Chapter 1

Dressed in a flowing white sundress, Alexandria Clarke looked around the dorm room with a timid, fragile expression.

"I was bullied in high school because I was pretty, and it left me with severe depression," she said softly. "My therapist says I'm a highly sensitive person, so I sometimes overthink things. I just hope you guys can be patient with me."

"Alexandria, don't be scared," Becky Layne immediately reassured her. "We're family now."

Christine Paine, the unofficial leader of our dorm, nodded enthusiastically.

"Exactly! We've all come from different states, and it's fate that brought us together. If anyone tries to bully you, they'll have to get through us first."

I leaned against the doorframe without saying a word.

In my previous life, I'd fallen for Alexandria's act, too. I'd treated her like a genuine friend and bent over backward to accommodate her.

Whenever she spiraled into negativity in the middle of the night, I'd stay up talking her through it until three in the morning.

Whenever she complained about being left out, I'd accompany her everywhere. I'd bring her meals from the dining hall, save her seats in lecture halls, and like and leave comforting comments on every one of her Instagram posts.

I genuinely thought I was helping someone who was ill. It took me far too long to realize that some people simply had no conscience.

At the freshman orientation mixer, Alexandria burst into hysterical tears, accused me of bullying her and tearing her dress to shreds.

She posted pictures of her slashed wrists all over social media, blowing up the entire campus.

Reddit, X, and our freshman GroupMe were flooded with posts attacking me. I tried to defend myself until my voice went hoarse, but no one believed a word I said.

The dean of students forced me to withdraw from school. My parents called to demand that I admit my wrongdoing and stop bringing shame to the family.

I was expelled, torn apart by online abuse, and condemned by everyone around me.

Eventually, I developed real depression. It wasn't until the day I swallowed that entire bottle of sleeping pills that I stumbled across the Reddit thread.

That was when I learned the truth: Alexandria had never been depressed at all.

Her so-called sensitivity was just another weapon. The scar on her wrist was nothing more than a prop in her performance. And I was the scapegoat she'd chosen to climb her way to the top.

She'd built her success on the ruins of my life, becoming an influencer with a million followers before marrying into a wealthy family.

...

I squeezed my eyes shut, overwhelmed by the pain of my past life.

When I opened them again, I heard my own voice coming from my mouth. "You say you have depression. Do you have an actual diagnosis or a note from your doctor?"

Alexandria's fragile expression stiffened instantly. She quickly lowered her head, her voice barely above a whisper. "I do. I just left it at home. I didn't bring it to campus. Do you... not believe me?"

Christine frowned and shot me a disapproving look.

"Maggie, what is that supposed to mean?" she snapped. "She's already upset, and you're deliberately bringing up her trauma."

"Seriously?" Becky chimed in, glaring at me. "Who would joke about something as serious as depression?"

"Exactly," Christine echoed. "No one should use mental illness as a way to make a point."

I simply reached into my pocket and tapped my phone screen. The voice recorder had been running the entire time.

"I never said I didn't believe you," I replied coolly, keeping my eyes on Alexandria.

"I'm just saying that if you're ill, you should seek professional treatment. You can't expect the entire dorm to revolve around you."

"Never mind." She wiped her tears. "I'm just being too sensitive again. I'll try harder not to be a burden to everyone."

"Hey, don't say that." Christine quickly handed her a box of tissues. "Nobody thinks you're a burden."

"Yeah, just ignore her," Becky joined in. "She doesn't think before she speaks."

Watching the same disgusting scene unfold all over again, I couldn't help laughing. Then I picked up my duffel bag and tossed it onto the empty bed.

"Let's get one thing straight right now," I said evenly. "I'm a straightforward person. If you really have depression, I suggest you request a room transfer.

"Because if you stay in a room with me, I'm afraid you'll end up with a lot more to worry about than your so-called sensitivity."

