Chapter 2

Author: Noontide
I had given specific instructions to the chef to tailor tonight’s dinner to Anna’s preferences.

Upon entering the manor, I was met by a maid who informed me that Alessandro had already started dinner.

I glanced at the time and noted that dinner began an hour earlier than usual.

“Amora, you’ve got to try the foie gras. It is exceptional.”

My gaze swept past their half-eaten plates. “Dinner seems early today.”

“It’s the doctor’s orders. Anna needs to have her dinners at six, so we’re moving the time up.”

As I nodded, the pungent smell of foie gras made me sick to my stomach.

The maid served me a plate of steak. Fighting back the urge to throw up, I held my cutlery to begin dining.

Sitting across from me, Anna put down her cutlery and stared intently at my steak.

“Is there more of this steak? I’m craving one.”

“My apologies, ma’am, but that was the last steak. We do have more foie gras. Would you like some?” The maid replied tenderly.

This was something I had the chef prepare and reserved for me today.

Furrowing her brows, Anna rubbed her belly. “Amora’s steak is tempting me. I bet my baby is hungry for it.”

Alessandro looked at my plate. “Amora, let her have your steak. You can have the foie gras.”

I pursed my lips. “But I—”

Before I could finish my sentence, Alessandro reached out and grabbed the plate from me.

Anna speared a piece of meat and smiled sweetly at me.

“Thank you, Amora. The baby loves it.’

When the maid set a plate of foie gras down in front of me, the rich smell of the pâté hit me, and I couldn’t help but retch.

Under their stunned gaze, I made a mad dash to the bathroom and threw my guts up into the toilet, my hands clinging to the bowl.

It was a while before Alessandro returned to our bedroom and found me reading a book in bed.

Sitting by the bed, he spoke critically, “Amora, there you are again with your temper. Are you refusing dinner out of spite?”

Bitterness washed over me. In the past, Alessandro would hold my hand the entire night when I doubled over from menstrual cramps.

Now, he didn’t even care enough to ask why I had thrown up.

I answered dismissively, “I wasn’t hungry. We used to have dinner later.”

With his muscles relaxing, Alessandro took my hand. His eyes lit up when a thought struck him.

“I’m putting together a blessing for Anna in a couple of days, where the priest will bless the baby, and I’ll be named the child’s godfather.”

Despite convincing myself not to care about Alessandro’s favoritism toward Anna, I couldn’t stop my heart from breaking.

Our wedding anniversary was also coming up.

On every previous anniversary, Alessandro would plan a surprise ahead of time and celebrate the day with me.

This year, the celebration slipped his mind.

“Alright. I’ll organize it.” I nodded and volunteered to help. “I'll plan everything exactly the way she likes it.”

Alessandro paused for a minute, a complex of emotions fleeting across his eyes.

In the past, we had fought many times over Anna. Yet now, I was even willing to hold a blessing or her, something Alessandro could not get used to.

Shrouded in hesitation, Alessandro seemed to have something on his mind. Eventually, he simply nodded and added, “Just do as you see fit. Keep it simple, as the pregnancy has been hard on her. Safety first.”

“Sure,” I responded, keeping all my grievances locked up inside.

With a tender look on his face, Alessandro tried to pull me into his arms.

I pushed him away.

“You should check on Anna. It’s difficult for her to get around, so she could use the help.”

Alessandro pulled a long face.

“Aren’t you worried about me getting too close to her?”

I shook my head.

“She’s your late brother’s widow. It’s only right for you to treat her right. She only has you to lean on now that Lorenzo is gone, right?”

I would not stand in their way again.

With tension easing along his facial lines, Alessandro held me gently.

“What’s the matter? Before, you’d be acting up by now.”

I didn’t make a sound.

He met my eyes tenderly, his lips curling.

“You’re finally being reasonable, Amora. Anna’s pregnant, and she needs us more than ever. It’s time to drop the petty jealousy.”

‘You have a point, Alessandro. I won’t ever get mad at you again.

The Amora who got jealous, made a scene, and loved you to bits is long gone.’

