Chapter 16

Klaus's expression didn't change, but something in his posture relaxed almost as he seemed a bit relieved that she had taken the bait. She did not know if that was a good thing yet.

"Good. Conference Room B is three doors down on the left. I'll see you there in thirty minutes."

He turned and walked out, leaving Ambelyn alone with the file and a mounting sense of either opportunity or disaster—she wasn't sure which.

She found an empty office and closed the door, spreading the contents of the file across the desk, trying to arrange it in a way that she would tackle it one by one, absolving the important things and discarding the irrelevant ones.

Then she dove in, her mind shifting into the focused mode she remembered from college, when she'd had to absorb massive amounts of information quickly for presentations and exams.

  • Regret After Divorce: Falling In Love All Over Again    Chapter 36

Chapter 36"Mr. Moreau, this is Thomas Blackwood. I'm calling about your daughter."There was a pause. Then, "We don't have a daughter."The words were cold, final, exactly what Thomas had expected. Perfect."I understand you've disowned her," Thomas said smoothly. "And I respect that decision. But I thought you should know what she's done. What she's continuing to do.""What are you talking about?" Robert's voice had shifted from dismissive to cautious."Ambelyn divorced me. Filed the papers without warning, took our son—your grandson—and left. She's now living with a friend and working for another man. A man she knew from college. A man she never mentioned during our entire marriage." Thomas let each word land like a carefully placed stone. "I thought you should know that your daughter has abandoned her marriage vows, taken a child away from his father, and is now—well, I'll let you draw your own conclusions about her relationship with her new employer."The silence on the other end

  • Regret After Divorce: Falling In Love All Over Again    Chapter 35

Chapter 35"We make her regret leaving," Veronica said simply. "We make her life difficult enough that she comes crawling back. And then you have all the power, all the leverage. You can make her agree to whatever terms you want—including a paternity test, if you still care about that by then.""How do we make her life difficult? She's working for Niklaus Thorne now. She has money, stability, protection from one of the most powerful men in the city.""We start with her parents." Veronica's smile turned predatory. "Robert and Catherine Moreau, currently living in Boston. Very traditional. Very religious. Very concerned with propriety and appearances. I'm guessing they don't know about the divorce yet?""They cut contact with Ambelyn years ago," Thomas said slowly, understanding dawning. "After they found out she wasn't pure before the wedding. They blamed her for bringing shame to the family.""Exactly. And I'm betting they still hold that grudge." Veronica pulled out her own phone, sc

  • Regret After Divorce: Falling In Love All Over Again    Chapter 34

Chapter 34The Blackwood estate felt different without Ambelyn in it.Thomas hadn't expected that. He'd thought her absence would be a relief—one less obligation to maintain, one less reminder of his moment of weakness six years ago when he'd agreed to his parents' insistence that he "do the right thing" and marry the girl they'd arranged for him.Instead, the house felt wrong. Empty in a way that had nothing to do with physical space and everything to do with the strange vacuum her departure had created. He stood in his study now, nursing his third scotch of the afternoon even though it wasn't yet four o'clock, staring at the legal documents his attorney had delivered that morning. Divorce decree. Custody agreement. Asset distribution. All signed, sealed, official. All proof that Ambelyn Moreau had walked away from him like he was nothing.Like he was disposable. The audacity of it made his blood boil."Are you going to drink yourself into a stupor, or are you going to actually do so

  • Regret After Divorce: Falling In Love All Over Again    Chapter 33

Chapter 33And underneath it all, the terrible fear that Lucas might be right. That maybe he was going to die soon. That maybe it didn't matter if he came back to school or tried to be normal, because his heart was broken and no one was going to fix it and all the medication and carefulness in the world might not be enough. He thought about his mama, about how she'd fought so hard to bring him home, to give him this chance at normalcy. He thought about the note in his lunchbox—*You're my superhero*—and how much he wanted to live up to that. But sitting in his classroom with his chest still aching and Lucas's words echoing in his head, Iniko didn't feel like a superhero. He felt like a scared little boy with a broken heart and no idea how to fix it.Miss Chen appeared beside his desk, crouching down to his level. "Iniko, honey, do you need to go to the nurse's office?" she asked quietly, her hand gentle on his shoulder.Iniko shook his head. "I'm okay. I just need to sit for a while."

  • Regret After Divorce: Falling In Love All Over Again    Chapter 32

Chapter 32The truth of it seemed to throw Lucas off balance. For a moment, he just stared at Iniko, his mouth opening and closing like a fish. Then his expression hardened into something cruel and defensive."At least I have a dad," Lucas spat. "What do you have? A mom who nobody wants and a broken heart that's never going to get fixed. You're probably gonna die soon anyway, so why even bother coming back to school?"The words should have hurt more than they did. But Iniko had heard worse—from doctors who thought he couldn't understand their whispered conversations, from Thomas during the few times they'd interacted, from his own dark thoughts late at night when the hospital machines beeped and he wondered if he'd ever get better."I'm not going to die," Iniko said, with more confidence than he felt. "And even if I did, at least I'd die knowing my mama loves me. Can you say the same about your dad?"It was a low blow—the kind of thing Iniko rarely said, the kind of meanness he usuall

  • Regret After Divorce: Falling In Love All Over Again    Chapter 31

Chapter 31"I think she just gets bored," Lily said wisely. "My mom says some kids are too smart for their own good, and they get bored easily. I think that's Cassidy."Iniko absorbed this information, trying to imagine what this girl must be like. Smart enough to correct teachers. Brave enough to pull pranks. Lonely enough to not have any friends despite clearly being interesting. He wondered if they'd get along, if they'd meet. Part of him was eager—another kid who was different, who didn't quite fit in, might understand what it was like to feel like an outsider. But another part of him was nervous. What if she thought he was stupid? What if she didn't like him?"I'd like to meet her," Iniko said quietly. "When she comes back to school.""You'll probably either love her or hate her," Sarah predicted. "There's no in-between with Cassidy."The conversation shifted to other topics—the upcoming Halloween parade, who was going to be what for the costume party, whether Miss Chen would let