The conference room fell deathly silent.Christine sat among the observers, her face pale. Becky kept her head down, not daring to look at me, while Tracy's eyes were red-rimmed."I never looked down on you because you were supposedly sick, and I never looked down on you because of your family background," I said as I stood."Then why did you tell me to request a room transfer on our very first day?" Alexandria cried."Because," I said, meeting her eyes, "what I can't stand isn't depression. It's the way you use other people's empathy as a stepping stone."You could have lived a perfectly good life, but instead, you chose to destroy someone else's reputation to get ahead. And in my past life, you drove me to my death, one step at a time."Alexandria was stunned. "I... I never tried to drive you to your death!""Didn't you?" I scoffed. "You made the entire campus believe I was a monster who bullied you. You pressured my parents into telling me to take the blame just to keep the p

After reading through the messages, I locked my phone.Marie asked if I wanted to post everything online right away, and I shook my head."Not yet. I want Alexandria to drop her mask herself, right in front of everyone."Having evidence wasn't enough. I wanted to see what card Alexandria would play next.By the time the video reached that point, the office had fallen completely silent.Tracy's face was deathly pale. When Becky was called in, she was trembling from head to toe."I... I didn't know Alexandria had shredded her own dress!" she stammered. "She just asked me to help her post online, saying Maggie was bullying her. I thought it was true."I stared at her. "So, you posted my photo all over the internet without checking a single fact, putting me at risk of being doxed?"Becky burst into tears. "I was wrong! I'm sorry!"Christine stood up. "I'd felt for a while that something wasn't right, but I never imagined she'd be this malicious.""You felt something was off?" I

The campus forum soon published a formal clarification as well. The fabricated text message screenshot had been verified as fake. Although the profile picture and username were real, Alexandria had created the conversation herself using an alternate account. The student forum released the full forensic verification report. The screenshot's timestamp, IP address, and device logs all matched Alexandria's secondary account. The comment section exploded once again.[They traced it back to her alt account? What does Alexandria have to say now?][And her mom came all the way to campus to cry. Like mother, like daughter.][We demand that the administration release the full disciplinary results!]...Steven sent me a message.[The administration has decided to initiate a formal Honor Council disciplinary hearing. We've also investigated Becky Layne's account. She helped Alexandria publish some of those posts.]I replied immediately.[I've already archived and documented all of Becky

My mother fell silent for a moment before letting out a heavy sigh."It's not that I don't believe you. I'm just afraid you can't win against them."I ended the call and went through every piece of evidence on my phone one more time. Every audio recording and screenshot had a clear timestamp.Just then, a message from Marie popped up.[Karen Oram sent me the files. We got Alexandria's private chat logs. Ready to check them out?]I took a deep breath and opened the file.It wasn't large, just a few hundred kilobytes, but every word inside had the potential to destroy Alexandria. My heart pounded as I stared at the screen. Now only one final step remained.Outside my window, the sky gradually brightened with the approaching dawn.It was time to close the net.I picked up my phone and began typing. Then I published all the evidence at once, leaving Alexandria no room to wriggle out of it.I included the complete, unedited footage from the second camera angle, the official veri

Tracy tried to protest, but one sharp look from Steven silenced her.Cecelia came over to me and lowered her voice. "I can issue an official verification statement regarding that document."I nodded. "I also need her authentic medical records."She gave me a reassuring look. "I'll see what I can do."I gathered the materials from the table and carefully packed them into my manila folder. These sheets of paper were worth more than a thousand tears.Tears would dry up, but evidence wouldn't disappear. As the hearing broke up, Alexandria brushed past me and leaned close to whisper in my ear, "You're going to regret this!"I stopped and turned to look at her.She added darkly, "You're not the only one who knows how to gather evidence."...Three days later, Alexandria's mother, Isabel Clarke, showed up on campus. She stood outside our dorm building and began wailing at the top of her lungs. "My daughter really does have depression!"Are you all trying to drive her to suicide? M

Backstage, Alexandria wiped away her tears and shot Becky a subtle look. That night, she texted me.[Maggie, you're not going to win.]I stared at the message and took a screenshot.[That's exactly what I was waiting to hear.]The screen showed that she was typing, but after a long wait, no reply came.I then sent messages to Professor Cecelia Fernsby from the Student Mental Health Center and Marie Yates, my senior in the journalism department.Around midnight, Marie finally texted back.[I checked the report. Something is off. Are you still up? I'll send you a side-by-side comparison.]I sat up in bed and stared at my screen, knowing the real show was coming.I sent a voice message to both of them."I want her to finish putting on this act in front of everyone.""Got it."...The hearing came the following day.The atmosphere was even more tense than during the rehearsal incident.Alexandria sat directly across from me, her eyes swollen from crying.
