Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
Sabrina lunged forward and seized Elena. "I stitched this dress with my own hands! Put it on, now. Don't push me."

Elena frowned and burst into loud sobs.

I stepped between them, taking the dress from Sabrina's grasp. "Don't frighten her, Sabrina. She's not used to colors like these. Don't blame her for that. She's just a child."

Sabrina's expression tightened into a scowl. "Picky, huh? Alex never makes a fuss over clothes. How dare she… Still, she has to wear this. The old priest blessed it. It'll keep her safe."

She bent down once more, her tone soft and coaxing. "This is a princess dress, Elena. Once you wear it, you'll be a little princess. Don't you want that?"

But Elena only clung to the hem of my clothes, pressing herself behind me. "No… I don't want to. I don't like the colors."

A wave of revulsion rose in my chest, but I forced it down and twisted my lips into a grateful smile. "Sabrina, it means a lot that you care for Elena this way. Why don't you leave the dress here? Once she has calmed down, I'll make sure she puts it on. I promise your kindness won't be wasted."

Sabrina was about to argue further when her phone rang.

"Get back here, quick! Alex's skin is torn again!"

I pretended not to hear Jerome's frantic voice and crouched beside Elena, gently wiping away her tears.

The instant Sabrina learned that Alex was in trouble, her eyes flicked from the dress in my hands to the earnestness on my face—a sincerity she couldn't doubt. Then, she rushed back home.

Once she was gone, I pulled out my phone and called my younger brother, Owen Reid. I invited him over to celebrate Elena's birthday.

The people Sabrina despised most were Owen and me. In her mind, all the Reids' wealth should go to Jerome alone. She never tired of asking why Mom and Dad hadn't been content with Jerome and why they had to burden themselves with a useless daughter and another son.

And yet, it was I who ended up the successful one. I married a man far better than her husband.

Meanwhile, Owen became nothing but a spoiled wastrel, squandering his life on alcohol, gambling, and women. In my past life, he knew everything Sabrina had done to me, yet he felt not a flicker of sympathy. Instead, he had just stood by her side, helping her claw at the Satchwells' inheritance.

Owen was rotten through and through. Even after he got the money, he squandered every last bit of it. His reckless indulgences finally caught up with him, leaving him with HIV.

In the end, everything played out just as Sabrina wished. The Reids were stripped down to Jerome alone. He, Sabrina, and Alex lived on comfortably, a tidy little family of three.

So, Sabrina wanted a healthy Alex? Fine. I'd hand her Mom's "precious boy" and watch if she could stomach him.

She thought she could trade her sickly son for my daughter? In that case, I'd let her get an Alex who was rotten to the core.

I was holding Elena and just about to cut the cake when the doorbell rang.

The moment Elena saw that it was Owen, her brows knitted together. In her eyes, Jerome, Sabrina, and Owen were nothing but vermin.

Owen always had a habit of laying his hands on Elena, and I hated having him anywhere near her. But now, I had no choice but to swallow my disgust and let him in.

The moment he stepped through the door, not even bothering to take off his shoes, he asked, "Herman's not home, huh?"

"Yeah. He's on a business trip."

At the mention of Herman's absence, Owen's face lit up. "Happy birthday, Elena! Now, hurry up and give me some pocket money."

Shameless was far too mild a word. What kind of man would ask a child for money?

"I invited you here to celebrate Elena's birthday. And you're asking her for money?"

Owen curled his lip. "You know I'm broke, Emma. I've got plans later, so just hand me some cash. Once I strike it rich, forget birthdays, I'll buy Elena her own island!"

I laughed. This was Owen—slick tongue and full of empty promises but always dressed up pretty.

Mom had always doted on him the most. Since we were kids, the best food and drink were laid at his feet first.

Had Jerome not had Alex and had Owen not been a freak, perhaps Owen would still be Mom's and Dad's favorite.

I had left the dress Sabrina sent, along with the new gold necklace I had bought, deliberately sitting out on the table. Sure enough, Owen's eyes landed on them right away. He strolled over to the table. "Emma, this gold heart pendant's got to be worth a fair bit, huh?"

He weighed it in his palm. "At least two ounces, easy."

"That's Herman's birthday gift for Elena. As for that dress, my friend brought it back from Serania. She told me that even secondhand, it could fetch around six grand. Elena had only worn it a few times before deciding she didn't like it."

