ログインChapter 7
I do not push him. I press my palm flat against his chest and hold it there until he feels the pressure. "Not like this," I say. Luca's fingers stay at my throat. "Explain." "You want to find out which version of me is real. Fine. But you don't get to decide how it happens." My voice shakes at the edges, but the words come out. "You said fear makes people honest. Then you shouldn't be surprised when I'm honest about this. I won't be tested like a lock you're trying to pick." The system screams across my vision. [Host is refusing the mission.] [Punishment imminent.] [Warning: Retreat will cost points.] The ache in my spine spikes. I breathe through it and keep my eyes on his. Luca does not move for a long moment. Then his hand drops from my neck. Not because I pushed it away. Because he chose to. That bothers me more than if he had held on. "You are telling me no," he says. He says it slowly, like the word is in a language he has never needed to learn. "I'm telling you not yet." The pain hits. It is not a sting this time. It is a bright line down my back that makes my vision go white at the edges. I grip his shirt with one hand to stay upright and hate myself for it. Luca catches me by the elbow. "Elena." "I'm fine." "Stop saying that." His voice is flat, but his grip is careful in a way it was not a minute ago. "You went pale. What is that?" I almost tell him. The words are right there. A system. A second life. A bullet. If I say them, he will either call me insane or believe me, and I do not know which is worse. [Host's pain level critical. Suggestion: Offer a compromise.] A compromise. The system has opinions now. I look at the man who watched me die and make a decision that feels like walking onto ice. "Sit down," I say. "Stay on the bed. Talk to me. Ask me anything you want, and I'll answer one question honestly. Just one. In exchange, you give me the night without touching me." His eyebrow rises. "You are negotiating with me." "Yes." "On your wedding night." "You've made it clear it's a contract." I lift my chin. "So let's treat it like one." Something moves across his face. Surprise, I think. It is gone before I can name it. Then, to my shock, he sits. Not close. On the far end of the mattress, one arm resting on his knee, like a man waiting for a business meeting to begin. [Reward issued: 600 points.] [Pain suppressed.] [Condition met: Target engagement through dialogue.] The ache fades like someone has turned a tap off. I let out a breath I did not know I was holding. "One question," Luca says. "Make it count." I watch him. He is waiting with that stillness that always made me feel like prey. But I have the advantage now. I know how this man thinks. I know what he will say before he says it. "Ask," I tell him. He studies me for a long time. "Who are you working for?" I almost laugh. Of course. In his world, a wife who changes overnight is a spy. "No one," I say. "That's the honest answer. I'm not working for your enemies, your rivals, or the Moretti family. I woke up and decided I was done being afraid of you." "And yet you are afraid." "Yes. And I'm here anyway." He is quiet. The silence stretches, but this time it does not feel like a trap. It feels like a man recalculating. "Your turn," he says at last. "You said one question. That was yours. I answered nothing." "Then I'll ask mine." I fold my hands in my lap so he cannot see them shake. "Why did you marry me?" For the first time since he walked in, Luca looks away. His jaw moves once. "Because your father owed a debt," he says. "And because the old Don wanted a wife who would not cause problems." The words should hurt. They hurt less than they used to. What I notice instead is the pause before them. The half-second where he chose not to say something else. "That's not all of it," I say. His eyes snap back to mine. "One question," he says softly. "You asked it. I answered." "You answered part of it." "Then you will have to earn the rest." The system flares. [New hidden objective discovered: Uncover the real reason for the contract.] [Reward: Unknown.] [Warning: Target has secrets. Danger level: Extreme.] My heart kicks. Luca sees it, of course he does, but he only stands and straightens his jacket like the conversation was a negotiation he has decided to adjourn. "Sleep," he says. "I will take the couch." "You're leaving?" "You asked me not to touch you." He pauses at the door. "I keep my agreements, Elena. Even the ones I did not expect to make." He goes. The door closes softly. I sit alone in the white dress, in the big silent bed, and for the first time I realize I have not lost the night. I have kept it. [Mission 'Seduce Luca before sunrise': Partially completed.] [Remaining time: 6 hours 12 minutes.] [Bonus unlocked: Skill 'Read Lies (Lv. 1)'.] A thin, cold smile finds its way onto my face. Then, through the wall, I hear Sophia's heels in the hallway. They stop outside the master suite. A soft knock. And Luca's low voice answering. He did not go to the couch.Chapter 12The spoon is cold in my fingers.Eight faces watch me. Giulia's smile has not changed, and her eyes still have not closed. I can feel the system waiting at the edge of my mind with its price tag.