Chapter 4

Author: Serein M
The phone hit the floor. The screen shattered. Kian collapsed. His legs simply gave out.

My mother scrambled for the phone, her voice a mangled wreck. "You found her? Where? Are you sure it's her?"

The captain repeated the address.

All the blood drained from my mother's face. She lunged at Kian, shaking his shoulders like a madwoman. "Get up! What good is collapsing now! Go look! Go prove it's not Freya!"

They stumbled their way to the pack's medical center.

I floated above them, watching this "

Kian's POV"Give us the half-blood mutt!"Rhys's remaining Rogues kicked me onto the cold marble floor. They ripped the pup from the arms of an Omega servant."No! You can't take him!" I rasped, trying to grab the man's leg.He sneered and stomped on my hand, grinding my knuckles into the floor."Save it, Kian," he laughed, looking down at me like I was trash. "You got your Mate killed. Your Pack is falling apart. You're a pathetic waste of an Alpha. You lost the right to protect anyone a long time ago."I collapsed. I didn't fight back. The Pack House door slammed shut, and the last anchor I had to this world finally snapped.I lay on the hard floor and a sound came out of my throat. It was a laugh, but it sounded more like a sob.Payback. This was all my payback.I used to be so arrogant. I thought my love for Freya was unbreakable.I thought I was the strongest Alpha, that I could give her the world.Looking back now, that "love" was a fucking joke.I kept replaying the night before

The years passed under the redwood tree. Its leaves fell and grew back, time and time again.Zara visited almost every month. The lines of maturity began to show on her face. One day, she leaned against the trunk, clutching a document. Her knuckles were white."Freya, guess what," she said. Her voice held a cruel kind of satisfaction. "Isolde's dead."The wind whispered through the branches."You can't imagine how brutal the barrens are," Zara said calmly, as if it were nothing. "That sickness she faked? It became real. No medicine. No one to care for her. She just rotted away out there."Zara looked down at the paper and read. "Her wolf faded completely. Her body was covered in sores. She died in agony."I leaned against the tree, my soul scattering and reforming with the breeze. No joy. No regret.Just a sense of finality. It was over.A few months later, Zara came to the woods holding a strange man's hand.He was tall, with kind eyes that looked at Zara with pure adoration."Freya,

The rain hadn't stopped. Funeral candles flickered in the dark hall.A small figure, hidden by the night, crept toward my coffin. It was Zara. Her eyes were swollen, but her movements were sharp. All by herself, using her powerful Beta strength, she heaved up one end of the heavy coffin and began to drag it outside.Rain and sweat dripped from her chin.I floated beside her, watching her use her own body to shield the coffin from the downpour."Freya, do you remember?" she whispered as she walked, talking to me, talking to herself. "When I was a kid, I was so weak. The other pups always picked on me. It was you. You charged in, you took that claw swipe for me.""You even gave me your own healing salve."She stopped, leaning against the coffin, and slid to the ground in the mud. She finally broke down, sobbing."Why… why did it have to be you…"I reached out my transparent hand, stroking her wet hair again and again. She couldn't feel it, but it was like she sensed something. She slowly

In the days that followed, Isolde was a nervous wreck. Kian had cut her off completely."The purest Alpha bloodline."The medical officer's voice exploded in the Council room."She was carrying a pup. Barely a month old."My mother's body swayed. She fainted, hitting the floor. My father moved to catch her, but his own legs gave out. They both collapsed in a heap on the cold tile.Kian froze. He looked like a statue about to crumble."My… pup…" His voice was shattered. He spun around and punched the wall.CRACK! A bloody fissure appeared in the plaster as his fist connected. He didn't stop. He hit it again. And again. Like a madman. Until his knuckles were pulp and blood streamed down the wall."Freya… I'm sorry… I'm so sorry…"His howl of grief and pain echoed through the entire territory. Far in the distance, the pack wolves felt their Alpha's despair and answered with a chorus of mournful howls.A few days later, the captured Rogue, Rhys, confessed everything."Isolde's sickness was

His hand shook so badly he could barely grip the edge of the white sheet. He ripped it back.I looked at my own corpse. The skin, torn by beasts, was a mess of black and purple veins from the Wolfsbane. It had decayed impossibly fast. My features were unrecognizable. My mother let out a strangled scream and collapsed."Not her! That's not her!" She shook her head wildly, digging her nails into her own a

Stripping me of my duties didn't give Kian the satisfaction he expected. For the next few days, he was like a man possessed. Calling my phone. Sending texts. Over and over."Freya, pick up.""Haven't you been dramatic long enough?""Just come back. I'll restore your titles. I won't let Isolde touch your things again."By the end, he'd even swallowed his Alpha pride. His tone was almost begging."Freya, I can't stand this goddamn silence. Please. Just answer me."I floated behind him, watching this pathetic, too-late display. I felt nothing."Honey, what are you looking at?"Isolde walked in. She carried a cup of hot black coffee. Her cheeks were flushed, her steps light. Her voice was sickly sweet.Kian flinched like a thief caught in the act. He slammed his phone face down on the table. He turned to give her a half-hearted hug, but his eyes froze on her neck. His pupils shrank. "Is that the Luna Stone? Why do you have it?"I looked down at my own empty, transparent chest. That necklac
