Chapter 9

Time slipped by, and my belly slowly began to show. I was already well into the late stages of pregnancy.

During this period, Raffaele practically took care of me himself. He wouldn't let anyone else step in. Instead, he strolled with me in the garden every day and prepared little gifts for me.

"Chiara," he said softly, handing me a box. "This is for you."

Inside was a radiant pearl necklace. I glanced at it without saying anything.

"It's the largest pearl in all of Aron," he added, pinching the chain lightly with a trace of nervousness.

He then relaxed and slipped it into his pocket. "What else do you like? I'll find it at the next auction and have them send it over directly."

He carefully combed through my hair with his fingers, as if he were afraid of hurting me. Just as I was about to respond, my phone suddenly vibrated with a text message. It was Matteo.

"How are you doing, Chiara?"

I closed the chat without hesitation and tossed my phone aside.
