After Layson left to shower, Adela sat frozen on the couch, his words still ringing in her ears.

“Not tonight. Go sleep in the next room.”

She blinked, trying to make sense of it. Why had he asked her here at all? What was the point?

The sound of water running in the bathroom snapped her out of her thoughts. Her cheeks burned, perhaps from the wine, or maybe from the confusion swirling in her mind. She got up, stretching stiff legs, and walked toward the room Layson had mentioned.

Opening the door, a cool breeze greeted her. The room’s window was slightly ajar, allowing the crisp night air to seep in. Adela welcomed the relief, stepping over to close the window. The room was minimally furnished but tidy, with an inviting bed waiting in the corner. She sighed, shaking her head.

“What’s gotten into him today?” she murmured to herself, slipping under the covers.

The following morning, Adela woke early. She had to head to work at Walton Enterprises and didn’t want to be late. Grabbing her

Just as Adela was still stewing in her own thoughts, her phone buzzed. It was Sam from the production side.He sounded almost... upbeat.“Adela, soon as I got to the office today, I heard from VP Clark—Enduring Encounter is officially recasting the female lead. Once the new actress is confirmed, things are gonna get real busy on your end.”Very smooth way to break the news: letting her know she didn’t need to worry about being forced into the role, and the project was continuing as planned. Basically: be ready. And yeah—it did make her feel a lot better. The gloom hanging over her finally lifted a bit. She relaxed and even gossiped with Sam a little.“I mean, they'd already locked in Lucy. What happened? Don’t tell me it was because of me?”Sam laughed. Clearly, now that the project was back on track, he was back to his usual self.“I just heard what Clark said. Lucy’s, like, her half-relative or something. Apparently Lucy totally screwed herself. Pissed off the wrong guy, and boom—in

Layson gave a faint smile. “The Norman Group’s not looking to invest in TV dramas right now. But there are plenty of people who’d love to.”With his current resources, investing in entertainment wasn’t worth the trouble. Sure, some investors did it to make money—but most? They had other motives. The Norman family didn’t need that. Back when Richard was in charge, he’d already cleaned up the company’s reputation. And once it passed to Layson? It went from whitewashed to squeaky clean.Top-tier taxpayer, regular charity donor, and stellar public image. Maybe not the flashiest brand in the world—but respected across industries. So no, Layson didn’t need to get involved directly. All he had to do was hint at interest in the project and people would come running—either to kiss up or cash in. He didn’t care why. As long as the job got done. For him, it was a one-sentence task. He wouldn’t even have remembered it if Adela hadn’t brought it up.Hearing he wouldn’t be personally funding the dr

Adela walked into the bathroom with Layson’s white shirt in her arms. As she started unbuttoning it, she paused—confused. She remembered only fastening the second button before her nap. But now, all of them were buttoned. She frowned. Was she getting forgetful?By the time she got to the third button, her breathing quickened. She tried not to panic as she undid the rest and stepped in front of the mirror. The marks weren’t deep, but they stood out on her fair skin—faint, yet startling. She changed clothes but didn’t walk out right away. Instead, she sat on the windowsill, phone in hand, staring at the screen in a daze. Should I call Evelyn? But how could she even ask about this? She hovered over her contact list for a long time, then gave up. Annoyed, she picked up the project files, hoping work could distract her from the sour feeling in her chest. Just hours ago she’d been in such a good mood. Now? It was gone. Not long after, Layson came in. She didn’t even hear the door open, only

Adela changed into Layson’s crisp white shirt in the bathroom. When she came out, she saw him already lying on the bed. That usual aloofness in his face was gone—his eyes darkened as soon as he saw her.She quietly climbed onto the bed, curled up on her side with her back against his chest. There was only one pillow, so she settled next to him, feeling his steady heartbeat behind her. She thought she’d be too wired to sleep, but within minutes, she was out cold.Layson stared at his peacefully sleeping girl for a long while. He wasn’t one to nap during the day, but today, he’d made an exception just to hold her.Later, back at his desk, he had just sat down when there was a knock at the door. Barnes walked in.“Sir, here’s the list of investors behind Enduring Encounter.”Layson glanced at it. No surprise—it was a well-off investor with both money and time. What did catch his eye, though, was that this person also had considerable power.“That kind of status,” Layson said, flipping th

Adela really wanted to say: “Sis, can you not be so delusional? You're clearly way older than me.”Layson just said a couple words to her, and she thought that meant he liked her? Then by that logic, every time he gave an interview with a female journalist, was that deep affection too? Please—no sane person would believe that. And he already said he didn’t even know her. So this woman wasn’t just blind—apparently deaf too.Adela was done playing along. She slipped out of Layson’s arms and said coolly, “Babe, she’s waiting for you to say something.”She reached to pour herself some tea, but before her hand even touched the teapot, the door swung open. A young waiter in uniform poked his head in, paused when he spotted the teapot, then chirped, “Would you like another pot of tea?”Adela smiled sweetly and gestured to him, “Go ahead and bring it in—might as well save you the trouble of carrying it back.”The waiter came in and poured them both a cup, then looked awkwardly at the woman ac

Adela had barely read a few pages of the file when the lounge door opened. Layson loosened his tie and walked in, spotting her leaning against a folded blanket by the window. The corners of his lips tugged up into a smile."Didn’t you say you were tired? Why aren’t you lying down on the bed?” he asked as he made his way over. He sat beside her and effortlessly scooped her into his lap.He kissed the corner of her lips—sweet and citrusy from the oranges. That hint of fruit made him deepen the kiss without thinking. Her soft, sugary scent filled his lungs, nearly breaking his control.Looking at her dewy eyes, he gave her another gentle peck and murmured, voice husky, “You taste sweet. Smell sweet, too.”Her ears flushed bright red. She looked down shyly and muttered, “Didn’t you say we were going to eat?”“Mhm, we are.”He said that, but held her for a solid five more minutes before finally letting go.Once she was back on her feet, Adela grabbed her phone and casually asked, “That guy
