Chapter 3

Author: Goodtale
Hearing my shout, Mom burst out of the bedroom.

I held up my arm for Mom to see. The bruising on the inside was already starting to show. "Keith pinched me! He also threatened to kill me if I told you! It was exactly like my dream!"

Mom's expression darkened instantly.

Keith clearly hadn't expected me to expose him like that. He immediately put on an innocent smile. "I didn't. Melissa accidentally bumped into something herself."

Mom pursed her lips in dissatisfaction. "Keith, maybe you should go home."

Keith stood up, his smile faltering. "Wait, just hear me out. She was the one who—"

Mom opened the door. "Get out."

Keith paused for a second, then lowered his voice. "My mom's not going to make it much longer. The doctor says she won't last more than two days. Her only wish is to see me get married. I was going to take you to the hospital after we got married so she could see you. Can you really bear to let an old woman die with that unresolved regret?"

Keith knew Mom was softhearted, so he used his sob story to try and pressure her.

I noticed Mom was wavering, so I lay down on the floor, crying out in pain.

"Just leave, Keith. I have to reconsider our marriage," Mom said without even looking at him.

Keith lowered his head, his voice tinged with disappointment. "Alright, I respect your decision. I'll always be here. Once you think it through, call me."

Mom crouched down and hugged me. "Melissa, I think something's wrong with him too. I'm staying home today and not going anywhere."

I nodded, but I still couldn't relax. After all, Keith had given up way too easily.

In my last life, he'd spent more than six months pretending to be a good man just to win Mom over. Today, he left without putting up a fight after Mom told him to leave.

Something was seriously off.

Just then, Mom's phone rang.

It was a call from Keith's best friend, Bradley Dunn. In my last life, every time Keith beat Mom, he was the person who dragged her into the bedroom and locked the door.

Mom answered the call and put it on speaker.

"Scarlett, come over quick. Keith just left your house, and he was so upset that he got into a car accident! He's bleeding badly. I don't think he's going to make it!"

Mom's chest heaved as she hung up and immediately ran for the door in a panic.

"Mom!" I rushed over and grabbed her. "You can't go!"

"Melissa, let go of me! Keith's been in an accident!"

"Even if something really happened, there are doctors! An ambulance can also get there faster than you can! Mom, you can't go!"

Mom froze on the spot. "Yeah, you're right."

My whole body was shaking from fear. I told her, "Mom, we're not safe here."

My mind raced as I tried to think of what to do. In the end, I decided to call my grandma, Dorothy Tate. She lived in military housing, which was the safest place for us to stay for now.

After Mom went through with the divorce despite Grandma's objections, Grandma cut off contact with her. But only I knew that Grandma secretly sent us money every month because she was worried we wouldn't be okay.

"Melissa, what's with the sudden call today—"

I cut her off, my voice urgent. "Grandma, ten minutes from now, have someone meet Mom and me at the west gate of the complex. I'll tell you everything when we see you."

Then I hung up.

Mom looked at me as if she wanted to say something, but I said, "There's no time. Mom, let's go!"

This time, Mom didn't ask why and rushed into the bedroom to change into a pair of flats.

"Mom, we're taking the side door."

We took the elevator down to the basement level, cut through the courtyard, and slipped out through a side gate that hardly anyone knew about. The metal gate creaked shut behind us.

The alley was deserted. Once we turned the corner, we'd be on the main road, and as soon as we got into the car Grandma had sent, we'd be safe.

I held Mom's hand as we walked, the wheels of our suitcase bumping over the gravel. When we turned the corner, I saw two people standing at the mouth of the alley. Keith was in front, while Bradley stood beside him, a cigarette hanging from his mouth.

A slow smile crept onto Keith's face. He lifted the cake in his hand and gave it a little shake. "Melissa, I bought you another cake. Once your mom and I get married, you can take your time eating it."

