Chapter 4

Author: Claremont Quinn
The page loaded. The next second, I froze as if I'd been struck by lightning.

Two words were clearly displayed in the first-choice field: Lintdon University.

The vocational college that had appeared there was gone.

"Miss." The two officers exchanged a glance, and their tone changed. "Look. Your first choice is Lintdon University. It hasn't been tampered with."

I shot to my feet. "That's impossible!"

The chair scraped across the floor with a piercing screech.

"I clearly saw the vocational college at home just now! I didn't change anything on the way to the police station. I came here specifically to preserve the evidence!"

I frantically refreshed the page.

Once. Twice. Ten times...

Lintdon University remained unchanged.

One of the officers sighed and softened his voice as if he were trying to calm a hysterical child. "Are you under too much pressure from your SAT exams? Could you be hallucinating? You did so well. Don't push yourself too hard."

"I wasn't hallucinating!" I was practically screaming. "It really was the vocational college just now! Someone changed it again in the ten or so minutes it took me to get here! This person can change my application whenever they want!"

I suddenly looked up and clutched at my last shred of hope. "Check the IP address! Officer, have someone from your technical department check the login IP! You'll know who changed my application as soon as you find it!"

The two officers exchanged another glance.

One of them picked up the phone and spoke quietly for a few moments.

About ten minutes later, the phone rang.

I watched the officer's expression intently.

When he hung up, the way he looked at me had changed.

The helplessness in his eyes had given way to something more complicated.

"The technical department checked it," he said after a pause. "The IP address used for the most recent change to your application... was your home."

His words hit me like a bucket of ice water.

"That's impossible!" I practically shouted. "I didn't change it!"

The officer's voice was already tinged with exhaustion. "Miss, are you sure you're remembering correctly? Or... have you been feeling unwell lately?"

"No, I haven't. I really haven't. Please check again. Someone has to be changing my application!"

I kept repeating the same words.

But they only looked at me with pity, as though I were someone who had been driven to a breakdown by academic pressure.

Then they began speaking quietly among themselves.

Not long after, the door to the interview room opened.

The moment my parents walked in, I hurried over and grabbed them. "Mom, Dad, you have to believe me. Someone really is changing my application. They've been watching me!

"We have to find them as soon as possible. Otherwise, I'll end up at a vocational college just like in my previous life, and you'll both die trying to get justice for me!"

I frantically told them everything that had happened in my previous life, hoping they'd believe me.

But their eyes immediately reddened.

My mother rushed over and wrapped her arms around me, sobbing uncontrollably. "What previous life? What vocational college? Naomi, what's happened to you?

"Don't scare me. Are you just too exhausted from studying? We don't have to rush. Let's go see a doctor, okay?"

"I'm not sick!" I pushed her away. I used too much force, and my forehead slammed hard against the corner of the table.

A dull pain shot through my head, followed by warm blood streaming from the wound.

But I acted as though I couldn't feel it and repeated the same words over and over. "Mom, Dad, you have to believe me...

"Someone really is changing my application. They've been watching me. They can erase everything before I even realize what's happening."

This wasn't an ordinary case of someone tampering with a college application.

They could monitor everything I did in real time. They could bypass every password at will. They could alter my application at the exact moment I made each move.

They were somewhere I couldn't see, watching me relentlessly.

Blood trickled from my forehead to the corner of my eye.

In that split second, I suddenly understood everything. "I know who's been changing my application..."

My father was formally arrested and charged with tampering with a student's SAT college preferences. The last time I saw Megan was when I returned to the police station to give a supplementary statement. She sat in a chair in the hallway. She wasn't crying or making a scene. She simply stared at the floor, almost lifeless. She had lost a lot of weight. Her cheekbones protruded, and her chin looked sharp enough to have been carved with a knife. When I approached, she looked up at me.Her face bore some resemblance to mine, but she looked so haggard that she seemed to have aged ten years."You won," she said."This wasn't a competition," I replied. She smiled faintly. "You know, I've known about you since I was little. My mom always told me about the daughter in your dad's family who had everything."Your dad bought you the best school supplies, took you to science museums, and went to your parent-teacher meetings. She told me I had to surpass you, be better than you, and crush

"Have I ever called Megan my daughter, even once, in all these years? When it's her birthday, I'm here with you. When she's sick, all I can do is listen to her over the phone."When she has a parent-teacher meeting, Michelle has to go alone. Whenever anyone asks where her father is, she has to say she doesn't have one!"Do you know the look on Michelle's face every time she told me these things?"My father stared at me, his eyes red. But it wasn't from guilt. He looked like the one who had been wronged."She's never caused a scene. Not once. The less she complained, the worse I felt. After all these years, how was I supposed to repay everything I owed her?"Naomi, I've been by your side for 18 years. I drove you to and from school, helped you with your homework, and went to your parent-teacher meetings."And you? You scored over 1500 on the SAT. You're going to Lintdon. You have your whole future ahead of you. But Megan has nothing. She can't even acknowledge her own father."Hi

I looked at my father. "You knew I'd come to the police station, so you immediately went in and changed Lintdon back, erasing every trace. You know how to code."Did you really think I wouldn't recognize the software installed on the computer in your study? You used to lock yourself in there until midnight. I thought you were working overtime. Now that I think about it, you were practicing how to ruin your own daughter's life without leaving a trace."My father's pupils suddenly contracted. I knew I was right."You knew the police wouldn't believe me. You thought everyone would assume I'd gone crazy from the pressure and started hallucinating." I let out a small laugh. "You calculated everything perfectly. Just now, even I almost believed I was crazy."No one said a word. The officers nearby looked grim. The younger one kept a hand on his radio, while the older officer rapidly scribbled notes in his notebook. My mother suddenly lifted her head from my arms. Tears blurred her eyes

"But I remembered the outline of that girl's face," I said.My mother's voice sounded as though it had risen from somewhere deep underground. "What happened after that?""The more I thought about it, the stranger it seemed. I didn't get a good look at her face, but I remembered the outline of it and the feeling she gave me. It was familiar." I took a deep breath. "She looked a lot like someone. The moment I hit my head today, everything suddenly clicked into place."I looked into my father's eyes, the eyes I'd known for as long as I could remember. The eyes that had watched me walk into school, beamed with pride at my accomplishments, and shone with joy as he spun me around in his arms the night my SAT scores came out."My classmate, Megan Foster. The Megan who scored one point below me on the SAT exams."My mother went completely still. It was as though someone had struck her. Her eyes went unfocused for a full three seconds before slowly sharpening again."She looks like me,

Blood streamed down my forehead, but I smiled. "I know who changed my college application."My mother cried even harder. My father stepped forward and tried to pull me away. "Stop talking nonsense. Let's get you to the hospital and have that wound bandaged first...""Dad." I looked him straight in the eyes and enunciated every word. "The person who changed my application was you."His hand froze in midair. The entire interview room fell silent. Even the faint sound of breathing became clearly audible."Naomi, you hit your head. What are you talking about?" My father raised his voice. "All that nonsense you were saying about a previous life and a car accident? You must've imagined it after hitting your head! Come to the hospital with me first!""Then how do you explain this?" I cut him off. "The IP address was traced to our house. The police checked it. The most recent change to my application was made from our home."My mother suddenly looked up and stared at my father through
