Chapter 4

Author: Triple Threat
Dad and Mom searched high and low across Jerandale in my past life, but they never found Zoe.

So why was she standing right here in the middle of the crowd this time, utterly unbothered?

Questions swirled through my head, but I couldn't wrap my mind around any answers.

Right when chaos erupted in the room, I steeled myself, rushed straight up to Dad and the hospital director, and yelled at the top of my lungs, "I know who took Alex! It's her!"

I pointed right at Zoe, who was standing among the medical staff.

The entire room fell dead silent in an instant. Every single eye shifted toward Zoe.

Her mouth hung open, her face displaying a picture-perfect look of shock and disbelief. Her eyes turned red as she pleaded her innocence.

"Sweetie, how could you say such things? I only came into the room once last night to feed the baby. But after your parents turned me down, I left right away. Besides, I'm a nurse. Why would I ever kidnap a baby?"

Tears streamed down her delicate face, making her look entirely like an unfairly accused victim.

The other nurses chimed in as well.

"She's right. I saw Zoe walk out of the room empty-handed last night. She even cried when she got back, terrified the head nurse would scold her for failing her duty."

"Exactly, we can all vouch for her."

"Zoe didn't even have the time to do something like that."

As they babbled back and forth, the crowd's gazes toward me began to turn strange.

Even Dad, who had been harboring doubts, started to hesitate.

"No! It was her! She stole my baby brother! I'm not lying…" I tried to explain through sobs, desperate to make them believe me.

Zoe cried even harder. "Then do you have any proof? Mr. Hardy, I know your family is rich, but I'm just a low-level nurse. How could I possibly do something like that?

"Even if there's a misunderstanding, please don't use your status to intimidate me. I worked so hard to land this job. This job means everything to me.

"If you don't believe me, you can check the security cameras or ask the other staff on duty. I truly didn't do anything. I just glanced at the baby a few extra times because I cared."

Zoe wept pitifully, her delicate, vulnerable act pulling at the heartstrings of everyone present.

Some onlookers even pulled out their phones to record and shouted into the room, "Rich folks are picking on a poor nurse!"

"Ms. Scott, don't be scared. We'll all stand up for you. We won't let anyone frame you!"

Tears brimming in her red-rimmed eyes, Zoe looked at them gratefully. "Thank you, everyone. Thank you for believing me."

She then walked up to me, using her body to block the crowd's view, and flashed me a venomous sneer.

It was as if she were saying, "There's nothing you can do."

Driven mad with rage, I lunged forward to claw at her. "You took Alex, you evil woman!"

Dad grabbed me around the waist and held me back. "Ava, calm down!"

The onlookers, eager for more drama, egged it on.

"Look, everyone! A rich kid is beating people up!"

"So this is how high society raises their children?"

"No wonder the baby went missing. He probably didn't want to grow up in a family like this."

"Shut your mouths!" Veins bulged on Dad's forehead.

Mom bit her lip, looking so utterly broken she seemed ready to collapse at any second.

As Dad held me tightly in his arms, I felt tears swirling wildly in my eyes, threatening to spill over.

Certain of her victory, Zoe put on a hypocritical front. "Mr. and Mrs. Hardy, if there's nothing else, I'll be taking my leave. Patients on other floors are waiting, so I won't waste any more of your time finding your baby."

With that, she turned on her high heels to leave.

"Wait!"

Zoe turned around, a hint of a smirk playing at the corners of her eyes. "Is there something else?"

I glared at her. "I know where you hid Alex!"

Once he set his mind on something, nothing could persuade him otherwise. His absolute favorite thing to do was clutch my backpack to stop me from going to school."Ava, don't leave. Stay with me!"Every single time, I'd get a headache, while Dad just stood by, chuckling. "Alex, let go."Alex immediately pouted. "No!"Smiling, Mom picked him up in her arms. "Ava has to go to school. She'll be back this evening."Al

He has such an extraordinary sister."The relatives crowded around, showering me with praise."Ava, you're amazing!""You're a little hero!"Feeling shy from all the compliments, I hid my face in Mom's arms.Mom kissed my forehead softly. Zoe stared at me fiercely. Her gaze carried a tangled mix of emotions—hatred, fear, and sheer unwillingness to accept defeat."It's all because of you! If it weren't for you, I would have pulled it off. How on earth did a three-year-old child figure it out?"Dad's grip tightened around me.I blinked up at Zoe. "Because bad people have a stinky smell on them."Dad looked down at me, a flash of deep heartache cutting across his eyes.Zoe, however, completely unraveled. "I had it all planned out! Aunt Martha was going to take the baby away, and I was going to stay at the hospital so nobody would ever suspect me."Once the heat died down, I'd leave Jerandale. I'd give the baby a new name, and I'd tell him that I saved him. When he grew up, I'd bring him back. And by then, the Hardy family would have no choice but to compensate me! Why couldn't I get what I wanted?"Dad's gaze turned as cold as a blade. "Because he is not your tool. He is my son. He is the child Elise carried for nin

The hospital director's face turned as white as paper.I knew Dad wasn't just making empty threats. The Hardy family never bullied anyone, but we would never show mercy to anyone who tried to hurt our family.By noon that day, the story of the stolen newborn at the hospital hit the news.At first, people online were criticizing us, claiming rich folks were making a mountain out of a molehill, that nurses were just everyday working people, and that a three-year-old child's words couldn't be taken seriously. However, the official police report was released shortly after.Zoe and Martha were facing charges for child trafficking, unlawful drugging, and tampering with hospital security equipment. The hospital staff were also implicated in the crimes. All the online backlash vanished in an instant, replaced by a wave of public apologies."My goodness, the baby was only a day old!""That sister is brilliant!""A three-year-old saved her whole family.""Everyone who was bad-mouthing

Upon hearing the news, Mom held Alex tightly and sobbed for a long time.Dad sat by her side, reassuring her over and over again. "It's over now. Everything's okay."But I knew Mom was scared out of her mind. Her hands wouldn't stop shaking, and she couldn't even hold a glass of water steady.Dad replaced the entire staff on the floor. The original nurses, janitors, and security guards were all placed under investigation. He also called Grandpa to bring the family's bodyguards over. When Grandpa arrived, he was shaking so badly he could barely hold his cane steady. The second he stepped through the door, he pulled me into his arms. "Ava, were you scared?"I shook my head, but the moment I opened my mouth, tears spilled over. "Grandpa, Alex almost got lost."Grandpa's eyes turned red, too. "He's not lost. You're amazing, Ava. You saved Alex."He walked over to Mom's bed and looked down at Alex in his swaddle. His hands trembled uncontrollably. "As long as the baby is back safe…

Dad dropped to his knees and pulled me into his arms. "Ava… I almost lost you all."I wiped away his tears with my tiny hands. "You didn't lose anyone. I found Alex! From now on, we'll watch over him together."Dad pulled me into a tight hug, squeezing so hard that it almost hurt. But I didn't struggle because I knew he was truly terrified. The police arrested Zoe and Martha. Before leaving, Zoe was still crying and looking at Dad through her tears. "Mr. Hardy, I was wrong! I wasn't in my right mind… My family is so poor! I just wanted a better life! The baby isn't hurt, so please, spare me!"The warmth in Dad's eyes was completely gone. "The baby isn't hurt? He was born just yesterday! Yet you stuffed him into a laundry cart, crammed gauze into his mouth, and drugged me. And now you're telling me he isn't hurt?"Zoe sobbed even harder. "I truly never meant to hurt him! I only wanted to take him away! I would have raised him well!"Those words sent an icy chill straight through
