Chapter 33

And underneath it all, the terrible fear that Lucas might be right. That maybe he was going to die soon. That maybe it didn't matter if he came back to school or tried to be normal, because his heart was broken and no one was going to fix it and all the medication and carefulness in the world might not be enough.

He thought about his mama, about how she'd fought so hard to bring him home, to give him this chance at normalcy. He thought about the note in his lunchbox—*You're my superhero*—and how much he wanted to live up to that.

But sitting in his classroom with his chest still aching and Lucas's words echoing in his head, Iniko didn't feel like a superhero.

He felt like a scared little boy with a broken heart and no idea how to fix it.

Miss Chen appeared beside his desk, crouching down to his level. "Iniko, honey, do you need to go to the nurse's office?" she asked quietly, her hand gentle on his shoulder.

Iniko shook his head. "I'm okay. I just need to sit for a while."

  • Regret After Divorce: Falling In Love All Over Again    Chapter 32

Chapter 32The truth of it seemed to throw Lucas off balance. For a moment, he just stared at Iniko, his mouth opening and closing like a fish. Then his expression hardened into something cruel and defensive."At least I have a dad," Lucas spat. "What do you have? A mom who nobody wants and a broken heart that's never going to get fixed. You're probably gonna die soon anyway, so why even bother coming back to school?"The words should have hurt more than they did. But Iniko had heard worse—from doctors who thought he couldn't understand their whispered conversations, from Thomas during the few times they'd interacted, from his own dark thoughts late at night when the hospital machines beeped and he wondered if he'd ever get better."I'm not going to die," Iniko said, with more confidence than he felt. "And even if I did, at least I'd die knowing my mama loves me. Can you say the same about your dad?"It was a low blow—the kind of thing Iniko rarely said, the kind of meanness he usuall

  • Regret After Divorce: Falling In Love All Over Again    Chapter 31

Chapter 31"I think she just gets bored," Lily said wisely. "My mom says some kids are too smart for their own good, and they get bored easily. I think that's Cassidy."Iniko absorbed this information, trying to imagine what this girl must be like. Smart enough to correct teachers. Brave enough to pull pranks. Lonely enough to not have any friends despite clearly being interesting. He wondered if they'd get along, if they'd meet. Part of him was eager—another kid who was different, who didn't quite fit in, might understand what it was like to feel like an outsider. But another part of him was nervous. What if she thought he was stupid? What if she didn't like him?"I'd like to meet her," Iniko said quietly. "When she comes back to school.""You'll probably either love her or hate her," Sarah predicted. "There's no in-between with Cassidy."The conversation shifted to other topics—the upcoming Halloween parade, who was going to be what for the costume party, whether Miss Chen would let

  • Regret After Divorce: Falling In Love All Over Again    Chapter 30

Chapter 30Iniko had forgotten how much he loved school. He'd forgotten the smell of chalk dust and fresh paper, the sound of pencils scratching against notebooks, the way Miss Chen's voice rose and fell as she read stories during circle time. He'd forgotten the simple joy of sitting at a desk with other children his age, working through problems and raising his hand to answer questions. Most of all, he'd forgotten what it felt like to be normal. The morning passed in a blur of activity. Miss Chen had welcomed him back with genuine warmth, and his classmates had clustered around him during the first break, everyone talking at once, asking questions about where he'd been and whether he was okay now. Iniko had deflected most of the medical questions—his mama had taught him to say "I was sick but I'm better now" without going into details—and instead let his friends fill him in on everything he'd missed. There was a new hamster in the classroom named Sir Fluffington. Marcus Chen had lost

  • Regret After Divorce: Falling In Love All Over Again    Chapter 29

Chapter 29"Our history?" Shawn repeated. "So there is history. Plural. Multiple encounters. This is amazing. This is the best news I've heard all week.""It's not news. It's ancient history that has no bearing on the present.""Except you're hiring her to work directly with you. Every day. In close proximity." Shawn shook his head, still grinning. "This is either going to be a spectacular success or a complete disaster. I can't wait to see which.""It's going to be professional and productive," Klaus insisted. "I'm not interested in rehashing the past. I'm interested in having a competent assistant who can actually do the job.""Right. Professional and productive. That's definitely the energy I'm getting from the way you keep checking your phone." Shawn leaned forward. "When does she start?""Monday.""And you're not at all concerned about working with someone you had a—what did you call it? History with?""I'm a professional. She's a professional. We're both adults who can separate

Chapter 28I'm very mature for my age," Cassidy said primly. "Everyone says so. Especially after I explained the stock market to Bobby Jenkins's dad."Klaus decided not to pursue that particular thread. "Cassidy, I need you to go back to your reading corner and let me work. If you can be quiet for one hour—one full hour—I'll take you to that bookstore you like for lunch. Deal?"Cassidy's eyes lit up. "The one with the café that has the good hot chocolate?""That's the one.""And I can get three books instead of two?"Klaus knew when he was being negotiated with. His daughter was going to be a terror in business someday. "Three books. But only if you're completely silent for the next hour.""Deal!" Cassidy hopped off the desk and scampered back to her corner, grabbing a thick chapter book from the pile and settling in with the kind of intense focus that always startled Klaus when he saw it.Four years old and reading Harry Potter. Four years old and bored by basic arithmetic. Four year
