Chapter 16

Audrey Westbrook

~•~

When I received the email, I read it a couple of times because I couldn’t believe what I was seeing.

I picked up my phone and dialed my friend’s number, the one who had helped me get Vincent’s phone records.

“Are you sure you got me the right information?” I asked, tightening my grip around the phone.

“Of course. Have I ever failed you? Or given you the wrong information?” he asked.

I let out a sigh.

“Okay, thank you,” I whispered before ending the call.

Chapter 37Audrey Westbrook ~•~I hadn’t really made a decision about the baby, but I only said I was getting an abortion to make Vincent back off.The expression on his face when he heard those words leave my mouth almost made me laugh again, but I didn’t. I wanted him to think I was serious and not joking.“No, no,” he said, shaking his head. “You can’t get an abortion.”I frowned. “What?”“Audrey, can we go inside and talk?” His voice suddenly became calm.“No, we can talk right here,” I replied.I didn’t want him coming into my apartment.“Audrey, come on,” he muttered. “I don’t want other people overhearing us. This is a private conversation. Just let me inside.”After much back and forth, I finally decided to let him into my apartment. It was still untidy, and my boxes were still packed. I moved a few things around so he could sit on the couch.Once we were inside, neither of us said anything for the first few seconds. Then he pressed a hand to his forehead, looking exhausted.

Chapter 36Vincent Cross~•~I thought Melanie was playing with me when she told me Audrey had moved to Boston. She had even accidentally let it slip that Audrey didn’t want me to find out about the pregnancy.Everything sounded like a lie, but I decided to take the risk and go to the address she had given me.There was no way Audrey was pregnant. And even if she was, she wouldn’t have kept something like that from me. It was something we’d been looking forward to for the longest time. No, Audrey couldn’t do that to me, even if I had broken her heart. But when I knocked on the door and the woman standing in front of me turned out to be Audrey, I froze.I couldn’t believe she actually left.“A—Audrey,” I stuttered, still struggling to believe what I was actually seeing. She had really packed her things and moved to a new apartment in Boston. She hadn’t even told her parents or the rest of her family. Or perhaps they were just lying for her because they didn’t want me to find her.I was

Chapter 35Audrey Westbrook ~•~There was nothing to eat in my apartment because I had only been there for a few hours, so I decided to go out and get dinner from a nearby restaurant I had found online.I was waiting for my food when someone walked in.It was a man wearing a tailored suit that fit him perfectly, accentuating his broad shoulders and well-built physique. He looked oddly familiar, and I couldn’t stop staring at him. However, I couldn’t quite pinpoint where I had seen him before. My gaze was still fixed on him until I realized he was approaching my table.I quickly looked away, pretending I hadn’t been staring at him since he walked into the restaurant.“Hey,” he said, waving at me.I turned to my right and then to my left to check if someone else was there because I had no idea why he was speaking to me. Or maybe it was because he had noticed me staring at him.“Me?” I finally asked. He nodded. “Yes. How are you doing?”I took a deep breath.Did he recognize me too, or

Chapter 34Vincent Cross ~•~I missed her badly, and I was willing to do anything to fix my relationship with Audrey, even if she didn’t want to get back together with me immediately. I just needed her to forgive me genuinely. So, I decided to go to her former firm and have a conversation with her boss who happened to be the managing partner. When I arrived, I had to wait at the reception for over ten minutes before someone asked me to go up to the office. As I entered, she gestured for me to take a seat. She looked at me as though she already knew what I wanted to talk about.I sat down and gave her a polite smile.“Hey, thank you for agreeing to meet with me,” I said, expressing my gratitude. She smiled back at me. “It’s fine. I have a feeling I already know what you want to talk about.”I adjusted my glasses and leaned forward. “Yes. I want you to give Audrey her job back. I’m sorry for being so direct, but I would appreciate it. I don’t mind doing you a favor in return.”She fol

Chapter 33Audrey Westbrook ~•~I felt bad as the calls kept coming in, but I declined them one after another.I was moving to a different city without telling my family. I hadn’t even arrived yet, but my parents and brother were already blowing up my phone. They hadn’t seen me for a few hours, so I guessed they were worried about me.I was still contemplating texting my parents to let them know I was okay when my phone buzzed with a message. It was from Vincent.[Audrey, where are you? Please, I really need to see you. The board has been pressuring me about the divorce. Let’s fix things, please.]I hissed as I read his message. He had no idea I was leaving New York because of him. I didn’t want anything that would tie me back to him, and I certainly didn’t want to fix our marriage.I had thought about everything. It would be nice to rebuild our family, but who knew what he would accuse me of next? What if he believed his family over me again?I didn’t want to find myself in that sit

Chapter 32Audrey Westbrook ~•~“Do you still love me?” I repeated his ridiculous question with a bitter chuckle. After everything he had done to me and everything he had put me through, he really thought this was an appropriate time to ask me that? What exactly did he expect me to say?I still found it strange that he had insisted on meeting me because he had something urgent to discuss. Yet, instead of getting straight to the point, he was asking whether I still loved him. What was going on?Before he could say anything, I spoke again.“Is that what you called me here for? You made me leave my best friend just so you could ask me this silly question.”Vincent’s expression crumpled.“Silly question?” he asked.I nodded without hesitation.“Yes. I actually thought you had something reasonable to say, but this is a total waste of time.”I was already upset because I hadn’t even wanted to be there in the first place. And standing in front of the house I once called home brought back so
