Chapter 4

Author: Goodtale
I caught Mom by the arm and pulled her back. "Mom, run…"

However, Keith and Bradley rushed at us. Keith grabbed Mom by the wrist and wrapped an arm around her waist, dragging her toward the gray van waiting at the mouth of the alley.

I lunged at him and bit his arm. "Let go of my mom!"

But it didn't do much. I was only seven.

Bradley grabbed me from behind and lifted me off the ground. He shoved me into the back seat, and Keith pushed Mom in from the other side. Then Bradley snatched Mom's phone and locked the doors before the van pulled away, heading for City Hall.

"Are you crazy?" Mom's voice trembled. "You're kidnapping us!"

"Kidnapping?" Keith sneered. "You're my fiancee. I'm taking you to City Hall so we can get married. If you call the cops, they'll say it's just a fight between a couple."

"Let us go!" Mom reached over and grabbed a fistful of Keith's hair, who was in the seat in front of her.

Bradley pulled a knife from under the seat. He held it with the tip pointing down and pressed it against my knee.

"Move again, and I'll stab her."

Mom froze.

Keith watched us through the rearview mirror, the corners of his mouth slowly curling upward.

Meanwhile, I sat trembling in my seat. The pain and terror from my last life came rushing back to me.

Was it really impossible to save Mom, even after getting a second chance?

Soon, we arrived at City Hall. Keith parked right outside the main entrance and got out of the van.

Mom glanced at me, the knife still pressed against my knee, then went out, and I followed her.

Bradley slipped the knife into his sleeve. He walked beside me with one hand resting on my shoulder, the tip of the blade pressed tightly against me through the fabric.

There were only a few people in the lobby.

Keith put his polite face back on, checked us in, and we were called to the counter a few minutes later.

"I'll need your government-issued photo IDs and the required marriage-license documents."

Keith handed over the documents and nudged Mom with his elbow. Mom reached into the inside pocket of her coat and pulled out her documents, her hands shaking.

The clerk took them and glanced at Mom. "Do you confirm that you're here voluntarily?"

"Y-Yes…" Mom replied.

The clerk started entering the required information into the marriage-license application. A smug smile spread across Keith's face, while I felt all the blood rush to my head.

I couldn't let this go on!

"Miss, I need to use the restroom!"

The clerk stopped typing.

Bradley's fingers tightened around my shoulder, digging into the bone. "Hold it in."

"I can't! If you don't take me to the restroom right now, I'll pee right here!" I reached down and started to pull down my pants.

Everyone waiting nearby turned to look at me.

"Hey, hey, kid. Wait a second!" The clerk stood up and came around the counter. She took my hand and led me toward the restroom.

Bradley tried to follow us, but the clerk turned around and said, "You have to wait outside. Men aren't allowed in the women's restroom."

Bradley stopped and glared at me.

The clerk stopped in front of the toilet. "Go on in. Your dad is waiting outside."

As soon as I entered the restroom, I went straight to a stall that showed it was occupied and knocked on the door.

"Miss, can I borrow your phone? I can't find my mom. Please. I need your help." I started to sniffle.

A hand holding a phone reached out.

My fingers were shaking so badly that I could barely hit the right numbers.

"Grandma, come to City Hall right now! Someone has a knife on Mom and is forcing her to get married. Call the police, quick!"

Bradley shouted from outside. "Are you done yet?"

I quickly hung up and handed the phone back to the lady in the stall. When I returned to the lobby, the clerk was confirming the information with Keith.

He had an arm around Mom's shoulders, and to anyone looking on, they could have passed for a couple deeply in love. He glanced at me, a grin spreading on his face.

I'd seen that look before. In my last life, he'd look at me like that every time he finished beating Mom.

Keith nodded. "Everything's correct."

The clerk was about to click the button when the glass doors of the lobby were pushed open from outside. Two uniformed police officers walked in, with a woman following behind them.

"Wait! They can't get married!"

