When he saw that it was Amelia, the look in his eyes returned to indifference.

Omgosh! I just figured it out. You, dear author, are not having your characters have a conversation. You are having their dialogue move the plot along. He is talking about custody—his plot. She is talking about no longer being afraid of Nicole—her plot. No wonder the dialogue is so bad.
