Chapter 3

Author: Perfect Timing
This wasn't a random attack. It was a premeditated betrayal.

Without this evidence, I'd have been hunted down even if I escaped. I acted fast, texting Frida from Russell's phone.

[Have you met those guys? What do they look like?]

[Nope, too much trouble. I just told them to handle the girl you're with.]

This was perfect, meaning they wouldn't tell Frida from me.

[Babe, where are you? I miss you.]

[Close by. Once this is over, you're all mine.]

[Why wait? Come now. I'll tie Lottie up while she's out and meet you.]

[Hell yeah, I'm on my way!]

I smirked at the screen. They'd face the consequences for trying to ruin me.

I set up Russell's recording gear in the tent's corner, linked to his phone for remote monitoring. He slept soundly under the pills' effect, and I looked at his peaceful face, the one that once charmed everyone, making people envy me for being his girlfriend.

No one saw the rot inside, how he'd plotted to destroy me for Frida's wealth and connections.

I kicked him, leaving a red mark on his skin. Frida's texts showed the thugs were hardened ex-cons. With Russell like this, I didn't believe they'd hold back.

Now, less than an hour remained. I bolted, my heart pounding as I ran faster than ever, not stopping until the tent was a speck in the distance. Hiding behind a boulder, I pulled up the feed on my phone.

Soon, two rough voices crackled through. The kidnappers had arrived.

"It's dark in there. Are they asleep? Let's grab the girl and ditch the guy," one said.

The other snorted, "Ditch him? The hirer wants her to be humiliated in front of him."

"Rich folks play dirty."

"Enough pep talk. Let's get the job done."

Joakim Dodson, a scar slicing across his nose and jaw, unzipped the tent. I recognized him instantly as one of my tormentors from my past life.

He lunged at the bed, then cursed. "What the hell? Only one person?"

His flashlight switched on, catching Russell, naked and sprawled. The sight caught him off guard.

Russell stirred as the pills wore off, opening his eyes to see a big man looming over him. He tried to scream, but the latter quickly stuffed a sock in his mouth.

"Quiet!" Joakim hissed.

Michael Harris, the second thug, poked his head in. "What's up?"

He froze, staring at Russell. "Damn, sleeping like that? This guy is begging for it."

Joakim, focused on the job, pushed him back. "Watch the entrance. If the girl shows up, grab her."

But his hands started to roam over Russell, who thrashed wildly. Joakim smacked him hard in the butt. "Stay still! Naked like that, you're practically asking for it."

Just then, Russell's phone pinged with a message from Frida.

[Where are you? I'm near the tent but can't find you.]

I took a deep breath and typed back: [Inside the tent. They haven't shown up yet. Come in.]

The trap was set, waiting for the star of the show. I'd show no mercy to anyone trying to harm me.

Frida didn't suspect a thing, assuming Russell had left the tent open for her. Joakim heard her footsteps and switched off the flashlight, both men waiting in silence.

"Russell, why didn't you come out and meet me? I'm beat," she complained. "Those idiots are late. Can't even do a job right. Where are we going after..."

I thought that after his treatment, Russell would face legal consequences. But he found me again in a quiet alley, holding Frida hostage with a knife pressed to her throat. Blood trickled down.He looked crazed, with matted hair and bloodshot eyes. He muttered to himself. "I had a dream. You were the one ruined, hated by everyone. I saved you, and they called me a hero. Frida became my girlfriend. I climbed the ranks, married her, and took her company. Everything was perfect. You stole it from me!"My skin prickled with fear, but I kept my voice calm. "Russell, drop the knife."He pressed harder, his gaze darting between us. "You two ruined my life. You both deserve to die!""You're insane!" Frida snapped. "Don't drag me into your mess. Go after her!"I could feel my temples pounding, knowing he could snap and kill her. If that happened, I would be next. So, I shifted gears. "I had that dream, too. It was real."His eyes widened. "What?""Let Frida go, and I'll explain," I sai

I left Russell's room and placed the remaining oranges by Frida's bedside.Too weak to move, she glared at me with equal hatred. "Proud of yourself? Watching me suffer while you're untouched?"I shook my head. "I'm not here to rub it in. Those reporters in Russell's room were sent by you, right? Think he won't come after you?""Him? After me?" she scoffed. "You're fine, and he's got nothing left.""It's the desperate ones you have to watch out for," I said. "I didn't do anything. You hired those thugs and reporters to bury him. Think he'll let that slide?"She fell silent, but my work was done. I walked out, knowing they'd destroy each other.Online, Frida leaked Russell's hospital outburst and the tent video, sparking a firestorm. In my past life, she'd done the same to me. Russell's hospital room was stark and silent. His eyes blazed with fury when he saw me, but his damaged throat managed only a rasp. "You bitch, you did this!"I sat by his bed, set two oranges on the nightstand, and peeled one. "What are you talking about? I saved your life. You should be thanking me."He writhed, sweeping the orange off. "If it weren't for you, I wouldn't have ended up like this. You ran off on purpose!"I tilted my head, playing dumb. "I had no idea someone was after me. But you—care to explain why you cheated with Frida and set me up? The police told me you hired those men to hurt me."His voice dripped with venom. "So what? You're always buried in books. Hanging out with you embarrasses me. I told you to get a job, but you chose graduate school. Did you think I'd support you forever? I was done with you. If you weren't pretty, I'd have dumped you ages ago."His words stung, revealing his true thoughts. I didn't know that was how he saw me.I leaned closer, w

Joakim didn't flinch. "We get paid tomorrow and vanish. Who is gonna care way out here? You're practically begging for it. Never seen a guy so eager."Russell's face twisted in horror. "It's not me. Lottie set me up!"Through the screen, I watched him scream, a dark satisfaction rising."Lottie, you played me! I'll end you!" he shouted, then turned to Joakim. "Let me go, or you'll pay!"Too bad, his threat couldn't intimidate Joakim, a desperado who took kidnapping jobs for fun. Joakim only pushed further, torturing him even more brutally.Russell's curses turned to desperate sobs. "No, get away! Please, stop!"I shielded the screen. It was too graphic.Joakim untied Russell's legs for easier access, but Russell kicked him hard, enraging him."You're dead, boy!" Before Frida could finish, a figure burst from the tent, pinning her face down.Thinking it was Russell, she giggled. "Ugh, the ground's filthy, babe. Take it easy."Michael tore at her clothes without a word. Assuming it was a game, she purred, "You're getting me all worked up."When he bound her hands, panic set in. "Why tie me up? It hurts. Russell, stop!""Tight ropes make it more fun, don't they?" Michael sneered. "Explains why we are hired. That pretty boy can't satisfy you."Frida's face drained of color. "You're not Russell! Let me go!"He flipped her over, grinning wickedly. "Kiss me. You'll be hooked."She screamed, kicking wildly, which irritated the man. He slapped her hard. "We're paid for this job, sweetheart. Be good, and I'll make it quick."Realizing it was a mistake, she shouted, "You've got the wrong person! I'm the one who hired you!"He laughed, baring his yellow teeth. "Sure, and I'm your master. Come here, darling.""Russell, help!" Frida cried, insisti
