Chapter 7

Author: Perfect Timing
Tristan's eyes widened. He looked like someone had reached into his chest and grabbed his heart in an iron grip. He stared at the empty ring box, the strong column of his throat bobbing several times before he gritted out, "What did you say?"

"I said, I threw it away." I shoved my stuff into my purse and zipped it up loudly. "Just like what I did to those empty promises you made."

Lara suddenly screeched, "She's lying to you, Tris! She's just saying this to spite you!"

She tried to grab Tristan's arm, but he shook her off. Frost covered his eyes as he leveled a hard look at me. "Say that again, Genevieve."

"How many times do I have to repeat myself?" The corner of my mouth twitched into a smirk. "Are you trying to tell me the loss of that ring hurts you more than when you cheated on me?"

Tristan shot to his feet, the chair scraping against the floor with a piercing shriek. The other customers threw curious looks at him, but he was oblivious to them as he clenched his fists tightly

  • Receipts of Infidelity   Chapter 8

Someone went to the orphanage to look into Lara's records and discovered that she'd reached maturity a long time ago. Not only had she been faking her age, she'd also strung several men along simultaneously. When Tristan learned the truth, he hit his head on the wall in a maniacal fit until blood trickled down his forehead.I heard all this from Anna while we were en route to the courthouse to finalize the divorce. She sighed. "I guess no wicked deed goes unpunished."I stared out the car window at the passing scenery, a sudden hollowness gripping me. What I felt was not quite satisfaction, but it wasn't sadness, either. It simply felt like a five-year-long rain had finally stopped.I saw Tristan again at the courthouse entrance. He was dressed in prison attire and handcuffed, with two police officers escorting him to finalize the divorce. His hair had been cropped short, and his face was still covered in bruises that had yet to fade, accentuating his murky eyes.As he signed the

Three days later, Tristan reached out to me on his own accord and asked that we meet up at a cafe. His eyes were bloodshot, and his jaw and chin were gray with stubble. He looked drained."Let's talk, Gen." Tristan slid a card across the table toward me. "There's 500 thousand dollars in this card. It's yours for now. Can we circle back on the divorce at a later time?"I didn't touch the card. "How's Lara?"Tristan's eyes flickered. "She's fine, just a little emotional…""I think you mean pregnant." I raised the cup of coffee to my lips, my fingertips running cold for some reason. "Rowena found her prenatal check-up record from last week."Tristan's expression froze. He looked like he'd been punched hard in the face. A long pause later, he finally gritted out, "I know I hurt and betrayed you, Gen, but the child is innocent—""The child?" I laughed, tears nearly spilled down my cheeks. "And what about me? What about the last five years I spent married to you? "Tell me, Tristan. D

Tristan was summoned to the courthouse. When he got my phone call, he sounded annoyed as usual, but it wasn't until he saw Anna standing beside me that his expression darkened."Are you serious, Genevieve?" He clenched his fists so tightly that his knuckles turned white. The top two buttons of his police uniform were undone as if to allow him to breathe through his rage. "You're going to destroy me over something this trivial?"Before I could speak, a staccato of frantic footsteps rang out from behind me.Lara had tagged along without any of us noticing her. In her hand was a lunch box, and tears sprang to her eyes when she spotted us having a stand-off. "Tris, maybe I shouldn't be here…"Tristan immediately turned to wrap an arm around her shoulder, his tone softening. "This has nothing to do with you. Go stand by the side."His protective, loving gesture branded my heart like a third-degree burn. I pulled out the printed divorce papers from my purse and threw them on the marble

"Test you?" I watched as Tristan spun and left with another woman in his arms, my voice shaking with anger. "You were the one who tested me first! I never made you do anything, did I? Did I hold a gun to your head and force you to cheat on me or lie to me?"You should have known that I, Genevieve Hartman, was no pushover when you decided to crush my trust, love, and our five-year marriage under your boot! You're a police officer, Tristan, but that didn't seem to have stopped you from breaking the law you claim to uphold!"I grabbed him by the wrist. His wrist was bare; the red woven bracelet I had made for him was already gone. I demanded, "Where's my bracelet?"Tristan paused, and he squeezed out the words, "I lost it while I was on duty.""You lost it?" I stared into his eyes, enunciating, "Then what's that on Lara's wrist?"A grave look crossed Tristan's face. He opened his mouth to argue and explain, but in the end, words eluded him. He shook off my grip and walked away with

The compound at the precinct entrance was jam-packed with cars. I'd only just parked the car when I saw Tristan leaving through the doors, his tall and straight silhouette clad in the standard-issue police uniform. However, he looked grim. It was obvious he'd seen me, for his brows furrowed as he hurried over to my car. He opened the door and slid into the passenger seat. Rage colored his hushed tones as he hissed at me, "What the hell are you thinking, Genevieve? Must you make a big deal out of this?""Excuse me?" I leveled an icy look at him. "I simply want to know the truth, Tristan. What is going on between you and Lara?"He turned his face away, avoiding my gaze. "I told you, she's just an orphan I'm sponsoring.""And you've been sponsoring her hotel stays, too?" I sneered, "Do you take me for an idiot, Tristan?""Why are you so intent on making things hard for me, Genevieve?" He whipped his head around to glower at me viciously. At that moment, a slender figure appeared
