Chapter 3: The Highway Silencer

The cold metal of the handcuffs bit sharply into Elara’s wrists as the prison transport van rattled over the cracked asphalt of the mountain highway.

Outside the mesh-wire windows, heavy rain slammed against the glass, blurring the dark forest stretching out for miles. It had been less than twelve hours since the catastrophe at the summit. The legal proceedings had moved at a terrifying, unnatural speed—a puppet court orchestrated by Julian’s shadowy political contacts. Charged with corporate espionage, high treason, and grand theft of national defense assets, Elara was being transferred to a maximum-security facility before the press could even ask questions.

Elara sat on the narrow bench, her forehead resting against the cold wall. Her heart felt hollowed out.

Suddenly, the van swerved violently.

Tires screeched against wet pavement, followed by the deafening, metallic crash of a heavy impact. The transport skidded sideways, flipping onto its side with a sickening crunch. Elara was thrown across the interior, her head slamming against the steel partition. Pain exploded behind her eyes, and the metallic taste of blood filled her mouth.

Groaning, she blinked through the haze, her vision swimming. The driver and the guard in the front seat were unconscious, slumped over deployed airbags.

Rain poured in through the shattered windshield. Through the mud-spattered glass, Elara saw three dark SUVs idling in the storm, their headlights cutting through the deluge. Men in black tactical gear stepped out, rain slicking their heavy rifles.

Rescue? Elara thought, her breath hitching. Did someone realize I was framed?

The back doors of the transport van were ripped open with a crowbar. A tall man in a leather jacket stepped into the frame, wiping raindrops off a silenced pistol.

"Elara Vance?" the man asked in a flat, businesslike tone.

"Who... who sent you?" Elara choked out, clutching her bruised ribs as she tried to pull herself upright. "The board? The police?"

The gunman scoffed, pulling a satellite phone from his coat pocket and tapping a speed-dial button. He set it to speaker mode.

After two rings, a familiar, smooth voice filtered through the static.

"Is it done?" Julian asked.

Elara’s breath caught in her throat. "Julian...?"

A brief silence hung on the line, followed by a quiet, disdainful chuckle from her husband. "Ah. Still breathing, I see. You always were remarkably resilient, Elara."

"Why?" Elara wept, rain splashing onto her bruised face through the shattered doors. "You stole my code! You gave everything to Chloe! Why do you need to kill me?!"

"Because you're too smart, sweetheart," Julian replied casually, as if discussing the weekend weather. "Dead people don't file appeals. Dead people don't find backdoors in source code. And most importantly, a dead wife leaves her grieving husband as the sole legal beneficiary of her intellectual estate. Chloe and I are signing a multi-billion dollar defense contract tomorrow morning using Aether."

"She was always better for him anyway," Chloe’s voice purred softly in the background, close to the receiver. "Thanks for the code, dear sister. You really were a useful little workhorse."

"Julian... Chloe... I swear to God—" Elara gasped, tears mixing with the blood running down her temple.

"Goodbye, Elara," Julian said coldly. "End it."

Click.

The gunman lowered the phone, raising the silenced barrel directly toward Elara’s chest.

In that final fraction of a second, as the gunman's finger tightened on the trigger, a blinding surge of pure, unadulterated rage consumed Elara’s soul. Not fear. Not sorrow. Just an incendiary, absolute wrath.

If I get another chance... if there is any justice in this cruel universe... I will make you both crawl.

POP.

A flash of fire illuminated the dark van. Darkness swallowed Elara instantly as her world went dead silent.

SYSTEM BOOT: RE-COMPILING LIFE_DATA.EXE...

ERROR: TIMELINE OVERWRITTEN.

Elara gasped, bolting upright with a violent intake of air.

Her chest heaved. She frantically slapped her hand against her sternum—no blood, no bullet hole, no pain. Her hands were smooth, unbruised, and completely intact.

She looked around.

She wasn't in a wreckage. She wasn't in a ditch.

She was sitting at a glass desk in a bright, modern apartment flooded with morning sunlight. The smell of fresh coffee drifted through the air. On the desk sat a single monitor displaying a desktop wallpaper she hadn't seen in three years.