"What's wrong, Sabrina? Don't you like the gift I gave you? Your son behaves more like Owen now. Lucky you. Owen's my mother's golden boy. Between Jerome, me, and him, it's Owen she holds closest to her heart."The moment those words left my mouth, Sabrina went feral, thrashing like she'd tear me apart if she could. But right now, she couldn't so much as lift a finger, let alone throw her whole body into it.I pulled the telescoping rod from my pocket, snapped it open, and shoved the blunt end against Sabrina's throat. "You and Alex are rotten to the core. How dare you go after Elena?""You bitch! Owen and Alex are both Reids. You'd harm your own brother and your nephew. May you suffer and die for what you've done!"I drove the rod harder. She gagged, a ragged sound erupting from her."The one who should be suffering and dying is you. You never even thanked me for getting you such a fine son. Look at how insolent you're being."Then, I called Herman in, "Babe, didn't you say the

At Owen's funeral, Mom's eyes were rimmed red as she turned to me. "Emma, tell me, am I paying for my sins?"I kept my expression impassive, though inside, I felt as cold as ice.In my last life, when Elena died, Mom had only murmured a few words about how sorry she felt for her. And in the end, she even joined the others to kill me.Once the funeral was over, Mom went home. But Owen's last words had taken root, gnawing at her. Now that Owen was gone, she clung desperately to Alex.Even if it was Sabrina who killed Owen, Mom would never cut Alex loose. He was her only grandson, after all.Sabrina kept denying that she was the one who had switched Owen's and Alex's fates. She swore up and down she'd never go after someone like Owen. How could she ever wish for Alex to have his fate?A part of Mom believed her, but she still had her doubts. Carrying the weight of Owen's loss, she simply went on with her life.Meanwhile, Alex was quietly slipping into something monstrous. He began

Herman and I were on our way home when he asked, "Are you upset?"I shook my head. "You know, in my last life, Elena was eaten away by the condition. I held her in my arms, and whenever I touched her, her skin would peel off with blood. She was too weak to even cry. "She just lay there like a kitten, whimpering until she stopped breathing. And you and I… We didn't have a good ending either. It was all the Reids' doing. Tell me, does our family have to carry this curse in every lifetime?"Herman tightened his grip on my hand. "All I want is for our family to be safe. Whatever you decide, I'll stand by you."Owen's condition worsened quickly. Just like Elena in my last life, his body broke out in festering sores.Mom spent everything she had, bringing in the country's best experts in immunology and dermatology, but none of them could uncover the cause. To make matters worse, Owen was diagnosed with syphilis and other diseases. The warts on his body kept multiplying. Then, one day,

The instant Sabrina caught Owen's voice, her mood curdled, and her brows pulled into a hard knot. "Great, the freeloader's back!"Mom, however, adored Owen and Alex more than anyone. She bustled over to the door, eager to let him in. But the moment she saw him, she went still.Owen stood there, wearing a mask. His eyes had puffed into narrow slits, and his forehead was flushed with a fierce red."What on earth happened to you? Did you eat something you're allergic to?"Owen collapsed against Mom, sobbing. "I don't know what's wrong. My skin started itching in the middle of the night, and the second I scratched, it split open. Mom, please, you have to take me to the hospital."Mom's heart nearly shattered. "How could this happen all of a sudden? Oh, my sweetie, what's happening to you?"Panicked, she fumbled with her phone and called me.I muted the security feed and answered."Emma, you need to come home right now. Owen's sick. We have to get him to the hospital."As if I'd ev

By the time I hurried back to the hospital, Elena's fever had finally broken. She was herself again, sitting in a chair in the children's ward while swinging her legs. She sipped on the yogurt drink Herman had brought. The moment she spotted me, she hopped down and threw out her arms, asking to be held. It wasn't until I pulled her close that the weight in my chest finally lifted.Herman and I decided to move up the immigration plans we had already made. We packed up, returned home, and contacted an agent to have our property in the country sold without delay. It was far too dangerous to let Elena stay in the country. Who knew what else Sabrina might try to pull on her? That evening, I pulled up the security feed from Mom and Dad's place. Just as we had expected, Alex was starting to recover.Sabrina held him close, pressing a few kisses to his cheek. "Mr. Hackett really is something. Alex's skin looks better with each passing day."Her mention of the mystic almost made me laugh
