Chapter 2

Author: Perfect Timing
That evening, just as I lay down on my bed, I received a call from my boyfriend, Jarred Russo.

He said to me without mercy, "Let's break up, Miranda. I'm tired of this. Don't come bothering me anymore."

I listened to his voice expressionlessly. After he finished speaking, I could faintly hear a woman's soft laughter in the background.

Although I knew whose voice it was, I still pretended to be shocked. "Are you cheating on me? Who are you with right now? Jarred, you can't do this to me."

The angrier I sounded, the more amused he seemed.

"I'll be honest with you. I was only with you because you could get me a referral to your company. Now that I've achieved my goal, I don't want to force myself to stay with you anymore."

So that was it. Because my resume was quite impressive, I was hired by a major company right after graduating from college. Later, after I established myself at the company, I helped both Jarred and Kate get hired through internal referrals.

"Stop pestering us, Miranda. We're going to be rich soon. We won't be in the same class as you anymore.

"Our circles are different, so why force yourself to fit in? Let's just leave it at that."

Kate had taken the phone and spoke to me.

"You two? You actually betrayed me!" I gasped, sounding completely shocked.

This made both of them burst into laughter.

I took the opportunity to say, "I'd like to see how well you two do without me. You just bought a crappy, old house. What's so great about that?"

"You'll find out soon enough. You're just an ordinary office worker. How could you ever compete with me?"

After hanging up, I let out a cold laugh. How utterly foolish. In this law-abiding society, if such a large sum of money really fell from the sky, could it escape the police's attention?

The next day, I went to work as usual and saw Kate and Jarred both go to the manager's office to resign. Faced with such sudden applications, our manager, Hank Johnson, was somewhat puzzled and tried to persuade them to stay, but Kate arrogantly refused.

"Sorry, Hank, but I just came into some money. It's not much, just a few million dollars, so working isn't necessary for me anymore."

Hank almost wondered if he had misheard, and the surrounding colleagues immediately gathered around.

"Kate, are you daydreaming? Where'd you even get that much money? Did you rob a bank?"

"Did you win the lottery? How did you pick the numbers? Is there a trick? Teach me!"

"You're joking, right? You're talking out of your ass. This is hilarious."

When she heard these flattering or opposing voices, Kate decided to show them what was happening. "How about this? Come to my new house in three days, and you'll see for yourselves."

She then directly sent the address to the work group chat. Upon seeing how determined she was, Hank couldn't say much more and approved both of their resignation applications.

While packing up, Kate noticed the branded bag on my desk and immediately exploded. "How can you afford that?"

After a few seconds, she realized something. "Oh, I get it now. You deliberately bought a fake to impress people, trying to outdo me.

"I suggest you give up. There's no need to pretend. A canvas bag worth a few dollars would suit you better."

I rolled my eyes and brought my bag right up to her face. "Open your damn eyes and look carefully. How could a fake have stitching this good?

"I just bought it from the boutique yesterday. Do you want me to show you the payment record?"

The old woman lost all ability to move and collapsed directly onto Kate. Kate pushed her away with disgust, preparing to leave, but then she saw me standing in the doorway."Miranda, can you help me by lending me some money? You've been pretty well-off lately, right? Please help me!"We're best friends! I'll definitely pay you back. Trust me, once I get through this rough patch, we'll be the best of friends again."I laughed out loud when I heard this. I couldn't believe she had the nerve to say something like that."Do you think I'm that easy to fool? I already died once in my previous life. I'm not stupid enough to trust you again."Kate's eyes widened as she stared at me. "Y-You came back too?""I died so horribly in my past life that even heaven couldn't stand it. They sent me back to collect what I was owed."Now, she looked at me as if I were a demon from hell. She muttered in shock, "Impossible. How could you be reborn too? You're lying to me. If you came back, why didn't

