Chapter 1

Author: Sleepless Salt
Seven months after my father, Lorenzo Caruso, died, the final toxicology report came back.

His regular medication had been slowly replaced with something else. The dose was small enough to slip past routine screening, but strong enough to slowly destroy a healthy heart.

The money trail led from a medical supply company to a casino, then through two shell companies before finally reaching an account controlled by the Falcones.

I stared at Roman's name. My mind went straight back to three months earlier.

Marietta had been sitting in my father's study wearing Roman's shirt, with the Caruso harbor dividend sheets spread across the desk.

I asked Roman how long it had been going on.

He only looked at me. "Does it matter now?"

That was when I realized the Falcones had already infiltrated the finances, warehouses, and docks after my father's death.

On paper, I was still the Caruso heir. In reality, I couldn't even leave the estate without my husband's permission.

The one thing that finally gave me a way out was an unregistered burner phone containing contact information for members of my father's old guard.

I only learned later that Elio Vieri had left it for me.

We had barely spoken to each other before that.

Less than twenty minutes after my car left the estate, two black sedans appeared behind us.

The first shot shattered the rear window. I knew Roman knew what I had discovered.

Before the car plunged down the hillside, I called Roman and asked, "Did you kill my father?"

Roman never gave me a straight answer. He only said quietly, "Arianna, you were never supposed to go this far."

That was enough.

The instant the car crashed through the guardrail, I thought of the selection ceremony seven years earlier.

Five candidates had stood in the hall that day.

The Falcones, the Vieris, and three other families with business interests in Leighton had each sent a young man.

Elio's presence drew frowns from several elders.

Two months before the ceremony, the family had formally acknowledged an illegitimate son they had denied for years. They gave him the Vieri name and the right to represent the family in public.

Anyone could see exactly what they were doing.

But Elio legally carried the Vieri name now, and my father had no grounds to throw him out.

Besides, nobody really believed I would choose him.

Not even me.

In my last life, I had walked straight to Roman.

This time, I opened my eyes to the same chandeliers blazing overhead.

My father was alive.

Roman stood across from me in a perfectly pressed suit, his hand already stretched toward me.

Someone laughed. "Could you at least pretend to be nervous?"

Roman laughed too. "Do I need to?"

I closed my hand around the obsidian ring and walked toward him.

His hand was already waiting for mine.

I walked right past it.

The laughter in the hall slowly died.

I kept walking until I reached the end of the line.

Elio stood there, dark-haired and pale, his left hand buried in his pocket. Even he seemed convinced he was only there because his family had ordered him to show up.

He did not look up until I stopped in front of him.

Not far away, someone muttered, "The Vieris actually had the nerve to send him."

Another man chuckled. "They only acknowledged him two months ago, didn't they? It's obvious what they're after."

Someone else glanced toward my father and quickly fell silent.

Nobody would openly challenge the Vieris at an event like this. Doing so would suggest the Carusos couldn't even control who was allowed into the selection. Worse, it could turn the ceremony into a feud between two families.

But their quiet laughter said enough.

Elio heard every word.

He straightened his back, as though he'd been hearing things like that his entire life.

I pulled his hand from his pocket, opened his palm, and placed the ring inside. "I choose Elio Vieri."

My father turned to look at me.

He did not stop me. He simply waited for an explanation.

I gave him a small nod.

He remained silent for a while before gesturing for the officiant to continue.

From that moment on, anyone who mocked Elio's birth in public would also be challenging the Carusos.

The smile finally disappeared from Roman's face.

"Arianna." His voice was still steady. "Are you sure about this?"

"I'm sure."

He glanced at Elio but didn't make a scene. Instead, he slowly lowered his hand.

But I knew him too well.

He wasn't thinking I'd stopped loving him.

He was trying to figure out what I'd discovered.

After the ceremony, Elio typed something on his phone and held it out to me. "Why me?"

I thought of the burner phone he'd left me in my last life. "Because when everyone else pretended not to see me, you helped me."

Elio's brow furrowed. He typed another line. "We have never met."

My fingertips froze over the screen.

