RAE

"Yes." But I wasn't. My head felt light and heavy at the same time, like I was floating and sinking all at once.

"I can't just sit down and pretend this didn't happen." I moved toward the door, my hand reaching for the handle. "I thought you would be able to help. But if you can't, I'll meet with the headmistress myself."

"I don't think that's a good idea." Cassian was on his feet now, moving around the desk toward me. "Rae, wait—"

But my vision was starting to swim. The edges of the room went fuzzy, and colors bled into each other like watercolors in the rain. The floor suddenly felt too far away, and my legs weren't quite connected to my body anymore.

I heard him call my name, but it sounded muffled, like he was speaking through water. The door handle slipped from my fingers as my knees buckled, and the last thing I remembered was falling toward the hardwood floor as darkness rushed up to meet me.

When I woke up, I was lying on the small couch in the corner of Professor Rhys's o

RAEKieran walked me back to my dorm, his hand steady on my elbow as we navigated the hallways. The iced tea had started to dry in my hair, making it sticky and matted against my scalp. My uniform clung to my skin in uncomfortable patches, the fabric stained brown and sweet-smelling.Conrad caught up to us halfway there, slightly out of breath like he'd been running. He fell into step beside me, and I could feel his eyes on my face."I'm sorry," he said quietly. "I don't know what happened back there. I just... froze."I didn't look at him. "I frankly do not care."The words came out harsher than I'd intended, but I was too tired to soften them. Conrad flinched like I'd slapped him."You do not have to feel like such a monster," I continued, my voice flat. "Because I get it. You are going out of your way to be kind to make space for me here. You are doing your best to be kind."I turned to look at Kieran then, taking in his rigid posture, the way his jaw was still clenched tight. "You

RAEI asked three different people for directions to the prep room before I finally found it. Each one looked at me like I'd grown a second head, but they all said the same thing I already knew from my handbook: most people stayed there to refresh and talk before dinner. The last girl, a sophomore with perfectly straightened hair, actually wrinkled her nose when she spoke to me.The prep room was exactly what I'd expected from a place like Nocturne. The entirety of it was polished marble and gleaming mirrors, with clusters of girls touching up their makeup and adjusting their uniforms. The chatter died when I walked in, replaced by the kind of pointed silence that felt heavier than any noise.I found an empty corner and tried to look busy, fidgeting with my fingers while pretending to check my appearance in one of the smaller mirrors. The staring was immediate and obvious. Girls kept glancing at me through their reflections, whispering behind their hands. I caught fragments of convers

RAEThe door clicked shut behind Kieran, and the silence that followed felt deafening. I stood there for a moment, my back pressed against the wood, trying to catch my breath. The takeout bag sat forgotten on my desk, steam still rising from whatever he'd brought me.I had just told him about Luca. About the mate bonds. The words had tumbled out before I could stop them, desperate and stupid and completely reckless. Now both of them would know things I wasn't ready to share, things I barely understood myself.I just wanted to get him off my back and nothing had more shock value than that. That was the only thing that saved me. He was too self-absorbed to handle the thought of sharing. Maybe it would keep him away, at least for a while. Maybe. My hands were shaking. I balled them into fists, pressing my knuckles against my thighs until the trembling stopped. This was not how I'd imagined my first day would end. Hell, this wasn't how I'd imagined any day would end.I pulled out my phone

ANNALISEThe prep room buzzed with the usual pre-dinner chatter. Girls clustered around the long mirrors, touching up lipstick and adjusting their hair before we all filed into the main dining hall. I sat at the center table, the prime spot that had been mine since sophomore year, watching the controlled chaos through the reflection in front of me.That's when I saw her slip in through the side door. I was surprised. Shocked even. She moved like she wanted to disappear, shoulders hunched, steps small. She picked the loneliest corner and sat at one of the smaller mirrors nobody ever used. I almost rolled my eyes. Still pretending she didn’t exist. But my gaze lingered anyway.A couple of boys passing the doorway glanced at her before looking away quickly. Nothing special, not really, but enough to twist something in my chest. Even pathetic things could draw attention if they were new."Look who's playing invisible again," I said, loud enough for the girls around me to hear. My voice ca

CONRADThe knock on my door came shortly after lunch. I was sitting at my desk, trying to focus on the history essay that was due tonight, but my mind kept drifting to this morning. To Luca's rage. To the blood on his knuckles. To the way he'd grabbed me and slammed me against the wall like I was nothing."Mr. Firstchild," came the voice through the door. "Please report to the Headmistress's office immediately."My stomach dropped. I set down my pen and straightened my tie. Whatever this was about, it couldn't be good. Maybe Luca had gotten himself in more trouble. Maybe the Headmistress wanted to know how horrid his mntal health had become if he was even threatening Annalise. The walk to the administrative wing felt longer than usual. My footsteps echoed on the polished floors, and I found myself checking my appearance in every reflective surface I passed. Hair combed, uniform pressed, everything in its proper place. I'd learned early that presentation mattered at Nocturne. That fitt

KIERANThe words hit me like ice water. My vision went white around the edges, and I felt my fangs extend fully before I could stop them."What did you just say?""Luca is my mate too." She said it quietly, but each word carved itself into my chest. "You are both my mates."The blood song roared in my ears, louder than it had ever been. My hands shook with the need to grab her, to mark her, to make sure she understood exactly who she belonged to. The rational part of my brain screamed warnings, but the vampire in me was past listening."No." The word came out as a growl. "No, you're mine. My blood song."She took a step back, and that small movement snapped something inside me. She was retreating from me. Moving away when she should be moving closer."Kieran, I know this is complicated, but—""Complicated?" I laughed, and the sound was sharp enough to cut. "You think this is complicated?"I could smell her fear now, sharp and acrid under the sweetness of her blood. But I could also sm