Mom texted back, "Where are you? Can you talk?"All they sent back was a location. It was an apartment complex about six miles from my house. Then their profile picture suddenly disappeared, and no more messages came through.Mom put down her phone and looked at me. "They stopped responding after sending the location."I put down my cutlery. "Someone must've taken away their phone. Let's call the cops."The officers arrived 15 minutes later. The apartment complex was old and run-down, with alleyways that were so complicated that even delivery drivers got lost.An officer glanced at the GPS. "The area's too big. We'll have to go door to door.""I'll go," I offered, looking up."You?""I'll just say my cat is missing. I'm a kid. Me going from house to house won't raise suspicion. But an adult would put them on guard. I'll put my phone in my pocket with the call still running. You can listen in."The officer hesitated for a moment, then nodded. No one answered at the first build

The interview was held in a small studio on the ground floor of the TV station. The host was a short-haired woman in her 30s named Sara Bale. She leaned forward slightly as she spoke, keeping her voice low, as if she were afraid of scaring me.Sara started with a few simple questions, like how old I was, what grade I was in, and what my favourite foods were.I answered them one by one.Sara nodded, then got to the real subject. "How did you know something was wrong with that man that day? What did you notice that made you try to stop your mom from getting married to him?"I sat there for a moment before answering, "It was because I had a bad dream."Sara froze. "Oh, a nightmare?""I dreamed that he beat up my mom every day after she married him. I was so scared that the first thing I did when I woke up was try to stop Mom from getting married."The studio was enveloped in a momentary silence. Sara looked conflicted, like she didn't know what to make of it.Mom, who was sitting

Getting approval to move into the military housing was a lot stricter than I'd expected.Mom made copies of her ID and the documents proving Grandma was her mother, along with a background check and the police report. Then she handed the whole stack over to the security desk.A middle-aged man in plain clothes was in charge of the review. He asked, "Whom are you living with?""My mom, Dorothy Tate.""Which building?""Building 7, Unit 2.""Go home and wait for the notice. You should hear back within three business days."Mom wanted to file her resignation during that period."Mom, I want to tag along." I jumped off the couch and grabbed Mom's hand.Mom paused for a second, then smiled. "Are you scared I'm going to disappear again, as I did in your nightmare?"I nodded."Alright, come with me then."I headed straight to HR with Mom, and she instructed, "Wait here for me. Don't run off.""Okay." I sat on the couch in the waiting area. Two of Mom's coworkers walked past with

I looked up at the officer. My voice shook, but I kept talking. "They dragged Mom and me into a car. Our suitcases are still there."Keith's smile froze as he stared at me, his composure slowly crumbling. "You fucking…"He jerked forward, and his handcuffs slammed against the armrest of the interrogation chair with a loud clang. The officer beside him pushed him back down. "Sit still!""What the hell are you talking about? What security cameras? There aren't any cameras in that alley…"The older officer already stood up, his walkie-talkie in hand. "Joe, pull this morning's security footage from the alley by the west entrance of Bay Garden."Keith went quiet. Bradley opened his mouth a couple of times, but not a word came out.It took less than 20 minutes to pull up the footage. The screen showed a gray, washed-out alley, with concrete underfoot and a metal gate at the end. Mom and I appeared at the edge of the frame, and Keith and Bradley came charging in right behind us.Keith

Bradley's expression changed drastically, and he backed up. "Don't listen to the kid!" He waved his hands, panic creeping into his voice. "Kids don't know what they're talking about! I don't have anything on me!"He turned and ran for the entrance. His dress shoe slipped on the marble floor. He stumbled into the doorframe, caught himself, then pushed open the glass doors and ran.The younger officer reacted fast. He chased after him. "Stop! Don't run!"The other officer stepped forward and grabbed Keith, pushing him against the counter. "You stay right here, too." The smile dropped from Keith's face. The officer turned to Mom. "You two need to come to the station and give a statement."Mom nodded, tears still clinging to her face, but her voice was calm now. "Okay."She turned to the clerk behind the counter. "Cancel the whole thing. I'm not getting married.""Please cancel it." Grandma looked at the clerk too."Why not?" Keith yelled, dropping his act.The officer gave Ke

Grandma came in with her cane, looking around until she saw me.Everyone in the lobby fell silent. The clerk hurried over. "Hello. Can I help you?""We're the police." The lead officer held up his badge. "We got a call. Someone's being forced to get married at knifepoint."The clerk looked stunned. "But this is a government office."The officer looked over at Mom, still filling out the marriage paperwork.Bradley's hand dropped from my shoulder. He bent down close to me, sounding panicked. "Did you fucking call the cops?"I screamed with all the strength I had. "Officer! They kidnapped my mom! They're forcing her to get married at knifepoint! My mom doesn't want to marry him! Please save my mom!"My voice cracked, and tears blurred my vision."Melissa, come here." Grandma came over and pulled me into her arms.Bradley struggled for a moment, refusing to let go."Let her go." Grandma tapped her cane against the floor. The officer stepped behind her, and Bradley finally let me