Upon seeing her home turned into ruins, the old woman nearly fainted on the spot."My house! My home! You little bitch, why are you destroying my house?"The old woman wanted to tear Kate apart, but Kate kicked her away."It's you! You took what was in the safe! Give it back to me! It was mine!"Kate had completely lost it by now. She was convinced the old woman had been living here, discovered the money, and hidden it for herself."What things? What safe? I don't know what you're talking about!"The old woman had no idea why Kate was going crazy. She had been squatting here not just out of stubbornness, but because she had no money and nowhere else to go. If she had taken that money, she would have moved out long ago instead of foolishly continuing to live here.Kate could have figured this out if she had thought about it for even a second, but where was the money then? She suddenly turned to me. "Miranda Stevens! Tell me, where's my money?"I threw up my hands. "This is your

We all walked inside together. The house still showed traces of the old woman's life there.Kate walked to the living room and looked up at the ceiling. In my previous life, that was where I had discovered a safe.Jarred immediately brought over a stool for her to stand on. Kate tapped the surface with her hand and found it was indeed hollow, making her even more excited."It's hollow inside! The safe is in there. Get me a hammer!" she shouted.Everyone searched through the house and quickly handed over a large hammer. After just a few hits, the ceiling cracked open. Jarred couldn't wait any longer and climbed onto the stool to help smash it together."I can feel it! I can feel the safe!"Excited voices rang out as the two picked up their pace. Soon, the ceiling had a large hole, and the corner of a metal box was exposed. The two of them worked together to bring the safe down and carefully placed it on the ground. However, the safe had a combination lock. None of them knew the c

After calling the police, officers arrived quickly. When they saw the old woman, their expressions became somewhat serious."Why haven't you moved out yet? This house no longer belongs to you. What are you still doing here?"The police seemed to know who this old woman was and looked equally helpless.Kate quickly stepped forward and asked, "What's going on here, officers? Please arrest her."The officer sighed. "We arrested her before, but she keeps coming back."Only then did we learn that this old woman was the mother of the previous homeowner. Her son had killed his wife, and the court ordered their family to pay a large sum in compensation to the wife's family. But the old woman refused to pay no matter what, so the court seized the house."This is my son's house! I'm waiting here for my son to come home!" the old woman shouted, gripping the door frame with both hands. After learning the truth, everyone looked at the old woman with disgust. Kate was particularly harsh with

We all looked toward the doorway and saw an elderly woman standing inside, holding a rolling pin as a weapon. I quietly stepped back a few paces, afraid of getting caught in the crossfire.Kate was utterly stunned. She had paid full cash for this house, so how could someone still be living inside? She pulled out the property deed, compared the address several times to confirm this was the right place, then immediately flew into a rage."Lady, are you crazy? This house is mine. What are you doing in my house?" she screeched. The old woman started cursing at her. "You little bitch, this is my son's house! What do you mean by 'your house?' Are you trying to steal my son's house? Over my dead body!"Kate wouldn't give up and waved the property deed in her hand. "The deed is right here! What do you mean, this is your son's house? Get out of my house right now!"Jarred also stepped forward. "Old hag, get lost! This house has been transferred to Kate now. It's in black and white, so how

Kate, seeing that she failed to show off her wealth in front of me, ground her teeth. She quickly grabbed the sales associate's hand and pointed to a ruby set. "I want this one!"Jarred still had some concerns and tugged at her sleeve, lowering his voice. "500 thousand dollars? Isn't that a bit too expensive?"Kate was practically fuming at this point and insisted on getting it no matter what. She told the sales associate to wrap it up for payment. However, when they swiped several bank cards, all of them showed insufficient funds. In the end, the two of them nearly emptied their entire savings just to barely cover the payment.…Three days passed quickly. Kate had gathered enough money for the house. She went to Angela, completed the transfer, and got the keys to the property. When I saw that it was about time, I also headed to that residential complex. At this moment, our colleagues had all arrived. Everyone wanted to see how Kate planned to get rich.Soon Kate and Jarred arri