  • Reborn to Walk Away   Chapter 10

Alessandro didn’t return to New York. He settled in Chicago and became a constant presence in my life.Sometimes, Alessandro would wait at the campus gates. Other times, he showed up outside my apartment building. He wasn’t as aggressive as before, no longer whispering those sweet nothings. Instead, he stood afar, staring at me with a sad, longing face, like a child waiting for a word of forgiveness. However, my heart was already closed off. In my previous life, I had shed every last tear in that relationship, dying in what should have been my best years. This time around, I would never turn back. Marco had been quietly keeping by my side. Since that night, he hadn’t pushed me for an answer. He would show up in my time of need and disappear when I needed space. On rainy days, he brought an umbrella. Before exams, he waited outside the library with coffee. During late-night cram studies, he would drive over to pick me up without a word. It wasn’t some grand, dramatic

  • Reborn to Walk Away   Chapter 9

[Amora’s point of view]The sunset painted the school campus golden. I walked out of the academic building to find Alessandro at the bottom of the steps. When my gaze fell on the familiar silhouette, the agony of the past crept back into me. I wore a plain black dress, my hair draped over my shoulders. I exited the building, cradling books against my chest. Next to me was a man. The man, tall and lean, wore a navy-blue suit. He carried my bag while leaning over to murmur something to me. He was Marco of the Chicago De Luca family. Marco was in my class. He often took time out of his day to help me with the more difficult coursework and partnered with me on group assignments.I looked up at him with a smile. Alessandro hadn’t seen that genuinely radiant and relaxed smile on me for a long time. It felt as if he had been punched in the gut. He took strides over and came in my way. “Amora.” The moment I lifted my chin and saw him, the smile on my face vanished.

Once Anna was taken away, I stood in the living room. The silence was eerily deafening. Where should I even begin to look for Amora? Amora was an orphan. She had nowhere to go and no family to lean on. Where could she possibly have gone outside New York? I looked around, not recognizing my home for the first time. The carpets had all been replaced with beige. Anna said the darker tones were too oppressive, so Amora had them swapped out.I painted the oil canvas hanging on the wall, and that was Amora’s favorite. Somehow, it was removed and replaced by a tacky landscape painting. Even the Italian vintage chandelier she had once carefully chosen after much deliberation had been swapped for Anna’s preferred crystal tassel design. I had been oblivious to the changes. Every trace of Amora in this home had been erased little by little, and I hadn’t noticed a single thing. Instead, Anna’s preferences were put in place. She acted like she owned the manor. I used to take pr

Anna put her hand over her face, her eyes reflecting disbelief. She probably could never figure out why I, who had been nothing but nice, would snap at her. “Why did you hurt Amora?” My eyes fixed on her as I hissed through clenched teeth, “No wonder the hospital check-up took five hours, but they couldn’t find a single thing wrong with you. You kept crying about the pain I grabbed her by the throat and tightened my grip bit by bit. “You did it on purpose, all to keep me from finding out that Amora was hurt.” Anna put up a fight, thrashing her limbs as tears and snot covered her face. Before she lost all her strength and went limp completely, I hurled her to the sofa. She slumped there, hacking her throat until she finally got air in her lungs again. Anna scrambled over to my feet, her face streaked with tears and mucus. “I was wrong, Alessandro… Please have mercy… If not for the baby. This is Lorenzo’s flesh and blood…” I looked down at her, my face showing no emot

Even after a month-long search, I was nowhere close to uncovering Amora’s whereabouts. I combed through every piece of surveillance footage, and the scale of my search eventually alerted the hospital’s medical team. After much hesitation, one doctor eventually spoke up, “Don Colombo, it might not be my place to say this, but that lover of yours is no saint. It’s one thing to fool around with her, but don’t let her wrap you around her little finger.” I frowned. “What do you mean? Anna is my late brother’s widow. Amora is my only wife.” The doctor looked at me as if I were some moron. “All of New York knows what’s up. No one actually buys the story that she’s your sister-in-law. Besides, it didn’t look like nothing was going on between you two when you came for an examination.” My heart sank. Not talking back for once, I took the medical charts from him. “When Amora arrived at the hospital, both her arms were covered in broken glass shards, but the doctors were occupied with

[Alessandro’s point of view]A certificate of divorce… I stared blankly at the document in my hand, my fingers trembling. “Decree of Divorce” was printed in bold on the cover. The court’s official stamp burned my eyes. The date of dissolution was today. Gritting my teeth, I growled, “What are you playing at, Amora?” I stormed up the stairs and flung the door to the bedroom open, only to be struck paralyzed. Everything of hers was gone from the room. The vanity table was pristine, bare of the essentials. The wardrobe was mostly empty with a few hangers left askew. Her toiletries were nowhere to be found in the bathroom, leaving mine sitting alone on the shelf. I thought I was seeing things. After confirming it over and over, I was forced to accept the reality. Racking my brain frantically, I tried to recall the time I signed the divorce papers. “H-How could she?” I murmured under my breath, feeling like a piece of my heart had been ripped away. I fished out m
