Chapter 1

"We're screwed. The tracking system just crashed. There's no getting back that 200 billion dollars now."

"Chester Gardner, this is all on you for insisting on showing off that trash program of yours!"

"Yeah, we're going to get fired by the bank now!"

When the familiar voices hit me, I realized I had been reborn.

Three minutes ago, hackers stole the bank's encryption keys and hacked straight through the firewall.

If we moved fast enough, my colleagues' solid skills could still turn things around. Yet, Chester insisted on showing off the tracking program he built himself.

To make it worse, Nancy Cost backed him up and even told us to give the newcomer a chance.

"Nancy, what should I do now? Is the bank going to make me pay for this?"

Chester was so panicked that he looked like he might cry. He was even stumbling on his words.

Nancy comforted him gently, "They won't do that. I'll find a way to fix this. Even if it goes wrong, you won't be blamed."

She then shot me a cold glare. "Spencer Quill, why aren't you coming up with a recovery plan yet? Do you want everyone to go to prison because of your mistake?"

It was the same in my past life. Nancy was the first to throw the blame on me.

I was also worried that Chester's mistake might drag down the rest of the team, so I stayed up all night to fix things and recover the money.

In the end, Nancy held a grudge against me and got me thrown into prison.

I wasn't going to do that this time.

"It wasn't me who used the self-made tracking program. The mistake had nothing to do with me."

Tears slid down Chester's face, his voice choked with sobs. "Mr. Quill, you said you'd have our backs if anything went wrong. Now that something's happened, you're backing out?"

I snorted out loud and replied coldly, "I did say that, but that was two years ago. Besides, I was talking about work. Clearly, this goes beyond what I'd promise to take responsibility for."

Nancy couldn't stand anyone treating Chester harshly. Her eyes flared with anger as she snapped, "If the bank hands down a penalty, do you really think you'll get off scot-free? Get to work. Use your skills to track and recover the money.

She'd already issued me the order, leaving me no room to argue.

The other colleagues all looked at me pleadingly, trying to butter me up. For now, I was the only one capable of recovering the money.

I sat down calmly but didn't touch my computer. Instead, I wrote a resignation letter and handed it to Nancy.

"Sorry. I can't track it. Besides, I'm resigning."

Seeing how serious I sounded, Chester panicked instantly.

"You're an ungrateful traitor! Our team always treated you well, but you're abandoning us at this hour! As the team leader, you should be responsible for overseeing us. This loss should fall on you. You may leave, but not before you recover the money or sign a liability agreement!"

Thinking about the 200 billion dollars lost, the other colleagues shifted the blame onto me, just like him.

"Yes, you're the team leader, so this is on you! It's all your fault, so you should bear full responsibility for the loss."

I had built the IT team from scratch. But before the loss was confirmed, they had already followed Chester, pinning the blame on me.

It was honestly disappointing.

I flashed a smile.

I flashed a calm smile. "Is that so?"The very next moment, Felix stormed into the basement with his bodyguards and the police."Chester Gardner, Nancy Cost, the police now have solid evidence that you both colluded with a criminal ring in an attempt to steal Mr. Watch's assets. You're coming with us!"The police approached Chester and Nancy, then handcuffed them to take them away.Nancy was stunned, then started thrashing wildly. "Spencer's the one colluding with the criminal ring! This has nothing to do with us. On what grounds are you arresting us?"Chester panicked completely. Seeing the police, he got nervous and tried to shift the blame.Of all people present, Nancy was the only one who could take the blame for him. Without hesitation, he dumped everything on Nancy."Mr. Watch, it was all Nancy's doing! She threatened me into doing this! I had nothing to do with it! I'm a victim, too. Look, I even lost my hands. What could I possibly do? If you're going to arrest someone,

  • Reborn in the Firewall   Chapter 8

Back when Chester watched me track the other party down, he had a weird expression on his face. When I went through the CCTV footage, I discovered him texting someone else on his smartwatch. He also promised that Chester would be the head of Watch's Group IT department. As the head of the department, he was set for life.Everyone said Chester found a blessing in disguise. His hands were destroyed by Felix, but he gained Felix's guilt and support. He was bound for success in this lifetime.Chester was assigned to work in Watch Group. He couldn't code h

Nancy chided, "Spencer, you tried to steal Mr. Watch's money, but when your plan failed, you twisted the truth and pinned the blame on Chester and me! You could even turn on your own fiancee. That's cruel!"Glancing at the evidence on the laptop, Felix uttered coldly, "Spencer, the evidence is damning. What do you have to say?"I strained against the restraints of the electric chair and shouted myself hoarse, "It wasn't me! If I wanted to drain your account, why would I go online and leave traces behind? With my skills, there isn't anyone in this world who can break into my system."Laughing out loud, Nancy twisted my defense into evidence. She raised her voice. "Hear that, Mr. Watch? He practically admitted it. No one can break into his system. Didn't he refuse to join your company earlier? Maybe this time, he just came looking for a chance to siphon money out of your account!"She was blatantly twisting my words. I was so furious I didn't even know what to say anymore.Felix st

When Nancy came to question me, her eyes were swollen and red. Her hatred for me was visible."Spencer, you've worked with Chester for a few years. How could you stab him in the back? Even if you wanted the credit, you shouldn't have used his life as a stepping stone. He can't use his hands to code anymore!"I found her accusatory tone incredibly grating.Glancing at her, I shot back, "He only has himself to blame for this. Nancy, rather than worrying about him now, maybe think about what Mr. Watch would do to you. You should know he doesn't spare anyone who takes his money from him." Nancy glared at me, then clenched her teeth. She shouted, "Do you really think you can stay out of this? I heard you're working for Mr. Watch now, his lapdog. He even listens to you. I'm giving you three days. Get him to let Chester and me go, or you'll pay the price!"I narrowed my eyes.A few days ago, Felix had personally come to recruit me. His company was setting up an electronic asset vault,

Nancy thought her words could wash the blame off her and conveniently shift Felix's fury onto me. However, rich people were smart, especially Felix, who had weathered more storms than most people ever would. He understood in an instant that I dared speak to him that way because I had real skill to back it up.Releasing his grip on me slowly, he gazed at me and asked, "What do you want?"I glanced at Chester, whose legs were shaking in fear."It's simple. I merely want justice. Mr. Watch, I hope you'll investigate everything that happened at the bank today. Spare the innocent, and make sure those who harm your interest pay the price."Felix's gaze swept over Chester and the rest. Chester immediately trembled in fear."Sure, I'll grant your request. Bring in the best equipment immediately so Spencer here can track the thieves!"I sat down at the workstation and resumed tracking the thieves' location.Their firewall was stronger than before, so it took me some time to break throug

Downstairs, the sound of the convoy arriving echoed. A middle-aged man flanked by a team of bodyguards entered the bank.Gary's knees went weak in fear as he kneeled on the ground and begged, "Spencer, if Mr. Watch's money is lost for real, we'll be done for. I'll ask someone to bring the best equipment available here. Please, we really need you!"The other colleagues, including Nancy, were watching the CCTV footage. Felix and his men had stepped into the elevator, heading to the 33rd floor.Nancy was frantic, nearly in tears. Grabbing my arm, she dragged me over to the computer."Spence, you know exactly what kind of man Mr. Watch is. The last bank that made him lose 20 million dollars was practically skinned alive. You managed to get the money back just now. That means those hackers are nothing to you. You must know how to get it back, right? "As for the equipment, mine is the best. Use mine!"She moved quickly, placing her equipment in front of me.Glancing at the elevator n
