Chapter 1

At the pack's annual ritual, everyone had their eyes closed in solemn prayer.

A piercing scream shattered the silence.

"Oh God, something just fell onto the altar!"

All eyes snapped open. There, on the sacrificial altar, lay a baby wrapped in red cloth.

His body shriveled before our eyes. In less than ten seconds, he was nothing but a desiccated corpse.

The crowd screamed in horror.

I heard a malicious giggle right beside me.

I looked up and caught Chloe watching from the bushes. She shot me a taunting smirk before bolting.

Damian immediately halted the ritual. His mother, Juliet, rushed forward to check on the baby.

The body was beyond recognition. All anyone could tell was that the victim had been a baby.

Damian barely glanced at the pup before shaking his head at me. "It's pointless. The baby's dead."

Chloe's smug smile flashed across my mind, and the last of my restraint snapped.

I stormed up to the bushes and shouted, "Chloe, get out here! What did you do?"

The thicket was vast and dense. A ten-year-old could hide in there and never be found.

"If you don't come out, I swear I'll burn this entire thicket to the ground."

My threat didn't faze Chloe in the slightest. She shot back without a hint of fear. "Go ahead. Burn it. If I die in the fire, you'll be a murderer too."

Damian arrived moments later and grabbed my arm. "Crystal, calm down. Chloe is just a pup. Don't scare her."

I clenched my jaw and glared at him, my eyes bloodshot.

In my past life, he was the same. Nate was dead, and all he cared about was his childhood sweetheart's daughter.

Juliet's eyes were red as she said, "Nate was supposed to become the next Alpha. What Chloe did was truly out of line.

"But Crystal, don't push this too far. You and Damian are still young. You can have another pup."

Damian stepped forward, trying to comfort me. "Mom's right, Crystal. You don't have to take it so hard. He was only three months old. We barely even knew him. But I've watched Chloe grow up."

I froze. "You think the one who died is Nate?"

I had already handed my son to my parents before the ritual began.

So who was the corpse lying on the altar?

Damian pulled me into his arms to stop me. "I know it's hard to accept, but what's done is done. And Chloe is still young. She doesn't know any better..."

Before he could finish, I shoved him away.

"She doesn't know any better? Is that your excuse? So killing someone is fine as long as you don't know any better? She just gets to walk away?"

I pulled a firestone from my bag.

"Chloe, I'm counting to three. If you don't come out on your own, I'll burn you alive in these bushes."

If I didn't stop this little monster now, more people would die at her hands.

"One!"

The firestone blazed in my hand, its flames illuminating half my face.

Chloe must have sensed I wasn't bluffing. She yelled back, "Go ahead and burn me! I'm not coming out! I'll die right here!"

"Two!"

Damian lunged forward and tried to snatch the fire stone from my grip. "Enough, Crystal! "If something happens to Chloe, can you bear the consequences?"

I shoved him away hard and locked eyes with him. "She just killed someone. Why aren't you asking her if she can live with that?"

The word "three" was already on my lips.

In the end, Chloe cracked under the pressure and crawled out of the bushes, sulking every step of the way.

"Who did you throw onto the altar?"

She stood there chewing on a blade of wild grass, looking completely unbothered.

"Who else? Your son."

I slapped her hard across the face.

The blade of grass went flying, along with half a bloody tooth.

The slap left Chloe's ears ringing.

When the shock wore off, her eyes turned red, and she clutched her cheek in disbelief.

"How dare you hit me? You bitch! My mom has never hit me!"

I grabbed her by the collar. "That slap is one your mother should've given you years ago—for spoiling you rotten and turning you into a monster."

I slapped her again. "That one was for the pup you killed. Aren't you afraid he'll come back to haunt you?"

Chloe clutched her cheek. "So what? I didn't mean to. I was just curious what would happen if a baby was sacrificed. I didn't think he'd actually die."

