Chapter 3

Autor: New Moon
The next moment, my door swung open.

Trailing behind Joshua and Daxon, Ciara entered and headed straight for the music box—the only keepsake Mom had left me before she died early.

"Madie, let's give the music box to Ciara so she can play with it."

That wasn't a request seeking my approval. It was a command.

I wanted to open my mouth and refuse. But my throat felt clogged, and I was so weak that I could barely say a word.

As Ciara cradled the music box in her arms, a flicker of malice flashed in her eyes.

Instinctively, I gripped Daxon's arms and looked up at him with pleading eyes. "No, that was Mom's…"

Before I could finish, she "accidentally" let it slip under my horrified gaze.

The music box plummeted toward the floor, and inside was the last photograph I had with Mom—the last item that reminded me of her gentleness in this world.

"Mom!" I threw myself off the bed, desperate to catch the music box. At that moment, nothing else mattered.

With a crack, the music box shattered into pieces, just as the wound on my back split open. Amongst the glittering fragments of the music box lying on the floor, Mom's smile splintered.

I hit the ground hard as warm blood gushed from my wound and dyed my white nightgown red. Joshua and Daxon rushed toward me with panic written all over their faces.

The malice on Ciara's face slipped away and was replaced by a pair of eyes brimming with tears. "I didn't mean to, Daxon… I swear! Why would she do this just for a music box? Did she just try to hurt herself just to frame me? I'm so scared…"

Just like that, the men's expressions shifted. Gone was their panic and concern, and in its place was cold disgust like they'd been deceived.

"Madie, you didn't waste your time in the black market and learned every dirty trick there, huh? Ciara just dropped it by accident, so how could you have gone so far to hurt yourself and smear her name just to gain sympathy?"

I was so overwhelmed with pain that I could barely speak. All I could do was watch as they gathered around the "shocked" Ciara, soothing her. Then, they led her away without sparing me a single glance.

Just before the door shut, I heard Daxon's hesitant voice. "Is it too cruel to lock Madie alone in her room?"

Joshua answered in a calm, detached voice, "They're both at fault, and it's only fair that they're both punished.

"Since she hurt herself, she should lie in the basement and stew in that nasty temper. That's going to be her punishment.

"As for Ciara…"

Both men's voices rang out with playful mockery. "She deserves strict punishment, too. She'll have to come shopping with us and plan her birthday party."

"Since she's weak, shopping will tire her out, and that'll be the best punishment."

Their laughter and footsteps faded down the hall.

Lying in my warm pool of blood, I could feel my body cool as my consciousness frayed. Just when I thought I'd die just like that, my phone screen glowed to life.

A scenic photograph of a Navaronese fjord lit up the screen, showing the still blue waters and snow-capped peaks. Below it was a single line that read, "It's a quiet world out here. Do you want me to come for you?"

It was him. He knew I'd made it out of there.

In the middle of the night, the door creaked open again. I thought it was a maid, only to find that it was Ciara. Fear and innocence had vanished from her face, replaced by feverish delight.

She crouched beside me and softly whispered in my ear, "Madie, does having your spine shattered hurt more than all the humiliation you've had to bear?

"I picked the spot for the nail myself. Daxon said I should choose a spot that could hurt the most but not kill you, so you'd never forget the fear. Oh, and have you heard?"

She pulled out her phone to show an affectionate photograph of her, Daxon, and Joshua dining in some glittering restaurant.

"Look. The night you were dragged into the black market, they were hosting a grand welcome-back party for me."

Her hand slowly slid down my spine and paused over the mark of humiliation etched into my skin.

"Do you remember the night at the black market, where you were blindfolded and crawling on the floor like an animal? Didn't you find the hostess' voice… a little familiar?"

My body stiffened instantly as my eyes widened sharply in shock.

When she saw my reaction, a satisfied grin spread across her face. And when she spoke, her honeyed voice was sharp like glass shards. "That's right. That hostess was me, and the host who made you drink from his hand was your fiance, Josh.

"You heard us that night, didn't you? He's incredible, but he'll never touch filth like you. You disgust him."

The truth struck me—Joshua had known all along, and he'd been part of my humiliation.

Ciara seemed to enjoy witnessing my despair as she continued, "Oh, and there's more. Daxon wants you to remember who rules this house, so we branded you with my name.

"Josh held my hand and guided me as we wrote that word, a mark of humiliation you despise to the core.

"Just accept your fate, Madie. You'll never win against me."

She patted my face before getting up and kicking my back. A wave of pain crashed over me and left me voiceless.

"Useless cripple," she spat before walking out in satisfaction, while the wreckage of my body and soul seemed to pull me deeper into a second hell.

With trembling fingers, I mustered all my strength to tap on the photograph showing the landscapes of freedom.

"You said if I wanted to leave, you'd come for me anytime. Does that promise still stand?"

