RAE

The memory hit me sideways, dragged up from somewhere deep and old, the kind of place you think is buried for good until it claws its way back out.

I was six again, crouched in the garden behind our estate with the sun warming my shoulders and dirt packed under my fingernails. The air smelled like grass, the earth and something sweet. A butterfly was tangled in a spider’s web, its wings flashing blue every time it struggled, beautiful and frantic. The spider waited at the edge, perfectly still, patient in a way that made my stomach twist.

I remember holding my breath as I reached out, fingers shaking while I tried to peel the silk away without tearing it, without ruining anything. I didn’t want to break the web. I didn’t want to hurt the spider. I just wanted the butterfly free.

“What are you doing?”

Seraphina’s voice came from behind me, calm and curious. I turned and saw her standing there, golden hair catching the light like it always did, her face open and unreadable.

RAEThe impact hit us like the end of the world. Metal screamed as something slammed into the car, glass exploding inward in a storm of shards. We spun, weightless and crushing all at once, the seatbelt biting into my chest and knocking the air from my lungs in a painful rush. Someone screamed behind me, a raw, animal sound that cut off too abruptly, and then everything was noise and pain and the sickening certainty that whatever came next would be worse. When the car finally stopped tumbling, my body kept waiting for another hit that never came.Silence rushed in so fast it felt like pressure, like my ears had been stuffed with cotton soaked in panic. I tried to breathe and found it hard, every inhale catching on something sharp inside my chest. I turned my head slowly because moving fast felt impossible, like my bones were packed too tight in my skin. The windshield was gone, leaving jagged teeth of glass clinging to the frame. The hood had folded in on itself, bent so badly it bare

RAELuca’s arms hooked under mine and dragged me upright, my feet scraping uselessly over the ground because my legs had forgotten what they were for. Everything hurt in a way that felt wrong, like my body had rearranged itself without asking permission. Blood pooled in my mouth, thick and metallic, and when I swallowed it burned all the way down.“We need to get you out of here,” Luca said.He sounded calm if you listened carelessly, but I could hear the strain in it, the tightness he used when he was afraid and refusing to let it show.“He’s mad,” I whispered. The words barely made it past my throat. Conrad’s fingers had been there not long ago, pressing, crushing, and even now my neck felt wrong, swollen and tender, every breath scraping. My pulse thudded loud in my ears, too fast, too uneven.“This isn’t rage anymore,” I tried again, forcing the thought through the pain, through the dizziness. “He’s just… mad.”Luca didn’t argue. He just pulled me with him, half carrying, half dra

CONRAD The door slammed shut. Kieran's magic sealed it with purple bands of light that hummed against the wood.I wanted no second running towards it and slamming it multiple times in an effort to rip it off it's hinges. But it seemed protected. Ten times stronger for some reason. Then I heard Rae's voice from behind the door. Her voice was muffled but clear enough to decipher. "It's Conrad. He's the killer."My legs gave out.I hit the kitchen floor hard. My knees cracked against tile. The sound echoed in the sudden silence."It's over," I whispered. The dark passengers circled me. Their burned faces tilted at odd angles. They studied me like I was something fascinating. No...it would be more about peering into something broken."You said you could make it all go away." My voice cracked. "That you would help me."They blinked. All of them. In perfect unison."But we did?" The voices overlapped. Multiple tones speaking the same words. "We covered your crimes when you would have been

RAEI stayed collapsed against Kieran, my vision swimming. Blood filled my mouth. Every part of me hurt."Luca," I managed to say, looking toward the doorway where he stood. He hadn't moved. His face had gone completely blank, like someone had wiped every expression off it. "That's not possible," he said. The words came out flat. Mechanical."It's Conrad," I said again. "He's the—""No." Luca shook his head once. "That's not possible."Kieran didn't waste time on disbelief. His eyes swept the room, cataloging everything. Me bleeding. Conrad against the wall. The empty space between us that I knew was crawling with dark passengers."Stop them!" I screamed. "Before they get to us!"Kieran's head snapped toward where I was looking. His expression didn't change. He couldn't see them."Use magic!" The words tore out of my throat. "Just use magic!"He didn't question it. Purple light erupted from his hands and he threw it forward in a wave. The wind hit the dark passengers I could see and s

CASSIANThe knife moved through the onion with practiced ease. I'd been cooking for centuries. Long enough that the rhythm of it felt like meditation. Chop, scrape, add to the pan. Simple. Repetitive. Calming. The soul tie flared.Fear crashed into me like a tidal wave. Raw, desperate, overwhelming fear. The kind that came when death was close enough to feel its breath on your neck.Rae.The knife clattered to the cutting board. I reached through the soul tie immediately, following that thread of panic back to its source. I needed to know where she was. I needed to get to her now.My senses flared outward, searching for the location. But something else caught my attention first. A wrongness in the air. A shift in the temperature. The smell of sulfur and old blood. My hand shot up.Metal bit into my palm. I caught the axe before it could split my face open. The blade pressed against my skin. Heat radiated from it. Not the heat of regular metal. This was infernal fire.I opened my eyes.
