Chapter 2

Author: Peachy Peach
This time, my parents brought Lily and me onto the cruise ship that had once claimed my life.

The familiar deck.

Every night, after all the guests fell asleep, I had to kneel on the floor and scrub it until it gleamed.

Before I could even rest for a moment, I had to go to the cargo hold on the right and haul cargo.

The blisters on my palms burst with blood, scabbed over, and split open again and again.

“Millie, you should work in the lower hold. You’re shy, and you won’t have to interact with strangers there.”

Mom pushed me toward the bottom deck.

The lower hold was filled with heavy industrial chemicals. I developed leukemia in my previous life because I spent so much time there.

This time, I refused to suffer through it again, even if dying was the only way to escape.

“I’m going to work at the front desk.” That had been Lily’s job in my previous two lives.

All she had to do was sit at the front desk and look after the guests’ luggage.

“No! Lily can’t work in the lower hold.”

Mom looked at her with heartache.

“Lily is already pitiful enough for having to take this job because of us. Besides, she isn’t in good health. How could you bear to send her to the lower hold? Millie, don’t be so selfish.”

I lifted my eyes to Lily.

Her skin was fair, and her cheeks were rosy. She looked nothing like someone in poor health.

Then I lowered my head and looked at myself.

I was the one who looked unhealthy.

I had stayed up late studying throughout all three years of high school, leaving my skin sallow and my wrists so thin they looked as if they could snap with one twist.

Yet Mom gave every expensive supplement to Lily.

I shook my head. “I’m not going.”

“You owe money, so you have to repay it. Who said you get to decide whether you agree?”

A large hand clamped around my arm and yanked me forward.

I stumbled as that person dragged me out.

I was about to struggle when I turned and saw the hand that had grabbed me.

I froze.

There was a faint scar at the base of the thumb.

When I was in middle school, someone struck me with a rock while I protected Lily, our newly adopted sister.

My older brother, Sebastian Brooks, used that hand to shield my head.

Blood from his pierced palm had flowed down my face, and I was terrified.

Back then, the pain turned Sebastian’s face pale, yet he smiled and comforted me. “What are you afraid of? I'm here. No one can bully you.”

But at some point, Sebastian changed too.

“She’s just an orphan. Can’t you give way to her?”

He began questioning why I was so petty and why I was always fighting Lily for everything.

But I never expected him to be part of this scam too.

Under my gaze, he unconsciously touched the mask on his face. “What are you looking at? Are you trying to slack off? Get to work in the lower hold!”

His shove made me stagger.

My vision suddenly went black, and I crashed heavily to the ground.

My forehead struck the edge of the deck, and warm blood trickled down along my brow.

“Millie!”

Mom and Dad cried out at the same time.

Sebastian instinctively took a step forward, his voice tense. “Are you all right?”

“Mom, Dad, I’m seasick.”

Lily suddenly swayed.

Mom and Dad immediately turned around to support her. “Where does it hurt? We’ll take you to the medical bay right now!”

Sebastian’s gaze lingered on Lily and me for a moment before he scooped her up and carried her away.

“I need someone to notify the doctor at once. We have a patient here.”

Lily wrapped her arms around Sebastian’s neck and turned to shoot me a smug smile.

I fell to the floor and watched the three of them hurry away. Then I looked at the ship sitting motionless by the shore.

Someone actually believed a lie that flimsy.

[Don’t worry, host. Your body is beginning to deteriorate because you’re about to leave this world. It’s a normal reaction.]

Only six hours remained.

I turned to Sebastian. His eyes were so bloodshot they looked ready to bleed. The next second, he kicked the door open.Lily spun around in terror. She quickly understood the situation when she saw the people standing in the doorway.“I was just packing up Millie’s belongings. I never expected her to take her tantrum so far that something would really happen to her.”Even now, she was still trying to turn them against me.But this time, no one took the bait.I stood beside Mom and clearly heard the sound of her teeth cracking as she clenched them.“It’s all your fault! If it weren’t for you, how could my Millie have died? Give me back my daughter!”Mom let out a heart-wrenching cry.She lunged forward, grabbed Lily by the hair, and slapped her again and again.Lily’s face visibly swelled.“Mom! What are you doing?! Dad, help me! Mom’s gone crazy!”“She isn’t the one who’s crazy. I am.”The hatred in Dad’s eyes was terrifyingly intense.“I must have been blind and out of my mind. I took