In reality, he'd already been pushed out of the line of succession. He never came looking for me again.Marietta disappeared from Leighton society entirely.Elio stayed. My father made him start at the bottom, handling basic security and intelligence work.In three months, he shut down two leaks the Vieris had never detected and flagged several suspicious cargo manifests before the shipments cleared the Caruso docks. My father did not give him a fancy title just for show.He put Elio in charge of a small intelligence unit. His authority remained below mine, and every major transfer still required my signature.Elio never complained. He didn't need to take away my power to prove his own.No one

My father first brought in an old adviser respected by both families as a witness. Then he summoned Bruno Falcone, the head of the Falcone family, and Roman to the estate. Before the door closed, both families' bodyguards were ordered to wait in the outer hall. There was nothing on the table but evidence and ledgers. My father pushed the file across the table. "Your son poisoned me."Bruno turned a few pages, his expression darkening with each one.Casino cash. The doctor's statement. Anthony's ledger. The drug lot numbers. The port contracts.Any one of them could be explained away on its own. Together, they were impossible to dismiss as coincidence.Roman kept his expression calm. "Marietta handled many of my personal investments."My father said mildly, "So you're going to let her take the fall?"Roman did not answer.I finally understood how Marietta had found her way into my father's study so quickly in my last life. She was not just the other woman. She also managed the money Rom

For the next three days, we made no move against Roman. My father sealed away all his old medication, replaced his private doctor, and temporarily suspended Gino's authority.Once Marietta's phone reached the finance team, they finally uncovered the full money trail. The Falcone casino handled enormous amounts of cash every day. Some of it had been laundered through a catering company, then transferred to a shell company posing as a medical supplier before reaching Anthony's black-market pharmacy. The paperwork was almost spotless. The only problem was that some of the money could be traced back to Roman's personal investment account. And Marietta had personally approved the transfer.Roman sent a lawyer over with a short statement. "A personal investment doesn't mean I knew how the money was being used."My father read it and chuckled. "This kid is even more cunning than I was at his age.""Which is exactly why we can't rush."I set aside every photo on Marietta's phone that proved he

My father personally arranged the operation at the old docks. The docks were part of an abandoned freight yard. The outer perimeter belonged to a storage company that worked with the Carusos. We moved the night crew out ahead of time and closed two access roads using maintenance as an excuse.Rosa went into the warehouse as planned.Elio and I were in the second-floor office. Two guards held the stairs, and two more covered the exit into the container yard.Another car waited two blocks away with the backup men my father had stationed there. What I wanted was evidence, not a chance to prove who was tougher.Rosa's voice came through the earpiece first. "It's all here."Then came the sound of heels clicking against concrete.Marietta had come. She opened the box and glanced at the numbers. "Increase the dose a little in the next batch."Rosa asked the question we had rehearsed. "He's already passed out twice. Wouldn't more make it happen too fast?"Marietta answered flatly, "They can't

My father's blood work quickly confirmed that he was being poisoned in more than one way. The pills contained a slow-acting cardiotoxin, while his nightly wine had been laced with a sedative over an extended period.I pulled the last three months of night-shift rosters, liquor delivery logs, prescription changes, and casino transactions and went through everything.Carlo was the first to fall.He had adjusted my father's prescriptions for Roman. Whenever my father felt sick, he dismissed it as a normal side effect.Gino never put anything in the wine himself, but he knew what was happening and kept quiet. His nephew was being paid an absurd salary by a Falcone casino. Gino knew someone in the house was tampering with my father's food and medicine, yet chose to see nothing.Last was Rosa, who handled my father's wine at night.Marietta had used her son's casino debts to force Rosa to spike the wine every night.Rosa sank to her knees, sobbing. "Ms. Caruso, I never wanted to hurt him."I

Anthony was not at the repair shop. His younger brother, Daniel Cole, was there, packing. The moment he saw Elio, the color drained from his face. "How did you find this place?"I put the photo of the drug lot numbers on the table. "Did your brother handle these?"Daniel did not answer. He kept glancing at the door. "Anthony told me last night to skip town.""Why?""Because somebody started cleaning house."He swallowed. "He said if I wasn't gone by today, I'd disappear just like he did."I was about to ask more when Elio suddenly raised a hand.A car had stopped outside. It was not one of ours. The back door of the shop swung open, and my hand went straight to my gun.Two men came in. One of them saw me and froze. They hadn't expected me to be here.Daniel had been their target all along. One of them swore under his breath and started backing toward the door.He did not want to open fire on me in a place like this.Anyone in their line of work knew there was a huge difference between
