Chapter 3

Author: Hunk Alert
For the next three days, I became Isabella's shadow again. But this time, my heart was in a completely different place.

I watched her flirt with Jasper in the backseat, laughing at the clumsy jokes he kept throwing her way. Then, I watched her slip a limited-edition watch onto his wrist.

Every moment lined up perfectly with the past.

Only this time, it didn't twist my chest in pain. The old me would have hidden in some dark corner with my fists clenched as I hurt in silence. Now, it all felt like a silent film playing out in front of me, one that had nothing to do with me anymore.

Then, while we were driving to the trade show rehearsal site, danger appeared out of nowhere. A runaway truck tore through the guardrail, heading straight for our car.

I kicked the door open and yanked Isabella out just in time.

Almost at once, black-clad men with knives appeared from every direction, cutting off every escape. Amid the blur of flashing blades, I shielded her and Jasper, who was already pale with fear, as we retreated step by step.

A knife, its steel blade gleaming coldly, shot silently toward Jasper's back at a lethal, precise angle.

"Jasp, look out!" Isabella screamed, and a sudden, violent force slammed into my side.

She shoved me without hesitation, straight into the path of the blade. I dodged on reflex, but the shove threw me off balance. The knife sank deep into my right shoulder.

Agonizing pain shot through me, and blood soaked through my shirt. Even though I had seen it coming, the familiar sting of betrayal still shot through my chest.

It all happened in the blink of an eye.

"Move!"

Ignoring the blood gushing from my shoulder, I grabbed Isabella and Jasper, who were still frozen in shock, and pushed them behind me. Then, I led the way along the escape route I had scouted earlier.

My world narrowed to cold calculations and the mechanical rhythm of combat. Pain had long become routine.

I didn't catch my breath until I had led them into an abandoned factory that was completely safe. Only after confirming we had temporarily lost our pursuers did I lean against the wall and let myself relax a little.

The wound on my shoulder flared with pain after all the running.

As always, Isabella's first reaction was to show concern for Jasper. "Jasp! Are you okay? Are you hurt? Let me see!"

Her hands moved frantically over him, as if he had just fought for his life. She didn't look at me until she was sure he wasn't hurt, and then her gaze landed on my blood-soaked shoulder. Her face went pale, and her lips moved, as if she wanted to step forward.

Then, Jasper went limp and let out a sharp cry of pain. He clutched his side and slowly sank to the ground, his face twisted in agony.

"Jasp!" Isabella's attention snapped entirely to him. She grabbed him frantically, holding him close as her voice trembled with tears. "What's wrong? Are you hurt? Don't scare me!"

Jasper weakly raised his hand, pointing to his side.

Isabella quickly lifted his shirt, revealing a shallow but messy gash. He had gotten it by accidentally hitting a pile of scrap steel during the chaos.

"So much blood… What do we do?" She panicked completely, tears streaming down her face.

She suddenly looked up, her eyes locking on me. "Damien! Get him to the hospital. Now!"

I leaned against the wall, my eyes cold as I said, "Help will be here in five minutes."

"I'm telling you to carry him there!" she screamed. "If anything happens to him, I'll never forgive you!"

Seeing me stay put, she gritted her teeth and tried to lift Jasper herself. But in those ridiculous heels and with her pampered upbringing, there was no way she could carry a grown man nearly six feet tall.

She barely got him off the ground before her ankle gave out, and they both fell. Her face was pale from the effort, and sweat beaded her forehead. It was both pitiful and ridiculous.

I couldn't stand it any longer. It was not out of concern, just sheer irritation.

I strode over and hoisted Jasper onto my back. Then, catching Isabella off guard, I slid my uninjured left arm under her and lifted her off the ground, holding her firmly in a princess carry.

"You—!" She grabbed onto my neck, going rigid, too stunned to speak.

I didn't bother responding.

With Jasper on my back and Isabella in my arms, I headed toward the exit.

