But there was no way Jay would claim Samantha, not here, not now. But would Samantha, so proud and self-satisfied in her own importance, humble herself and allow herself to be humiliated and dumped in this way? I thought not.

“What do you mean, Mels?” Jay asked, reaching for me, but I pulled away from his touch before he could lay a hand on me.

“She’s just a woman I chose to help,” he went on, his tone growing hard and defensive. “What exactly are you trying to imply?”
