Chapter 6

Luca does not move away.

He stays close enough that I can feel the heat of him, close enough that the new mission burns across my vision like a second pulse.

[Make him lose control before the night ends.]

The words sit heavy in my head. Losing control is the last thing I ever saw this man do. In the first life he could watch me bleed on the floor and still keep his voice even. Now he is looking at me like he has already started calculating how far I am willing to go.

My throat feels tight. I force myself to speak before the silence becomes another kind of trap.

“Why did you let her leave like that?”

Luca’s eyes stay on mine. “Because you stopped her. And I wanted to see what you would do next.”

The honesty in it is worse than a lie. He is not protecting me. He is studying me. The same way he used to study problems that needed solving.

I shift back on the bed, trying to put a little space between us. His hand leaves my neck only to catch my wrist again, keeping me from going far.

“You’re still shaking,” he says.

“I’m fine.”

“You’re not.” His thumb presses over my pulse again, slow and deliberate. “Your heart is racing. Your breathing is too shallow. And you keep looking at me like you’re waiting for the moment I turn cruel.”

I hate how accurately he reads it. I hate that the system is rewarding every second of contact with another soft rush of heat that makes it harder to think clearly.

“Maybe I am,” I answer.

Something dark flickers in his expression. Not anger. Interest.

“Good,” he says. “Fear makes people honest. And I am very interested in the honest version of you.”

He uses the grip on my wrist to pull me forward until I am forced to rise onto my knees on the bed to keep my balance. The wedding dress shifts with the movement. His other hand settles at my waist, steady and possessive, holding me in place.

The system reacts at once.

[Escalation registered.]
[Reward issued: 400 points.]
[Host is within critical range.]
[Suggestion: Use proximity. Push further.]

I can feel the next punishment waiting under my skin if I refuse. The knowledge makes my stomach twist. I came back to take control, not to be dragged deeper into whatever this is becoming.

“Luca.” My voice comes out lower than I want. “What are you doing?”

“Testing a theory.” He leans in until his mouth is near my ear again. “The woman I married would never have grabbed another woman in front of me. She would never have spoken back. She would never have looked at me like she wanted to survive me instead of please me.”

His breath brushes my skin.

“So I am going to keep pushing until I find out which version of you is real.”

My free hand comes up between us, pressing against his chest. Not hard enough to shove him away. Hard enough to create a barrier. The system still counts it as contact and feeds me another wave of heat in response.

“And if I don’t want to be tested?” I ask.

Luca pulls back just enough to meet my eyes. The look on his face is calm, focused, and completely without mercy.

“Then you should not have touched me first.”

The words land like a quiet verdict.

He releases my wrist only to slide his hand up my arm and over my shoulder until his fingers rest against the side of my throat again. The hold is light. It still feels like a claim.

“You wanted to be seen tonight,” he says. “Now you are. The question is whether you can handle what happens when I stop treating you like something I can ignore.”

The system flashes a sharper warning.

[Target’s control is destabilizing.]
[Continue. Do not retreat.]
[Punishment threshold rising.]

My pulse beats hard against his fingers. Fear and the system’s heat twist together until I can barely separate them. I know what the mission wants. I know what the old version of me would do. I know that if I give in completely I might lose the only advantage I came back with.

Luca’s voice drops even lower.

“Choose, Elena.”

His thumb strokes once over my throat.

“Push me. Or go back to being quiet. But do it now.”

The room feels too small. The mission timer feels too close. And for the first time since I woke up in this bed I understand that the real danger is not only the system or the woman who already left the room.

It is the fact that part of me wants to find out what happens if I push.

If I do not, I am eating poison in front of the whole family. There is a third option, and I take it before I can talk myself out of it.I put the spoon down."It looks lovely," I say. "But I couldn't possibly take the first bite."Giulia's head tilts. "It is tradition.""Then let me honor it properly." I slide the bowl across the linen toward her, slow, until it stops in front of her pearls. "You've been in this family longest, Zia Giulia. A bride should be blessed by the eldest woman at the table. Please. Eat first."The room goes very quiet.Dante's coffee cup comes down on its saucer with a small click. Marco's smile, which had frozen, thaws into something nervous. Rosalind l

Chapter 11"He said I should sleep," I answer.Luca's eyes stay on mine. He is standing in the doorway in his shirtsleeves, the cuffs undone, hair a little rumpled from a couch he clearly never lay down on.[Truthfulness of Host's statement: 85%.]Fifteen percent. Salvatore did say that. It is the rest I am leaving out."And?" Luca asks."And that he was sorry to meet me at this hour." I make my voice small and tired, which is not hard. "He said it was a long time since he had seen anyone new in this house."Luca watches me for a while. Then his shoulders drop a fraction, as if he has decided to let this one go. It is not trust. It is a man picking which fight to have before sunrise."He should not be out of the vault," he says. "I will speak to the guards.""Don't."His brow lifts."If you shout at the guards, they'll know he walks." I keep my voice level. "They'll know he can. You said nobody knows he's breathing. How many people know he walks?"The silence that follows is the kind

Chapter 10I do not open the door right away.Every muscle in my body wants to run to the balcony, but the balcony is the second floor, and I have already died once tonight without finding out what a fall feels like."Who is it?" I ask. My voice is steadier than my knees.A dry chuckle comes through the wood. "You know who. You have been reading my name in your own head for the last ten minutes."[Skill 'Read Lies (Lv. 1)': No lie detected.][Warning: Second System signature approaching. Distance: 0 meters.]Zero meters. Just the thickness of a door.Luca said the old man could barely walk. Two strokes, a third that would kill him. I think about calling out for Luca, who is on a couch somewhere down the hall. Then I think about the way the voice said come back from the dead, and I understand something cold: if I shout, whatever happens next happens in front of Luca. And I do not know yet whether Luca should hear it.I open the door.Salvatore Vescari is not what I pictured. He is smal

Chapter 9I could lie. The skill would catch it, and Luca would catch me catching it.So I do the one thing I have never done in front of this man. I tell him a piece of the truth and let it stand on its own."I had a nightmare," I say. "I told you that already.""You told me a version of it.""Then here's the rest." My hands are cold, so I fold them in front of me. "In the nightmare, I left this house. You were waiting at the bottom of the stairs. You didn't shout. You didn't even look angry. You just let it happen."The ache in my spine stops climbing.[Truthfulness of Host's statement: 100%.][Punishment suspended.]Luca does not move. The balcony door is still open behind him, and the night air moves the curtain against his shoulder."Let what happen?""The end of me."I watch the words land. I have spent three years studying this man's face, and I know the small tells. A muscle near his jaw. A slow blink, like he is putting something away to look at later. Right now both of them

Chapter 8I do not stay in the bed.The system hums at the edge of my mind like a held breath, and I ignore it. I slide off the mattress, lift the skirt of the wedding dress so it does not drag, and cross the room in bare feet. The door to the hallway is thick, but old houses always have gaps.
