Tristan’s POV

The deal closed at 6:47 on a Saturday morning. I know the exact time because my assistant sent the confirmation while I was still in the car heading to the office and I read it once then put my phone face down on the seat.

Four billion dollars for Veltane Pharmaceuticals. We have had eighteen months of quiet maneuvering, three failed attempts by competitors to block the acquisition and one very expensive legal team that earned every cent this week.

By Monday morning every financial publication in America would be running the same headline and Rothschild Pharma would be the single most valuable private pharmaceutical company in the country.

This was the plan all along and plans either worked or they didn’t but this one did. There will be another one by Tuesday too. I looked out the window at the still quiet Manhattan streets in the early morning and felt nothing particular about it.

I have been winning for the past several years, it has lost all its allure.

Reid, my assistant was waiting when I stepped off the elevator. He fell into step beside me without greeting because he knew better on Saturday mornings.

“Veltane confirmation is filed.” He said matching my pace. “Legal is preparing the press release for Monday. Rothschild stock projections are —”

“Send it to my email.”

“Done.” He gave a small pause then continued “The Mortaine situation has developed.”

“Vance Mortaine met with three board members yesterday evening at a private dinner. Our source says he’s moving faster than projected. He’s planning a vote within two weeks.”

I pushed open my office door and went straight to the window. The city was waking up slowly below me and from up here it looked manageable.

“And the Hargrove gala?” I asked without turning around.

Reid paused. “Sir?”

“Who else noticed her at the gala?” There was A longer pause this time.

“Two people flagged an unregistered guest at the entrance. It didn’t go any further.”

Five years of complete silence and Morana Mortaine chose a pharmaceutical fundraiser crawling with Xavier Lancaster’s business contacts as her reentry point. No announcement or security or her cousin running interference beside her.

She just walked in alone wearing something that probably cost more than the gala’s entire catering budget and gave her real name at the door. It was reckless or intentional and with a Mortaine it was usually both.

I turned from the window and sat down. The Mortaine file was already on my desk where I’d left it Friday evening.

I opened it to the research division page. Her name appeared fourteen times in the first section alone with patents and awards.

That tracked with everything I’d built in my file on her. PhD at twenty two, industry awards before she was twenty five. She ran Mortaine’s research division so quietly that competitors didn’t realize she was the one dismantling them until the deals were already closed.

Then she had walked into Xavier Lancaster’s orbit and disappeared so completely that her own industry forgot she existed. I had not forgotten. The same way I had not forgotten that Beth Rothschild was eighteen years old when Xavier Lancaster decided she was useful and twenty when she stopped returning my calls entirely.

I thought about the look in her eyes when I told her Xavier was missing one thing. The way everything in her expression had gone sharp at exactly the same moment. I can see the businesswoman inside of her now. Not the wife.

She wasn’t here to survive Xavier Lancaster, she wanted to end him. That intent wasn’t learned but inherited. I’d seen it once before in my life in Ivo Mortaine.

She already knows I’m the only person in this city who wants Xavier Lancaster destroyed more than she does. And Morana Mortaine doesn’t waste time. I have my reasons, she has hers.

“Clear my afternoon.” I said.

Reid looked up from his tablet barely masking his shock. In three years he had never heard me clear an afternoon on a weekend.

“All of it?”

“All of it.”

He nodded and left without asking why.

I leaned back and looked at the ceiling for a moment. The Veltane deal had just made me the most powerful pharmaceutical voice in America.

I had the evidence to dismantle Xavier Lancaster’s entire operation. I had eight months of documentation, three whistleblowers and a legal team that hadn’t lost in four years. What I didn’t have was her.

Without Morana’s testimony, everything I had built against Xavier was circumstantial. Good enough to damage him but not finish him.

Xavier Lancaster’s latest trial results had been submitted to three international health boards under a falsified research identity. The compound he’d been using had a name in those filings. Greene’s Formula.

My expression didn’t change but something cold moved through my chest. He had the nerve to use her name as if she knew she was being used like this.

My phone buzzed on the desk and it was an unknown number. I looked at it for a second then picked it up knowing who it was. No new person has my personal number but I gave it to her yesterday

“You said three weeks.” Her voice was unhurried as though she hadn’t spent the night calculating whether to make this call. “I don’t have three weeks.”

I kept quiet though my hold on my phone had tightened.

“Xavier has scheduled another extraction for Tuesday. I need to move faster than your timeline.”

I leaned forward slowly. “Then come to my office. Now.”

Another silence but it was shorter this time as she calculated.

“Send me the address.”

The line went dead. I set the phone down and looked at the Manhattan skyline for a long moment.

Four billion dollars by 6:47 in the morning and somehow this felt like a more significant development. I picked up my phone and typed the address.

Then I waited.