The office door creaked open, and Regina walked in, placing a steaming cup of coffee on my desk. She looked at Isabella, who seemed lost and unsteady, but didn't say a word. Isabella's body shook uncontrollably, her eyes burning with disbelief. She staggered to her feet and took one unsteady step after another toward me, her lips quivering. She was so overwhelmed with emotion that she couldn't force out a single word."Mission complete. Clear the area." I ignored her and spoke into my comms, giving the final order. "Copy that, Mr. Meyer." Regina's voice came from behind me. She stepped up to my side, and we stood shoulder to shoulder as her sharp gaze swept across the room. With calm, practiced precision, she directed the team to clean up the scene."Dami… Is that you? My Dami…" Isabella finally found her voice. Tears ran down her cheeks as she reached out with a trembling hand, trying to touch my face and make sure I was real.I stepped back, avoiding her touch. Her hand froze in mid-air. The excitement on her face collapsed in an instant, replaced by a wounded emptiness. Only then did she notice Regina standing beside me. Regina's presence was comm

Over the past two years, I had taken control of the Black Raven's underground network and cleaned up its shady past. I recruited elite special forces worldwide and turned Rockshield into an unstoppable weapon. When our mission wrapped up, Regina came to find me at our temporary camp. She was carrying two ice-cold beers."Damien," she said, handing me a bottle, her eyes shining with unmasked ambition. "Why fight each other until we're both ruined and let those greedy old men take the spoils? Let's work together instead."She tilted her head back and took a swig of beer. "Your strength lies in your top-tier combat skills and intel network. Mine is team management and business operations. Together, we could dominate the local security market."I watched her, a woman who had clawed her way up from the filthiest depths, just as I had. There was no romance in her eyes, only a hunger for her work and a pure respect for strength. I admired that kind of purity."Alright," I said, clinking

When Isabella finally reached the pier, all she found was a burning wreckage. The wail of firetruck sirens grew louder, and the air was thick with the acrid stench of smoke and charred debris."Damien... Dami!"Her voice ripped through the chaos, raw and desperate, as she tried to run straight into the flames. The firefighters who had just arrived held her back, keeping her from throwing herself into the fire."No… He can't be gone… He's the strongest bodyguard… He said he'd protect me for the rest of my life…" Collapsing in despair, she muttered under her breath. Her tears cascaded down her face.A moment later, Jasper limped up behind her and pulled her into his arms, murmuring gentle words of comfort, "Bella, you have to let go. You can't bring the dead back. Damien was so capable. He'll be watching over us from above—""Get off me!"Isabella went off like a lit fuse, pushing him away with a force that stunned him. Her eyes were full of raw disgust and icy contempt. "He's not

Isabella finally realized it. I had been reborn too.The coldness beneath my calm exterior suddenly clicked into place. The distance she had sensed for so long but could never explain now made perfect sense.A flicker of guilt and panic crossed her face. She couldn't meet my eyes, and her gaze instinctively darted away. She finally remembered everything she owed me.A sharp cry broke the tense silence between us.One of the kidnappers, growing impatient, struck Jasper's wrist with the flat of his knife. Jasper immediately went into full theatrics, letting out an exaggerated scream as blood began to seep from his wound."Jasp!" Isabella's heart tightened. All her reason, all the guilt that had just surfaced, vanished in an instant. She didn't even look at me as she shouted desperately at Hector, "I choose Jasp! Let him go! I'll do whatever you want!"Hearing her answer, so quick and decisive, I couldn't help but let out a soft laugh. "Isabella, thank you."I continued the rest o

The weight I carried tore the wound on my shoulder even more, and the blood flowed faster, but I didn't so much as flinch.Isabella, cradled in my arms, glanced down at the blood seeping through my shoulder. Her lips parted as if she wanted to say something, but in the end, she turned her head away."About what happened today… I'll make it up to you," she murmured, her voice low. It sounded like a promise, or maybe just something she was telling herself to feel better.Make it up to me? I could only give a bitter smile and think to myself, "Isabella… There's no future for us anymore."The next day was the Thornton family's critically important trade show. It was being held at a private pier in Southbay. The wound on my shoulder had been treated simply and bandaged with thick gauze. It was hidden beneath my crisp black suit. No one would have guessed a thing.Isabella was probably feeling guilty. She was unusually quiet the entire way. Her eyes would drift toward me now and then,
