Chapter 7 : The leverage he's been saving

Nora's POV

Damian Sterling looked exactly the way I remembered him from a lifetime I wasn't supposed to remember at all — relaxed in a chair that wasn't his, one leg crossed over the other, like he'd been waiting long enough to get comfortable.

"Theo," he said warmly, standing as we walked in. His eyes moved to me next, and something in them sharpened, just slightly, before smoothing back into pleasant familiarity. "And the new Mrs. Whitfield. I have to say, this morning's been full of surprises."

"You weren't invited to this office," Theo said.

"I didn't think I'd need an invitation." Damian's smile didn't waver. "Twenty years, Theo. I've never needed one before."

"Say what you came to say."

Damian glanced at me, then back at Theo, unhurried in a way that made my skin prickle. "I think we should speak privately."

"She stays," Theo said.

Something flickered behind Damian's expression — not quite surprise, more like recalibration, the same thing I'd caught on Ivy's face at the courthouse. I filed it away and said nothing, letting him decide how much he wanted to reveal in front of a witness.

"Very well." Damian sat back down, folding his hands. "I understand congratulations are in order. Though I confess I'm curious about the timing. Marrying your nephew's fiancée on the same morning she was meant to marry him — that's not the kind of decision a careful man makes on impulse. Which tells me you had reasons I'm not currently aware of."

"I don't answer to you for my decisions," Theo said.

"No," Damian agreed easily. "You don't. But you might want to consider how this looks to people who don't know you as well as I do. A sudden marriage. A convenient contract handing you control of a company that's been sitting dormant for years. Some might call that opportunistic."

"Some might call it justice," I said. "Depending on how much they know about why that company's been sitting dormant."

Damian's eyes moved to me fully for the first time since we'd walked in, and for one unguarded second I saw something underneath the pleasant mask — an old, careful attention, like a man recalculating an opponent he'd underestimated.

"I knew your mother," he said. "Helena was brilliant. Difficult, but brilliant. It's a shame what happened to that company after she passed."

"It's a shame what happened to a lot of things after she passed," I said.

The silence that followed lasted a beat too long. Damian recovered first, turning his attention back to Theo, voice dropping into something quieter, more deliberate.

"I came here as a friend," he said. "To advise you, the way I always have. This marriage, this claim she's making — it's going to draw attention to things that have stayed buried a long time. Old decisions. Old debts." His eyes held Theo's steadily. "I'd hate to see something come to light that neither of us wants revisited."

The room went very still. I watched Theo's jaw tighten, the first real crack I'd seen in his composure since I'd met him that morning.

"Is that a threat," Theo said, "or advice?"

"It's a reminder," Damian said, standing smoothly, buttoning his jacket like this had been nothing more than a pleasant check-in. "That some partnerships work best when everyone remembers what they owe each other." He paused at the door, glancing back at me one more time. "Congratulations again, Mrs. Whitfield. I do hope this marriage was built on something sturdier than revenge. Revenge has a way of costing more than people expect."

He left without waiting for a response.

Neither of us spoke for a long moment after the door clicked shut.

"He knows I told you something," I said finally. "About my mother's death. About what really happened to my family."

"He didn't say that."

"He didn't have to." I turned to face Theo fully. "He just told you, in front of me, that he's willing to use whatever he's holding over you to stop this. That's not a family friend checking in, Theo. That's a warning shot."

Theo was quiet, staring at the door Damian had just walked through, something working behind his expression that I couldn't fully read.

"The debt he's talking about," he said slowly, "isn't just money. If it comes out the way he could make it come out, it wouldn't just damage me. It would give the board grounds to remove me entirely."

"Then we need to know exactly what he has before he decides to use it."

Theo nodded, but I could see the calculation happening behind his eyes, the same one I'd been running myself since the courthouse — how much of this was still salvageable, and how much we'd already lost before either of us realized we were in a fight at all.

His phone buzzed on the desk. He glanced at it, and whatever color remained in his face drained further.

"It's Patricia," he said. "She says Damian just requested an emergency meeting with the full board for tomorrow morning."

"About what?"

Theo turned the screen toward me, and I read the message twice before the words fully landed.