"Outsider?"I laughed when I heard that word. They had also called me that when Ciara came back.Only this time, I held up my phone to Daxon. The screen showed the plummeting candlestick chart of Smyth Corporation's stock."I've shorted Smyth Corporation. It's bankrupt now."Then, I turned to Joshua and coldly added, "The Moores will follow soon."They blanked out and stared at me with dazed expressions before their faces twisted in anguish."Why, Madie? We stood by you for 20 years, so why are you destroying us for an outsider? Is he really that important?"I shot them an icy look and snapped back, "He's my husband, the man who'll walk through life and death with me. And who are you?"They exchanged glances in silence. Then, it struck them. Who were they, really? A housemate who'd stayed under the same roof with me by accident, but pushed me into hell. A fiance who'd betrayed me and slept with another woman in front of my face. Now, they were nothing.I didn't wait for the

"Home?" I muttered. Staring at Daxon's outstretched hand, I softly repeated the word before a faint smile curled up at my lips. There was no hatred or bitterness in that smile, only cold detachment."Are you talking about the home that nearly left me paralyzed?"Mr. Smyth, I'm aware who rules that home now. But here, I'm the one in command. So, either stand quietly as witnesses or leave."Panic flared in Daxon's and Joshua's eyes. "Madie, you've found out, haven't you?" Daxon's voice shook.I responded with a cold sneer, "Didn't it occur to you that I might learn the truth, after you threw me into the auction house to be turned into an anthropodermic fan?"Mr. Moore, tell me. Did you and Mrs. Moore enjoy yourselves that night?"At my words, Joshua's knees buckled, and he collapsed onto the floor. With tears brimming in his eyes, he tried to explain that he hadn't known or realized that masked beauty was me. But I refused to listen to a word he said. They kept claiming ignora

It wasn't until Joshua and Daxon saw the Felton family crest that they realized the man who'd taken me was the reclusive head of the Feltons, Elliott Felton.Everything I'd said that day was true. I'd never meant to marry Joshua, and my wedding gown had never been for their eyes."I'm going to bring Madie back. A man like Mr. Felton can't possibly love her," Daxon firmly announced."I'm coming, too." Joshua got up beside him. Their arrogant selves were convinced that a renowned family like the Feltons could never accept a "broken" woman like me. They told themselves that Elliott's attention and love toward me were nothing more than a whim.Deep down, they ridiculously believed that after ripping away his "mask", I could return under their control. But they never realized that they'd be facing judgment at the dinner party. Thus, they booked tickets bound for Jamborough.…Meanwhile, Elliott dipped a brush into pigment mixed with herbs and traced it over the scars on my back wit

Joshua and Daxon shot to their feet. Finally, they remembered the vacant, lifeless eyes I'd had when dragged back from the black market. The cold, unbending look I had when they tore my wedding gown and tossed me half-clothed into the garden finally crossed their mind.It hadn't been resentment but utter despair.A belated wave of realization crashed over them, dragged them under, and left them gasping for air. Then, they stormed into the villa as if they had lost their minds. With a loud thud, Daxon kicked Ciara's door wide open, and the smug smile on her face froze in place."Why did you do that to Madie? Why did you lie to us?" Joshua's voice broke with pain. For a moment, she faltered at the sight of his bloodshot eyes. Then, she slipped back into her usual fragility and pitiful look."Daxon, Josh, let me explain. It was Madie. She started it," Ciara refuted.Daxon's hand struck hard across her face and sent her sprawling. "Explain? What more is there to explain? Are you

Daxon and Joshua scoured the city for a whole day, only to return empty-handed.Dragging their exhausted bodies back to the villa, they'd barely entered the house when they noticed the swarm of workers busying around. After asking around, they learned that Ciara had ordered every surveillance camera around the villa destroyed. Sensing something off, they barged into the monitoring room and pulled up the backups. On the screens, image by image, Ciara's mask was stripped away. All the so-called rivalries and fights for affection had been her one-person show, and I'd been innocent all along. The footage showed how she'd tossed the crystal music box to the ground on purpose. With despair in my eyes, I'd looked at the screen, straight through time, as if condemning them. That was when they remembered how much the music box meant to me."There's another surveillance camera in Ciara's room," Daxon muttered. They'd installed it for fear that Ciara might pick on me, but they'd never bot

That day, I tightened my grip on Elliott's hand and stopped him from doing anything.Daxon and Joshua returned after a full week away of fun trips and surprises with Ciara. When they learned that I'd been taken away, both froze in disbelief.Daxon's eyes were bloodshot as he seized the butler, William Stone, by the collar. "When did this happen? Why wasn't I informed?"Joshua's expression was terrifyingly grave, while the shocked William was on the verge of tears. "Mr. Smyth, you said not to disturb you while with Ms. Ciara. And since Mr. Moore is marrying her and despises Ms. Madie, we dared not interrupt you both for anything that had to do with Ms. Madie…"Both men were stunned to the spot as they exchanged glances. For the first time, they seemed to realize how far they'd neglected me. Once, I had always been their priority, and they would drop everything to answer my questions, no matter how busy they were."Have we been… neglecting Madie?" Joshua murmured in a low voice.