[Antidote available: 3,000 points.][Current balance: 3,150.]If I buy it, I am down to almost nothing. If I do not, I am eating poison in front of the whole family. There is a third option, and I take it before I can talk myself out of it.I put the spoon down."It looks lovely," I say. "But I couldn't possibly take the first bite."Giulia's head tilts. "It is tradition.""Then let me honor it properly." I slide the bowl across the linen toward her, slow, until it stops in front of her pearls. "You've been in this family longest, Zia Giulia. A bride should be blessed by the eldest woman at the table. Please. Eat first."The room goes very quiet.Dante's coffee cup comes down on its saucer with a small click. Marco's smile, which had frozen, thaws into something nervous. Rosalind l
Chapter 11"He said I should sleep," I answer.Luca's eyes stay on mine. He is standing in the doorway in his shirtsleeves, the cuffs undone, hair a little rumpled from a couch he clearly never lay down on.[Truthfulness of Host's statement: 85%.]Fifteen percent. Salvatore did say that. It is the rest I am leaving out."And?" Luca asks."And that he was sorry to meet me at this hour." I make my voice small and tired, which is not hard. "He said it was a long time since he had seen anyone new in this house."Luca watches me for a while. Then his shoulders drop a fraction, as if he has decided to let this one go. It is not trust. It is a man picking which fight to have before sunrise."He should not be out of the vault," he says. "I will speak to the guards.""Don't."His brow lifts."If you shout at the guards, they'll know he walks." I keep my voice level. "They'll know he can. You said nobody knows he's breathing. How many people know he walks?"The silence that follows is the kind
Chapter 10I do not open the door right away.Every muscle in my body wants to run to the balcony, but the balcony is the second floor, and I have already died once tonight without finding out what a fall feels like."Who is it?" I ask. My voice is steadier than my knees.A dry chuckle comes through the wood. "You know who. You have been reading my name in your own head for the last ten minutes."[Skill 'Read Lies (Lv. 1)': No lie detected.][Warning: Second System signature approaching. Distance: 0 meters.]Zero meters. Just the thickness of a door.Luca said the old man could barely walk. Two strokes, a third that would kill him. I think about calling out for Luca, who is on a couch somewhere down the hall. Then I think about the way the voice said come back from the dead, and I understand something cold: if I shout, whatever happens next happens in front of Luca. And I do not know yet whether Luca should hear it.I open the door.Salvatore Vescari is not what I pictured. He is smal
Chapter 9I could lie. The skill would catch it, and Luca would catch me catching it.So I do the one thing I have never done in front of this man. I tell him a piece of the truth and let it stand on its own."I had a nightmare," I say. "I told you that already.""You told me a version of it.""Then here's the rest." My hands are cold, so I fold them in front of me. "In the nightmare, I left this house. You were waiting at the bottom of the stairs. You didn't shout. You didn't even look angry. You just let it happen."The ache in my spine stops climbing.[Truthfulness of Host's statement: 100%.][Punishment suspended.]Luca does not move. The balcony door is still open behind him, and the night air moves the curtain against his shoulder."Let what happen?""The end of me."I watch the words land. I have spent three years studying this man's face, and I know the small tells. A muscle near his jaw. A slow blink, like he is putting something away to look at later. Right now both of them
Chapter 8I do not stay in the bed.The system hums at the edge of my mind like a held breath, and I ignore it. I slide off the mattress, lift the skirt of the wedding dress so it does not drag, and cross the room in bare feet. The door to the hallway is thick, but old houses always have gaps. I learned that in three years of listening to this place from the guest room.I press my ear to the wood."You said you would be on the couch." Sophia's voice. Low now, no performance in it. "The couch is in the other direction.""I said I would sleep. I did not say where."Luca sounds tired. I have never heard him sound tired."You told me this marriage meant nothing," Sophia says. "You told me to wait until the paperwork settled and then she would be moved out of sight. That was the arrangement.""It still is."A new line of text slides across my vision.[Skill 'Read Lies (Lv. 1)' active.][Target statement: "It still is." Truthfulness: 38%.]My fingers tighten on the doorframe. Thirty-eight p
