The File That Shouldn’t Exist

My hands went cold around the file.

The photograph showed the same crushed windshield, twisted door, and black current that had filled my final moments.

It was not a similar accident.

It was mine.

The date printed beneath the image was November 18, three years from now—the night I had died in my first life.

I turned the page.

ELARA MERCER VOSS—VEHICLE RECOVERY REPORT.

Voss.

Not Vale.

According to the impossible report, I would die as Caelan’s wife.

A red line had been drawn across the official cause of death: accidental drowning.

Beside it, someone had written:

BRAKE FAILURE CONFIRMED. DRIVER’S RESTRAINT SABOTAGED.

Footsteps sounded outside the study.

I closed the file but did not return it to the drawer.

Caelan entered.

He stopped when he saw what I held.

Neither of us spoke.

Then he closed the door behind him.

“You violated the contract,” he said.

“This isn’t the west wing.”

“The file was locked.”

“The drawer was open.”

His gaze shifted toward the desk. “Someone searched this room.”

“That’s your concern?”

“My concern is that whoever opened the drawer may still be inside the house.”

He crossed to the wall and pressed a concealed security button.

I moved away from him.

“Explain the file.”

“Give it to me.”

“No.”

“Elara.”

“How do you possess a report about an accident that hasn’t happened?”

Security officers appeared outside. Caelan ordered them to lock down the estate and review every camera feed.

I waited until we were alone again.

“You knew about the bridge.”

His expression remained controlled, but the silence confirmed more than any denial.

“The date is impossible,” I continued. “The car in this photograph is mine, but I haven’t purchased it yet.”

He stepped closer.

“Where did you see that car?”

The question struck me like a physical blow.

He had not asked whether I recognised it.

He had asked where.

“You know I’ve seen it.”

“Answer me.”

“You first.”

We stood on opposite sides of the desk, two people guarding truths neither could safely reveal.

In my first life, I had considered Caelan a possible participant in my murder. Yet the notes in the file accused someone of sabotaging the vehicle. Why would a murderer investigate his own crime?

Unless the file was designed to mislead me.

“You were on the bridge that night,” I said.

His face changed.

Only slightly, but I saw it.

“What night?”

“The night in that photograph.”

“That date has not occurred.”

“Stop speaking to me as though I’m confused.”

He reached for the file. I stepped back.

“Did you kill me?”

Pain flashed across his face before anger buried it.

“No.”

The answer came without hesitation.

“Were you trying to save me?”

He looked toward the dark windows.

“That file is part of an investigation.”

“Into the future?”

“Into a threat against you.”

“How did you obtain a future police report?”

“I cannot tell you.”

“Then our contract ends now. Concealing information that threatens my life violates my condition.”

“You won’t survive without my protection.”

The certainty in his voice frightened me more than the file.

“Is that a threat?”

“It’s a fact.”

I placed the report on the desk.

“I survived Lucien once.”

“No, Elara. You didn’t.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Caelan realised what he had said.

I stopped breathing.

He knew.

Before I could force the truth from him, the lights went out.

Glass shattered behind me.

Caelan moved with terrifying speed. He pulled me down as a bullet struck the bookshelf where my head had been.

Security alarms screamed through the estate.

Caelan covered my body with his while another shot cracked through the window.

“Stay down.”

He drew a weapon from beneath the desk and fired toward the garden.

The shooting stopped.

Within seconds, guards flooded the room.

Caelan rose and pulled me behind the stone wall beside the fireplace. Blood darkened his upper arm.

“You’ve been shot.”

“It passed through.”

The security chief reported that the shooter had escaped beyond the eastern wall. The cameras covering that section had been disabled six minutes earlier.

Someone had entered Caelan’s protected estate, opened his drawer, and left it where I would find the file.

The photograph had not been exposed by accident.

It had been bait.

A guard handed Caelan a black envelope discovered beneath the broken window.

My name was written on it.

I opened it despite Caelan’s warning.

Inside was a photograph of Lucien and me taken during our engagement party. His face had been crossed out in red.

On the back were six words:

ASK THE MAN YOU USED TO LOVE.