I remembered trusting him because I had been desperate enough to believe that accepting his help would solve my problems.I had been wro

Nora POVIvy didn't stay for breakfast.By the time I looked toward the hallway again, she was gone.I didn't ask where she went. The old Nora would have. She would have followed her upstairs, knocked on her door, and asked if everything was alright. She would have worried about the look on Ivy's face and blamed herself for it.I didn't.I had learned something after dying.People rarely showed you the truth when you asked for it.They showed you when they thought you weren't watching. And Ivy had been watching me.So I watched her back.I found her in the sitting room an hour later. She was standing near the window with her phone in her hand. Her back was turned to me, and she looked completely still.Too still.I stopped in the doorway.“Ivy.”She turned quickly. For half a second, something flashed across her face.Fear.Then it disappeared.“Nora.”She smiled. It was the same smile she had used on me for years.Soft.Careful.Almost innocent.“How are you feeling after last night?

Nora POVThe Whitfield mansion felt different the morning after dinner.Or maybe I was the one who had changed.I stood in front of the mirror, fastening the buttons of my blouse while the memory of last night replayed in my head.Jude's face.Ivy's careful concern.Theo's voice when he had called me his wife.I had expected anger.I had expected questions. What I had not expected was silence. No one had knocked on my door. No one had come looking for another fight. Even the servants seemed more careful around me, as though they were waiting to see what kind of woman would walk out of my room. The old Nora would have been nervous. She would have wondered what everyone was saying about her.I didn't.I had spent too much of my first life worrying about what people thought.I opened the door.Theo was standing outside.I stopped. He looked at me for a moment before glancing toward the hallway.“Breakfast is downstairs.”“I can feed myself.”“I know.”“Then why are you here?”His express

Chapter 10: The First Family DinnerNora’s POVThe Whitfield mansion looked exactly the way I remembered it.Too grand.Too polished.Too full of people who smiled while deciding where to place the knife. The first time I had walked through these doors, I had been Jude’s fiancée.I had spent the entire evening trying to prove that I belonged.Tonight, I walked through them as Theo Whitfield’s wife. The difference was almost amusing.I adjusted the sleeve of my dress as Theo walked beside me. He had said very little since we left the office, but he had not once asked if I was nervous.Maybe he already knew I wasn't.Or perhaps he simply understood that I was no longer the woman they remembered. The doors opened before us.Conversation drifted from the dining room. Then stopped.Every head turned. For one brief second, nobody said anything.I could almost hear their thoughts. So that's her.She actually married Theo. What happened to Jude?I kept my expression calm.Theo's hand settled

  • Reborn to ruin the man who broke me    The boardroom

Theo's POVBy nine in the morning, every seat in the boardroom was occupied. That alone told me how seriously they were taking Damian's request. The long table was surrounded by men and women who had spent years learning how to smile while sharpening knives beneath the table. Some had served under my father. Others had been waiting for the day they could question my decisions without having to pretend they trusted me.Today, they didn't have to pretend.Nora sat beside me.Her posture was straight, her hands folded neatly in her lap.She looked calm.I knew better. The doors closed behind us.At the far end of the table, Damian sat with the same relaxed expression he'd worn in my office yesterday. As though none of this concerned him.I took my seat.Nora followed.Patricia stood at the head of the table with a folder in her hands."The purpose of this emergency meeting," she began, "is to review concerns raised regarding the legitimacy and circumstances surrounding the marriage betwe

POV: TheoThe board meeting was scheduled for nine in the morning.By eight thirty, I already knew it wasn't going to be about the marriage. Not entirely.Patricia had sent me the agenda before sunrise.Review of the Whitfield-Calloway marriage. The wording was almost insulting.A legal review would have been enough if they were actually concerned about the legitimacy of the marriage. But an emergency full-board meeting meant something else.Someone wanted a spectacle.Someone wanted me questioned in front of people who had spent years waiting for an opportunity to challenge me.I closed the message and looked across my office.Nora was standing by the window. She had been quiet since we left the room last night. Not frightened.Thinking.There was a difference."You're going to ask me something," I said. She turned."I've been trying to decide if I should.""That's usually when people ask."Her mouth twitched, but the expression disappeared quickly."Why does Damian know so much abou