Mom texted back, "Where are you? Can you talk?"All they sent back was a location. It was an apartment complex about six miles from my house. Then their profile picture suddenly disappeared, and no more messages came through.Mom put down her phone and looked at me. "They stopped responding after sending the location."I put down my cutlery. "Someone must've taken away their phone. Let's call the cops."The officers arrived 15 minutes later. The apartment complex was old and run-down, with alleyways that were so complicated that even delivery drivers got lost.An officer glanced at the GPS. "The area's too big. We'll have to go door to door.""I'll go," I offered, looking up."You?""I'll just say my cat is missing. I'm a kid. Me going from house to house won't raise suspicion. But an adult would put them on guard. I'll put my phone in my pocket with the call still running. You can listen in."The officer hesitated for a moment, then nodded. No one answered at the first build

The interview was held in a small studio on the ground floor of the TV station. The host was a short-haired woman in her 30s named Sara Bale. She leaned forward slightly as she spoke, keeping her voice low, as if she were afraid of scaring me.Sara started with a few simple questions, like how old I was, what grade I was in, and what my favourite foods were.I answered them one by one.Sara nodded, then got to the real subject. "How did you know something was wrong with that man that day? What did you notice that made you try to stop your mom from getting married to him?"I sat there for a moment before answering, "It was because I had a bad dream."Sara froze. "Oh, a nightmare?""I dreamed that he beat up my mom every day after she married him. I was so scared that the first thing I did when I woke up was try to stop Mom from getting married."The studio was enveloped in a momentary silence. Sara looked conflicted, like she didn't know what to make of it.Mom, who was sitting

Getting approval to move into the military housing was a lot stricter than I'd expected.Mom made copies of her ID and the documents proving Grandma was her mother, along with a background check and the police report. Then she handed the whole stack over to the security desk.A middle-aged man in plain clothes was in charge of the review. He asked, "Whom are you living with?""My mom, Dorothy Tate.""Which building?""Building 7, Unit 2.""Go home and wait for the notice. You should hear back within three business days."Mom wanted to file her resignation during that period."Mom, I want to tag along." I jumped off the couch and grabbed Mom's hand.Mom paused for a second, then smiled. "Are you scared I'm going to disappear again, as I did in your nightmare?"I nodded."Alright, come with me then."I headed straight to HR with Mom, and she instructed, "Wait here for me. Don't run off.""Okay." I sat on the couch in the waiting area. Two of Mom's coworkers walked past with

I looked up at the officer. My voice shook, but I kept talking. "They dragged Mom and me into a car. Our suitcases are still there."Keith's smile froze as he stared at me, his composure slowly crumbling. "You fucking…"He jerked forward, and his handcuffs slammed against the armrest of the interrogation chair with a loud clang. The officer beside him pushed him back down. "Sit still!""What the hell are you talking about? What security cameras? There aren't any cameras in that alley…"The older officer already stood up, his walkie-talkie in hand. "Joe, pull this morning's security footage from the alley by the west entrance of Bay Garden."Keith went quiet. Bradley opened his mouth a couple of times, but not a word came out.It took less than 20 minutes to pull up the footage. The screen showed a gray, washed-out alley, with concrete underfoot and a metal gate at the end. Mom and I appeared at the edge of the frame, and Keith and Bradley came charging in right behind us.Keith

Bradley's expression changed drastically, and he backed up. "Don't listen to the kid!" He waved his hands, panic creeping into his voice. "Kids don't know what they're talking about! I don't have anything on me!"He turned and ran for the entrance. His dress shoe slipped on the marble floor. He stumbled into the doorframe, caught himself, then pushed open the glass doors and ran.The younger officer reacted fast. He chased after him. "Stop! Don't run!"The other officer stepped forward and grabbed Keith, pushing him against the counter. "You stay right here, too." The smile dropped from Keith's face. The officer turned to Mom. "You two need to come to the station and give a statement."Mom nodded, tears still clinging to her face, but her voice was calm now. "Okay."She turned to the clerk behind the counter. "Cancel the whole thing. I'm not getting married.""Please cancel it." Grandma looked at the clerk too."Why not?" Keith yelled, dropping his act.The officer gave Ke

Grandma came in with her cane, looking around until she saw me.Everyone in the lobby fell silent. The clerk hurried over. "Hello. Can I help you?""We're the police." The lead officer held up his badge. "We got a call. Someone's being forced to get married at knifepoint."The clerk looked stunned. "But this is a government office."The officer looked over at Mom, still filling out the marriage paperwork.Bradley's hand dropped from my shoulder. He bent down close to me, sounding panicked. "Did you fucking call the cops?"I screamed with all the strength I had. "Officer! They kidnapped my mom! They're forcing her to get married at knifepoint! My mom doesn't want to marry him! Please save my mom!"My voice cracked, and tears blurred my vision."Melissa, come here." Grandma came over and pulled me into her arms.Bradley struggled for a moment, refusing to let go."Let her go." Grandma tapped her cane against the floor. The officer stepped behind her, and Bradley finally let me
