Ara stared down from the parapet, heart slamming against her ribs. Under the searchlights, the ten captured players knelt on the frozen pavement, shaking, iron restraints locked around their wrists. Behind each one stood an armored soldier, rifle pressed to the back of their skull.

Through the glare, she recognized faces. Eska and Trish, two of the youngest players, the ones who'd trusted her from the start. Blood ran down Eska's cheek. Trish was staring up at the roof, trying hard not to cry.

The hooded man reached up and unlatched the mask covering the lower half of his face, the metal catch clicking softly in the cold air. Underneath, he looked older than she'd expected."My name is Victor Kane," he said, voice carrying easily across the empty concrete. "I built the system. I built the players. And whether you want to hear it or not, I built you too."Ara froze, knuckles going white around her knife, every muscle in her locking up at once. "You didn't create me," she snapped, eyes burning. "I'm my own person."He smiled, thin and cold, nothing in his eyes moving with it, like the expression was something he'd learned once and never quite mastered. "I engineered the conditions for your rebirth, Ara. The outbreak that drowned you in that river. The interface that caught your failing heart before it stopped for good. The second life you're so attached to. All of it was planned, down to the smallest detail."Ronan stepped out of the shadows, rifle up, sights locked on Victor

Ara took the chip from Silas, fingers brushing his for a second as she held the tiny square up to the blue glow of the monitors. Her eyes burned as she stared at it, mind already racing.Someone close to them—someone who ate with them, fought beside them, stood on the same wall during the siege—had been feeding NexMind their every move. Someone they trusted."Play it," she said, voice tight. "Play the file."Silas's fingers moved fast over the keyboard. Static hissed through the speakers before settling into a low, distorted stream. The voice was muffled through a scrambler, but the the rhythm was familiar in a way that made her skin feel like something was crawling on it. Whoever it was sounded stressed, breath uneven, but every word came out with cold precision."—City Hall perimeter secured at western coordinates... Player 001 is actively expanding her neural synchronization... There are weaknesses in the lower drainage pipes... combat headcount—"It was all there. Locations, plans

Ara ran, boots pounding against cold concrete, following the scream still echoing off the walls, the sound curling through the stairwell long after it should have died out. Ronan and Silas kept pace right behind her, their argument from minutes ago was forgotten completely as they pushed forward together. They turned into the lower corridor and found a crowd already gathered near the storage room, emergency lights throwing long shadows across the stone as players jostled for a look, gasping, some of them already backing away toward the far wall."Another one's dead?!" Eska screamed, hands over her mouth, backing away from the doorway. "Look….the wound's fresh! His throat was just cut! It's Kade!"Before Ara could push through, Eska pointed at the body's shoulder, and there it was—the same glowing purple mark, carved into Kade's neck, pulsing faintly just like it had on Trish, as if the two wounds were speaking the same cold language.Panic swept the hallway."Two of us in one night!"

Ara stared at the dark purple mark glowing on Trish's neck, her mind racing through everything she thought she knew about the girl. Trish had been one of the players they'd pulled off the airship personally, someone who'd spent hours curled up in that cargo bay, scared and grateful, thanking Ara over and over for coming back for her.She was there with them, Ara thought, cold settling into her chest. But if she really had the mark, she was never actually on their side.Eska nodded beside her, tears still streaming, hands shaking as she pressed her face into her sleeve.Ara called everyone into the hallway and stepped aside so they could all see the mark for themselves. Nobody said anything for a long moment, just stared at the corporate symbol pulsing under the dead girl's skin.Dinklage broke the silence first, his mechanical fingers flexing with a sharp whine, the sound cutting through the tension like a blade. "We've got a spy," he growled, optic whirring as it scanned the faces ar

The ground under the courtyard started shaking, deep cracks spidering across the pavement in jagged lines. A second later, a column of fire tore out of nowhere, scattering the soldiers in every direction, panic breaking their formation instantly, rifles firing wild into the smoke.Ronan's team hit the perimeter fast. Before the soldiers could even clear the smoke from their visors, Dinklage came through it like a wrecking ball, his arm sweeping through shields and dropping three men in one motion, metal screaming against metal. Beside him, Maksim let loose bolts of dark red fire that lit up the enemy line, the heat rolling off him in waves. Ronan moved through the middle of all of it like a shadow, too fast for anyone to track, tearing through the ranks sharply, never once breaking stride.Watching the chaos take over, Ara saw her opening. She used the crossfire as cover and lunged for the officer. She grabbed the woman by the collar, spun her around, and pressed her dagger against he

SURRENDER OR WATCH YOUR RECRUITS DIE."Ronan landed beside her, dropping from the watchtower, rifle already up. "We take them now," he growled. "I can drop the searchlight gunner and the lead officer before they even know we're up here.""No," Ara said fast. "Look at their formation. One shot from up here and every hostage dies before we get close."His jaw locked, knuckles white on the grip as he stared at the barrels against Esk

  • Reborn in the Apocalypse: My Level-Up System    The File That Should Not Exist

Ara POV: The hideout was not what she expected. She had pictured something grim. Bare concrete, a single flickering light, maybe a bucket in the corner. What she got instead was a gutted storage room three floors underground with actual furniture, a generator humming in the back, and the smell of

  • Reborn in the Apocalypse: My Level-Up System    Player 001

Ara POV: "Do you accept your first mission?" "Absolutely not," Ara said out loud, to empty the air, in an empty lot, like a completely sane person. "No. Who even are you? Get out of my head." The voice said nothing for a moment. Then it said, pleasantly and mechanically and with absolutely no re

Chapter 2: The Day Before The End Ara POV: "Ara? Ara, wake up already!" She shot upright, gasping for air. Her hands flew to her throat first. Then her arms. Then her face. She noticed there were no bites, no blood, and no open wounds oozing something dark and wrong. She pressed both palms flat

  • Reborn in the Apocalypse: My Level-Up System    The Traitor in the Room

Ara POV: The hideout had become a warzone in under two minutes. Three of Elena's players had made it through the lower entrance before Ronan managed to collapse the stairwell, and the fight that followed was loud and ugly and nothing like the clean action sequences she had seen in movies before th
