the things I knew would become priceless after the apocalypse.

As the system planned the upgrade, I pulled out my phone and started making calls. I ordered food, water, batteries, solar equipment, drugs, and many other things. For some items, I had to go directly to the sellers and make my orders there.

I arranged for most things to be delivered in bulk over the next few days. When suppliers asked questions, I told them was preparing for a long-term property renovation or a party, whatever seemed more reasonable for the item.

When the first truck arrived and everything was loaded inside, the system spoke again..

[Food supplies detected.]

[Estimated duration: 74 days.]

I frowned.

“Only seventy-four?”

[Recommendation: Increase stockpile.]

“Obviously.”

After that, I went out and made more orders.

I watched the workers move everything inside while the system quietly organized the storage areas. Hannah called my phone thrice but I didn’t pick up. I just watched the phone ring.

Then she sent a message. [Where are you? You’ve been acting strange.]

I deleted the message as the system chimed.

[Base construction: 14% complete.]

I was outside when a delivery truck suddenly pulled into the driveway. I reversed. At the same time, a car came around the corner of the road. I hit the brakes and the other driver did the same.

Our cars stopped less than a meter apart. “Seriously?”

As I got out, the other driver opened his door.

My heart leapt when I saw the face. It was Tom Edwards. Of all the people in the city, it had to be him. Tom Edwards was the richest man in the city. I knew him because he was my grandfather’s doctor and he defended me in the apocalypse.

He stared at my car, then at the massive unfinished house behind me.

“Miss Peller?”

“Mr. Edwards.”

He looked around. “What are you doing here?”

I glanced at the house. “I bought this house.”

His eyebrows rose. “Why?”

“Because I like it.”

“This place needs a fortune to finish.”

“I know.”

“You could buy a complete luxury house for less,” he continued.

“Maybe but I like this one.”

“Why are you buying so many things, though?”

“The world is changing,” I said before getting back in my car and driving off.

I had to be at the shooting range. In my previous life, I had suffered a lot because I didnt know how to shoot. I had to kill zombies from a close range, which was disgusting.

“Have you shot before?” Paul, the instructor asked.

“No.”

I picked up the firearm he handed me and listened carefully as he explained the basics.

My hands were steady but my mind was running wild as I thought of how disapoiniing my end had been. Now that I had a second chance, I was not going to die so fast.

  • Reborn With Zombie Control Chips    The pretty girl we saved

All was quiet in the next two days. Jolie and her grandmother were always together. Whenever I felt like having some company, I would join them.Eventually, I told Tom everything about the zombie chips. I was afraid that the company might be able to track them somehow. If they did, I wanted him to know what might happen. After I told him everything, Tom didn’t become as frightened as I was. He told me everything would be okay.It was at that point that I began to appreciate having a strong man around. If I had given this information to Jolie, I was pretty sure she would have hyperventilated and said things that would scare me even more. Tom made me feel somehow safe, as safe as one could feel in the apocalypse. Sleeping was slightly hard because I kept wondering if life would be easier without the chips. Maybe I could take them back of keep all of them out of the home. The people who made those chips could make better technology that could destroy my home. Just thinking about the sur

  • Reborn With Zombie Control Chips    Was the outbreak planned?

I spent the night tossing and turning in my bed, unable to stop thinking about the new mission from the system. Investigating things in the apocalypse only led to nothing but trouble. I had planned to just chill and enjoy my life this apocalypse. But then again, to enjoy without worrying, I needed a stronger base and weapons. I had to gain survival points to unlock better weapons and stronger base fortifications.[MISSION: INVESTIGATE ORGANIZED SURVIVOR ACTIVITY IN THE EASTERN DISTRICT.]But why would the system want me to investigate another group of survivors? What was so important about Hailville district?I was still thinking about it when I walked into the kitchen the next morning. Tom was already there.“Looks like someone didn’t get much sleep,” he commented.“Good morning to you too.” I said with a heavy sigh.He smiled and pushed a cup toward me. “Coffee.”“Thank you.” I said, picking it up.“Looks like you didn’t sleep much.”“Neither did you.”“I’m a doctor. I’m used to thi

  • Reborn With Zombie Control Chips    System, get rid of these fools

Standing in front of the security monitor, I stared at Victor and the people standing behind him. A red notification appeared in the corner of my eye.[WARNING: SYSTEM STABILITY 18%.][SYSTEM SHUTDOWN IMMINENT.]I put my head in my hands, feeling scared. “How do I stop this?”[100 SURVIVAL POINTS REQUIRED TO RESTORE BASIC SYSTEM STABILITY.]I stared at the number and shook my head. One hundred survival points were a lot. But if I didn't get them, I knew most system functions would shut down and that would put me in danger. The base defenses would weaken of even fail.Shit. If I didn’t get more points, even the zombie-control interface would pause or fail. No. I wasn’t losing that, not after finally proving that the chips worked. The chips alone wouldn’t be that helpful to me.Through the security monitor, I turned to victor and pressed the intercom. “What do you want?”Victor stepped closer to the gate and raised his hand. “Open this gate.”“Not gonna happen.”“We need supplies,” he

  • Reborn With Zombie Control Chips    The visitors

I thought the system could protect my house when I was not around. How could it get compromised?I stayed behind the abandoned vehicle for another few minutes, watching the gate for any sign of activity.I couldn’t hear anyone on the other side. Slowly, I realized no one had passed through. I glanced at the driver’s seat and saw a figure emerge. suddenly, the driver’s door of the first truck opened and Tom Edwards got out. What? He was the last person I expected at my house. I mean he was rich and even if the apocalypse has caught him unawares, he had lots of connections. Pretty sure they were some desperate people willing to run errands for the stinking rich. Then I remembered Tom had seen me stocking up supplies. Did he come to rob me? Did he have military weapons?I wanted to hide but he had already seen me. “Misa Peller,” he said. He was wearing a dark blue shirt with the sleeves rolled up. He looked weary, as if he was a hundred days into the apocalypse and not one. Rich boy w

  • Reborn With Zombie Control Chips    Testing the chips

After they left, I went to have breakfast while monitoring the situation outside. I wanted to step out but needed to do it when the infected were scarce in the neighborhood. From what I remembered in my previous life, they wouldn’t stay in one place for long. The larger groups were already moving toward the city center, following the noise created by panicking survivors, emergency vehicles, and the endless stream of people trying to escape. That left my area unusually quiet, creating the perfect opportunity to test the chips.I stood inside my garage with one of the tiny neural-control chip between my fingers. It was so tiny that anyone who saw it would probably wonder why I was treating it like it was worth more than gold.In the apocalypse it was better than gold. If they worked, I could even create a zombie army to protect me and also I could send them to collect supplies and attack my enemies. After checking my weapon, I put several chips into the small pouch attached to my belt a