The air fell deathly silent.Mom looked as if she had not understood him.“What did you say?”The captain lowered his head.“The DNA from the remains completely matches your daughter, Millie Brooks.”Sebastian’s body slammed into the doorframe. The tremendous noise jolted my stunned parents back to their senses.Dad grabbed the captain.“What’s today’s date and time?”The captain froze for a moment. “August twenty-ninth, eleven twenty p.m.”“The past hasn’t changed. Time hasn’t gone backward. It can’t be Millie…”Dad desperately tried to convince himself. But the terror in Mom’s eyes was impossible to hide.Sebastian seized the captain by the collar. “Take us there! Now!”Cold air rushed at us from the freezer in the lower hold.Mom clung tightly to Dad’s clothes as she walked forward. The freezer was opened. Mom turned away the instant she looked inside.“Ugh!”She braced herself against the wall and retched violently. The body inside had already been torn apart by the rapidly spinnin

Lily recoiled in fright.Mom immediately pulled her into her arms and covered her ears.“Captain, why are you telling us such frightening things? You’ve scared my daughter.”Dad looked displeased. “What does that have to do with us? Why did you come all the way here to tell us?”The captain hesitated.“Because we were missing only one person when we took the headcount earlier.”The air suddenly fell silent.Mom’s hand froze on Lily’s head.Dad’s and Sebastian’s eyes widened at the same time.Mom grabbed Dad’s hand.“How could it be Millie? Let’s go and check!”Dad’s lips trembled, and he could not speak. He pulled Mom toward the door.I watched their panicked expressions in surprise. Were they actually worried about me?I thought they would be eager for their unfilial daughter to disappear. But Sebastian grabbed Dad’s arm.“Dad! It can’t possibly be Millie.”His face looked grim, but he still gritted his teeth. “If something really happened to her, how could we still be standing here p

“Millie!”“Save her!”Mom, Dad, and Sebastian rushed to the side of the ship almost at the same time. One of Sebastian’s feet was already on the barrier, ready to jump after me.A huge wave crashed over the ship, making the entire cruise liner tilt violently.Lily stumbled and fell to the floor. “Mom, Dad—”That one cry made all three of them immediately turn around and rush to her side. They shielded her protectively.Cold seawater pressed in from every direction. When I opened my eyes again, my soul had been forcibly dragged back to my parents’ side.“Explain yourself. Why am I still here? Didn’t you say I could leave this world once I died?”The system sounded slightly guilty.“That is how it works in theory. But the passage hasn’t been used for too long. I’m working hard to rebuild it.”I was silent for a moment. “So, you’re telling me that I’m dead but still can’t leave?”The system did not dare make a sound.I closed my eyes and felt like cursing. But there was nothing I could do

He instinctively tried to hide. But in the next second, his first reaction was still to shield Lily behind him.Just as he had once shielded me.“Millie, just look at yourself! What do you think you’re doing?”Dad’s eyes burned with fury.“We’re all working here to help out. We could overlook you lazing around in your room, but you’ve barged into the banquet looking disheveled. You’re making a complete fool of yourself!”Tears streamed down my face as I suddenly laughed.“Weren’t you the ones who brought those men here? Now that you see me like this, shouldn’t you be satisfied?”Dad frowned deeply. “What nonsense are you talking about?”Mom looked impatient.“All we asked you to do was deal cards and pour drinks. What, are you some spoiled princess? Are those tasks beneath you?“How did I end up with such an ungrateful daughter? Heaven must be blind!”I stared blankly at her, then looked at Lily. Her hand trembled slightly around her wineglass. What else was there to misunderstand?I b

I returned to my room and looked for something to stop the bleeding from my forehead.A document folder fell out of Lily’s bag.It contained my Westbridge University acceptance letter and documents.I crushed the acceptance letter in my hand.I was not exactly brilliant. A problem that took the top students ten minutes to solve might take me half an hour to figure out.I had stayed up countless nights to get into Westbridge University. So, my parents had planned this long ago. They wanted me to work off the debt here while Lily used my identity to attend Westbridge University in my place. The cabin door suddenly opened.Several unfamiliar men walked in.I instinctively backed away. “Who are you? Get out!”“You’re Millie Brooks, right? Your parents sent you here to entertain clients and work off the debt.”It was absurd. No matter how badly my parents wanted to toughen me up and teach me a lesson, they had only ever made me do hard labor. How could they possibly have made a decision li
