Chapter 9

Autor: Noontide
[Amora’s point of view]

The sunset painted the school campus golden.

I walked out of the academic building to find Alessandro at the bottom of the steps.

When my gaze fell on the familiar silhouette, the agony of the past crept back into me.

I wore a plain black dress, my hair draped over my shoulders. I exited the building, cradling books against my chest.

Next to me was a man.

The man, tall and lean, wore a navy-blue suit. He carried my bag while leaning over to murmur something to

Alessandro didn’t return to New York. He settled in Chicago and became a constant presence in my life.Sometimes, Alessandro would wait at the campus gates. Other times, he showed up outside my apartment building. He wasn’t as aggressive as before, no longer whispering those sweet nothings. Instead, he stood afar, staring at me with a sad, longing face, like a child waiting for a word of forgiveness. However, my heart was already closed off. In my previous life, I had shed every last tear in that relationship, dying in what should have been my best years. This time around, I would never turn back. Marco had been quietly keeping by my side. Since that night, he hadn’t pushed me for an answer. He would show up in my time of need and disappear when I needed space. On rainy days, he brought an umbrella. Before exams, he waited outside the library with coffee. During late-night cram studies, he would drive over to pick me up without a word. It wasn’t some grand, dramatic

[Amora’s point of view]The sunset painted the school campus golden. He carried my bag while leaning over to murmur something to me. He was Marco of the Chicago De Luca family. Marco was in my class. He often took time out of his day to help me with the more difficult coursework and partnered with me on group assignments.I looked up at him with a smile. Alessandro hadn’t seen that genuinely radiant and relaxed smile on me for a long time. It felt as if he had been punched in the gut. He took strides over and came in my way. “Amora.” The moment I lifted my chin and saw him, the smile on my face vanished.

  • Reborn to Walk Away   Chapter 8

Once Anna was taken away, I stood in the living room. The silence was eerily deafening. Where should I even begin to look for Amora? Amora was an orphan. She had nowhere to go and no family to lean on. Where could she possibly have gone outside New York? I looked around, not recognizing my home for the first time. The carpets had all been replaced with beige. Anna said the darker tones were too oppressive, so Amora had them swapped out.I painted the oil canvas hanging on the wall, and that was Amora’s favorite. Somehow, it was removed and replaced by a tacky landscape painting. Even the Italian vintage chandelier she had once carefully chosen after much deliberation had been swapped for Anna’s preferred crystal tassel design. I had been oblivious to the changes. Every trace of Amora in this home had been erased little by little, and I hadn’t noticed a single thing. Instead, Anna’s preferences were put in place. She acted like she owned the manor. I used to take pr

Anna put her hand over her face, her eyes reflecting disbelief. She probably could never figure out why I, who had been nothing but nice, would snap at her. “Why did you hurt Amora?” My eyes fixed on her as I hissed through clenched teeth, “No wonder the hospital check-up took five hours, but they couldn’t find a single thing wrong with you. You kept crying about the pain I grabbed her by the throat and tightened my grip bit by bit. “You did it on purpose, all to keep me from finding out that Amora was hurt.” Anna put up a fight, thrashing her limbs as tears and snot covered her face. Before she lost all her strength and went limp completely, I hurled her to the sofa. She slumped there, hacking her throat until she finally got air in her lungs again. Anna scrambled over to my feet, her face streaked with tears and mucus. “I was wrong, Alessandro… Please have mercy… If not for the baby. This is Lorenzo’s flesh and blood…” I looked down at her, my face showing no emot

Even after a month-long search, I was nowhere close to uncovering Amora’s whereabouts. I combed through every piece of surveillance footage, and the scale of my search eventually alerted the hospital’s medical team. After much hesitation, one doctor eventually spoke up, “Don Colombo, it might not be my place to say this, but that lover of yours is no saint. It’s one thing to fool around with her, but don’t let her wrap you around her little finger.” I frowned. “What do you mean? Anna is my late brother’s widow. Amora is my only wife.” The doctor looked at me as if I were some moron. “All of New York knows what’s up. No one actually buys the story that she’s your sister-in-law. Besides, it didn’t look like nothing was going on between you two when you came for an examination.” My heart sank. Not talking back for once, I took the medical charts from him. “When Amora arrived at the hospital, both her arms were covered in broken glass shards, but the doctors were occupied with

  • Reborn to Walk Away   Chapter 5

[Alessandro’s point of view]A certificate of divorce… I stared blankly at the document in my hand, my fingers trembling. “Decree of Divorce” was printed in bold on the cover. The court’s official stamp burned my eyes. The date of dissolution was today. Gritting my teeth, I growled, “What are you playing at, Amora?” I stormed up the stairs and flung the door to the bedroom open, only to be struck paralyzed. Everything of hers was gone from the room. The vanity table was pristine, bare of the essentials. The wardrobe was mostly empty with a few hangers left askew. Her toiletries were nowhere to be found in the bathroom, leaving mine sitting alone on the shelf. I thought I was seeing things. After confirming it over and over, I was forced to accept the reality. Racking my brain frantically, I tried to recall the time I signed the divorce papers. “H-How could she?” I murmured under my breath, feeling like a piece of my heart had been ripped away. I fished out m