Elara looked down at her wrist. Her smartband glowed with a notification:

DATE: MARCH 14, 2023 | 08:30 AM

Three years ago.

She was back. Back to the exact month she had first started drafting the preliminary concepts for Project Aether. Back before she married Julian. Back before Chloe moved into her firm.

Elara stared at her reflection in the dark monitor screen. A slow, chilling smile spread across her face, her eyes gleaming with lethal intelligence and sharp, wicked anticipation.

"Well, well, well," Elara whispered, cracking her knuckles. "Time to rewrite the source code."

The National Tech Defense Expo was the grandest venue in the country, buzzing with cameras, high-ranking military officials, and international press.Backstage, Julian smoothed the lapels of his custom tuxedo, holding a glass of champagne. Next to him, Chloe was practically glowing in a emerald-green gown, her hair styled in effortless curls."I still can't believe how easy it was," Chloe whispered, her eyes dancing with greed as she looked at her tablet. "Elara actually thought she was making a cat app. She literally handed us a multi-billion dollar government contract on a silver platter!""She was always naive," Julian sneered softly, taking a sip of his drink. "She lacked vision. Today, we secure the defense tender, sign the exclusive licensing deal with the ministry, and solidify our positions as the new giants of tech. By the time she realizes what happened, we’ll be untouchable.""Next on stage," the master of ceremonies announced over the echoing speakers, "representing Sterli

If there was one person in the tech industry who struck fear into the hearts of corrupt executives, it was Alexander Vance—no relation to Elara, but a titan who dwarfed her entire firm.As the CEO of Apex Global Technologies, Alexander was a ruthless, brilliant venture capitalist known for two things: his unmatched defense technology empire and his absolute zero-tolerance policy for corporate deceit. In her past life, Alexander had attempted to acquire Project Aether after Elara’s arrest, only to abandon it when he realized the stolen code was compromised.Elara stood outside the sprawling, glass-clad tower of Apex Holdings, wearing a sharp tailored suit. She held a single black leather briefcase. She walked straight to the executive reception desk. The front desk secretary glanced up, offering a professional, albeit dismissive, smile. "May I help you?""I'm here to see Alexander Vance," Elara said calmly."Do you have an appointment, ma'am? Mr. Vance’s schedule is booked four months

Elara sat frozen in her ergonomic chair, staring at the glowing date on her smartband.MARCH 14, 2023.Three years. She had been thrown back three whole years into the past. She took a slow, deep breath, her eyes darting around her old apartment. It was clutter-free, bright, and completely devoid of Julian’s pretentious minimalist art. On her desk sat a half-empty mug of hazelnut coffee—still warm.A sudden electronic chime shattered the quiet. Her phone vibrated on the desk, displaying an incoming call:CALLING: JULIAN (SVP Operations Candidate)In her past life, seeing his name would have brought a blush to her cheeks. Now, looking at the caller ID made her lips curve into a cold, dangerous smile. She tapped the screen, answering with a voice so sweet it could give a person cavities. "Morning, Julian.""Hey, beautiful!" Julian’s voice bubbled with that effortless charm that had once blinded her. "I was just checking in. Her hands trembled slightly, not from fear, but from sheer exhaustion. She had slept less than three hours."Nervous?"Elara turned to see Julian walking up behind her. He wrapped his arms around her waist, pulling her into a gentle embrace and kissing her temple."A little," Elara admitted, offering a faint smile. The desk was littered with cold espresso shots, crumpled sticky notes, and three separate monitors glowing in the dark room. Her fingers flew across the mechanical keyboard, creating a rhythm that had been the background soundtrack of her life for six straight months. Her name was Elara Vance, and she was on the verge of breaking the world open. What she was building wasn't just another mobile application or a slick user interface. It was Project Aether—a revolutionary neural algorithm capable of predictive infrastructure management and real-time resource distribution. In plain terms? It was a software program that could eliminate power grid failures, optimize medical supply chains during disasters, and essentially secure the economic future of the entire nation. It was her magnum opus, born from countless sleepless nights, skipped meals, and an unrelenting obsession with perfection."Just one more deployment pipeline to verify," Elara muttered to herself, rubbing her bloodshot eyes.