The ballroom remained half-lit when I placed my hand in Caelan’s.Guests stood near the exits, uncertain whether the emergency was over. Reporters kept their cameras raised. The orchestra continued playing the song from the wedding I had abandoned.Lucien and I had chosen it together—or so I once believed. Selene later confessed that she suggested it to him because it had been Evelyn’s favourite.Crowne had been writing messages into our lives long before we knew how to read them.Caelan led me to the centre of the floor.“You don’t have to do this,” he said.“I’m tired of them turning every memory into a weapon.”His hand settled against my back.“Then make a new one.”We began to dance.Caelan moved with controlled precision, but he held me gently. Around us, the ballroom quieted. Even the false financial records vanished from the screens, replaced by the silver crown symbol.Someone was watching.I refused to look toward the cameras.“You knew this song,” I said.“My mother played

  • Reborn as the Ruthless Heir’s Contract Wife   The Mercer Gala

The Mercer Gala had always been Father’s favourite event. Each year, the foundation funded hospitals, technical scholarships, and housing programmes. In my first life, the final gala he attended became a public display of his weakness. This time, he entered the ballroom standing straight.Doctors had cleared him to attend for two hours. Mara’s team tested everything he touched, from his water glass to the microphone.Caelan remained beside me.“You’ve checked the exits six times,” I said.“Seven.”“You promised not to turn this into a prison.”“I’m counting doors, not locking them.”He wore a black tuxedo that made him appear even more severe. Guests watched us as we moved through the ballroom, their curiosity sharpened by the scandals surrounding our marriage. The contract required us to appear affectionate. The problem was that I no longer knew which gestures were performances.Caelan’s hand rested against my waist. When someone approached too quickly, his fingers tightened. When I

Caelan and I built the security plan together.I would not travel alone, but I could choose the members of my protection team. My location would be shared with one trusted officer, not monitored by everyone in the estate. I would continue working at Mercer Holdings, attending public events, and visiting Father. In return, I agreed to carry an emergency transmitter and inform Caelan before changing plans.“You mean ask permission,” I said.“I mean inform me.”“What happens if I forget?”“I find you.”“That sounds like a threat.”“It’s a promise.”We sat across from each other at his study table, rewriting arrangements that had never appeared in our marriage contract. The process revealed how different we were.Caelan believed every unknown person was a potential threat. I believed excessive control transformed protection into another kind of danger. We compromised because neither of us could defeat Crowne alone.I selected Mara Quinn as the head of my personal security. She had served

  • Reborn as the Ruthless Heir’s Contract Wife   The Man Who Asked for Nothing

Caelan did not speak during the drive home.Evelyn’s letter remained inside his coat, but its surviving sentence seemed to fill the car.Protect her—but do not imprison her as I was imprisoned.I wondered who had imprisoned Evelyn.Octavian was the obvious answer, but her warning had already taught us not to mistake the most visible enemy for the true one.At the estate, Caelan dismissed the medical team after they treated his arm. I followed him into his study.“You need to rest.”“So do you.”“My burn is minor.”“And my wound is inconvenient.”Blood had already stained the fresh bandage beneath his sleeve.“You nearly fell through a burning floor.”“I remember.”“You told me to release you.”“You’ve mentioned that.”“Because you would rather die than become someone else’s burden.”His expression hardened.“Do not analyse me.”“Then stop making yourself so easy to analyse.”That almost made him smile.I reached for the buttons of his shirt. He caught my wrist.“What are you doing?”“

  • Reborn as the Ruthless Heir’s Contract Wife   Betrayed Twice by the Same Memory

Evelyn’s warning replayed through the investigation room.“Lucien must never marry Elara. Selene was placed inside the family to make certain he does.”Then came the final sentence.“Do not trust Octavian—but understand this: he is not Crowne.”The recording ended, leaving only the low hum of the equipment.Caelan stood beside the speaker, motionless. His expression remained controlled, but his fingers had curled into a fist.“That was your mother’s voice?” I asked.“Yes.”“You’re certain?”“I would know it anywhere.”Lucien had left Mercer Holdings before the recording was recovered. Father remained upstairs with the board, approving the final termination of every Vale contract. For the moment, Caelan and I were alone.“How could Evelyn know Crowne planned to use Selene?” I asked. “She died when Selene was still a child.”“She knew Amelia.”“Selene’s mother.”“Possibly.”Caelan took the drive from the technician’s console and turned it over in his hand.“My mother never spoke to me a

The Lake Arden records documented three years of betrayal.Hotel reservations.Private dinners.Jewellery purchases.Messages hidden inside business accounts.Lucien had courted me publicly while maintaining Selene privately. She gave him information about my family. He gave her money, influence, and promises he never intended to keep.Together, they created the man I thought I loved.I took the evidence to Father. He sat behind his desk at Mercer Holdings, still pale from the poisoning but strong enough to read every page. When he finished, he removed his glasses.“I brought Selene into our home.”“This is not your fault.”“I trusted her with you.”“So did I.”He looked older than he had that morning.“Did Lucien ever love you?”I considered the question.“He loved the way I saw him. He wanted to remain that man without becoming him.”Father reached across the desk and held my hand.“I am sorry I encouraged the marriage.”“You did what you believed would protect me.”“And Caelan?”Th