Before long, the day of Chloe's exile arrived.Serena, unable to cope with one devastating blow after another, began to lose her mind. She would often cradle the little blanket her son had been wrapped in when he died, imagining he was still with her. With my father's withdrawal of funding, Damian's pack was crippled. After the scandal, the pack's reputation was in ruins, and no other pack was willing to work with them.Damian drowned in massive debt, and the pack teetered on the brink of collapse.Neighboring packs smelled blood and closed in, intent on swallowing his territory whole.Desperate and out of options, Damian came crawling back to me.He knelt before my house. He looked nothing like the man who had come here demanding answers the last time.Gone was the aggression. Gone was the arrogance. He humbled himself completely. His temples had gone gray, and his frame had thinned. He was a shadow of the Alpha he had once been."Crystal, I'm begging you. I have nowhere else to go. M

He thought I wouldn't dare. But I agreed without missing a beat."Fine. No problem. Let's sign the papers right now."Damian went rigid. "You... what did you just say?""I said let's dissolve the mate bond right now. Is that so hard to understand?"Damian fell silent. My family funded most of his pack's projects. If I dissolved the mate bond, my father would pull his investment. His pack would suffer massive losses, and Damian could end up buried in debt. The thought immediately softened his tone."Crystal, I think maybe we should—"A slap sent him reeling before he could finish. My father stood before him like a wall, his expression grim."Who do you think you are? How dare you bargain with my daughter?"My father was the Alpha of a powerful pack. His mere presence carried such overwhelming authority that Damian's blood ran cold."You have two choices. First, dissolve the mate bond with my daughter. I'll pull every investment and partnership from your pack."Damian's knees nearly gave

The ritual had drawn nearly every member of the pack to the altar grounds. They quickly gathered around. After learning the full story, they began pointing fingers at Chloe and Serena."Serves them right. They tried to kill someone else's pup and ended up killing their own.""Like mother, like daughter.""The Werewolf Bureau is right here. There's no getting out of this now."The crowd murmured among themselves. Serena was on the verge of a complete breakdown. She couldn't bring herself to look at what was left of her son's body.Serena ?pointed at me and cursed, "You evil bitch! You switched out Axel on purpose! You deliberately set this up to hurt my baby! I'll make you pay! I'll make you pay for this!"Her eyes blazed crimson as she charged at me.I knocked her to the ground with a single slap. She clutched her cheek and glared up at me, eyes full of pure hatred.I looked down at her and sneered. "Your daughter threw your son onto the altar and had him drained dry. You were the one

The color drained from their faces the moment they saw Nate, safe and unharmed, cradled in my father's arms.Damian rushed over in disbelief, pulled back the blanket wrapped around him, and checked him over and over. When his senses confirmed that the baby really was our son, his eyes went wide."How can you be here? How are you not dead?"My father slapped him across the face, sending Damian staggering back several steps."Who the hell are you? How dare you curse my grandson?"By now, Chloe had realized something was very wrong. She blurted out, "Impossible! The baby I threw onto the altar was definitely him. There's no mistake! Don't think you can fool us with a fake baby!"Damian looked dazed, his eyes hollow as he shook his head. "No. I just confirmed it through our blood bond. He's my son. There can't be any mistake.""Then who was the one thrown onto the altar?"The pup had been drained dry in under ten seconds. There was no way to recognize him anymore.Damian's gaze snapped to

Before the body had completely withered into a husk, I stole a quick glance.I hadn't gotten a clear look, but something about the pup seemed familiar.I already had a sinking suspicion of who the pup was.But when I reached the altar, the body was gone.My heart dropped. I seized Damian by the collar and demanded answers."Where is the pup? What did you do with the body?"Damian caught my hand and tried to soothe me. "The pup is dead. Nothing will bring him back."We'll tell everyone Nate died in an accident and hold a proper funeral. Then we'll put this behind us."I wasn't listening to his excuses. I raised my voice and demanded again, "I asked you, where's the baby?"Damian frowned, his tone suggesting I was being unreasonable. "I already told you to let this go. Stop dwelling on this. Do you really want to turn this into a public scandal?"I took a deep breath, fighting to keep my voice from shaking with rage. "But that was an innocent life. You can't just sweep it under the rug."

The look of indifference on her face pushed me over the edge.I couldn't fathom how a ten-year-old could be this vicious.I grabbed her by the collar and hauled her into the air.Chloe's feet dangled in the air as she thrashed in my grip."Let go of me, you bitch!""You wanted to know what being sacrificed felt like, didn't you? You can find out yourself."I was hauling her toward the altar when Damian blocked my path.He pleaded, "Chloe knows she was wrong. She's just a pup. Do you really have to be this harsh?"What's done is done. I'll give our son a proper funeral. Isn't that enough?"The absurdity of it nearly choked me. He hadn't cared about his son while the boy was alive, yet now he wanted to stage a grand funeral and play the grieving father.Chloe sank her teeth into my hand. I winced and loosened my grip. Blood dripped from my fingertips onto the ground. The moment she was free, she darted behind Damian.Damian shielded her. "Nate is dead. Do you want Chloe to pay with her l