Morana’s POVWe stayed at the farm for another week after the anniversary, longer than we’d originally planned and somewhere in the quiet mornings. The ridiculous chicken chaos and the slow unhurried evenings, I found myself thinking about what came next in a way that had nothing to do with strategy.“I want to do something,” I said one morning, sitting on the porch steps with coffee going cold in my hands.Tristan looked up from where he was attempting, with limited success, to repair a section of fence Gerald had apparently decided needed reorganizing.“What kind of something?”“We got married in fifteen minutes at City Hall. With witnesses who were basically strangers, for reasons that had nothing to do with choosing each other and everything to do with survival.” I grunned at him. “I want to do it again. Properly. Not legally, we don’t need that part twice. Just for us.”He set down the fence post he’d been holding and came to sit beside me on the steps.“A ceremony,” he said.“Sm

  • Reborn as the True Billionaire    127

Tristan’s POVThe gala has been exactly one year ago tonight. I hadn’t planned anything extravagant. No garden with fairy lights, no private jet, none of the grand gestures I’d apparently developed a habit of over the past months. Just the farmhouse, quiet, the fireplace lit against the early autumn cold and a bottle of wine I’d chosen myself instead of asking Reid to source something impressive.Morana was upstairs changing out of her farm clothes and I stood in the kitchen doing something I hadn’t done in longer than I could accurately remember. Nothing. Just standing there waitin and letting the quiet exist without filling it with a phone call or a report or the next necessary task.A year ago tonight I’d watched her walk into that ballroom in a dress she hadn’t worn in five years and something in me had recognized her before she’d even reached the entrance, some part of my mind that had been cataloging her for six years finally understanding that the distance I’d maintained was ab

Morana’s POVHe cancelled Friday at 4 PM, forty minutes before we were supposed to leave for the farm, standing in the doorway of his office with his phone still in his hand and an expression I recognized immediately because I’d spent five years learning to read exactly this look on someone else’s face.“Reid needs me for a call,” he said. “European investors, something about the Milan acquisition timeline. I have to take it.”“Now?”“It’s urgent.”“Everything’s urgent to someone,” I said and I heard the edge in my own voice before I’d fully decided to let it show. “That’s what makes it urgent. You taught me that.”“This is different.”“How?”“It’s a genuine timing issue, not something Reid could have anticipated. The investors are in a different time zone, this is the only window that works for everyone.”I felt something cold settle in my chest, familiar in a way that had nothing to do with Tristan specifically and everything to do with five years of learning that plans meant nothin

Morana’s POVDr. Storms ran the Friday board meeting without me for the first time in months. I found out how it went from a text summary Felix sent afterward instead of sitting through it myself and something about that felt like an actual milestone worth acknowledging. She handled the Hendricks acquisition question better than you would have. Don’t tell her I said that. Felix texted.I heard that, came Yemi’s response in the same thread, apparently added by Felix without my knowledge. And thank you, I think.I set the phone down and looked at Tristan across the kitchen island, where he was reading something on his own phone with an expression that suggested Reid had sent something equally reassuring.“Rothschild’s quarterly numbers came in,” he said. “Reid presented them himself. Investors didn’t ask a single question about my absence.”“Should we be offended by that?”“Deeply offended,” he said, not looking up. “Apparently we’re replaceable.”“Apparently we built something that do

Morana’s POVHe knocked, which was ridiculous because it was his own penthouse. I was standing in the living room when I heard it and for a full three seconds I genuinely didn’t understand what was happening until I looked through the peephole and found Tristan Rothschild standing in the hallway outside his own front door holding a single flower like he wasn’t entirely sure what to do with it.I opened the door and just looked at him.“You knocked” I stated the obvious. “It’s a first date,” he said, entirely serious as though this explained everything. “I thought the door should be part of it.”“You live here.”“I’m aware.”I looked at the flower. It was not a bouquet. Not the dozen roses I half expected given his general approach to grand gestures. Just one flower, something pale and slightly crumpled at the edges like it had survived a journey it wasn’t fully prepared for.“Is that a carnation?” I tried to hide my smile. “It’s whatever was closest to the register.”“You panicked

Morana’s POVDr. Patricia Hale’s office was smaller than I expected, warm in a deliberate way that felt designed to counteract exactly the kind of controlled composure both Tristan and I brought into every room we occupied professionally. Two chairs angled toward each other instead of a couch, which felt oddly more intimate than I’d anticipated.I sat with my hands folded in my lap, aware of exactly how corporate my posture looked and glanced at Tristan beside me, who’d adopted the same careful stillness he brought to board meetings, jaw set, expression unreadable.“Neither of you needs to perform anything here,” Dr. Hale said, watching us both with the particular patience of someone who’d clearly seen this exact tension in every powerful couple who’d ever walked through her door. “This isn’t a negotiation. There’s no outcome you need to secure.”“Old habits,” I said.“Understandably.” She had a legal pad in her lap, though she wasn’t writing yet, just watching us both with an attenti

Morana’s POV Xavier mentioned the gala the same way he mentioned everything he didn’t want me involved in which was right before leaving the room. It seems like he wanted to take his LEGAL wife to go there. “It’s a pharmaceutical fundraiser and too formal. You’d be bored.” He adjusted his cuffl

Morana’s POV“This is my husband, Tristan Rothschild” I said and watched the color literally drain from their faces.Tristan didn’t stand up. Tristan’s POVI was waiting outside City Hall when the Rolls-Royce pulled up. I didn’t recognize the car at first. I just knew it was the kind of vehicle that made people stop and stare because it screamed money in a way that was impossible to ignore. The engine shut off and I watched the door ope

  • Reborn as the True Billionaire    14

Tristan’s POVReid was waiting when I got to the office. He didn’t have the usual morning briefing energy. He had the energy of someone who’d been awake for thirty-six hours straight staring at data that didn’t add up in a way anyone wanted it to.“Xavier met with Vance Mortaine yesterday,” he said
