Chapter 1

"Don't be afraid, Madie. We're here."

The underground auction house was in chaos. I was barely hanging on, lying in the arms of my fiance, Joshua Moore.

"Who did this to you? Tell me, and I'll tear them apart." His voice was hoarse and raw. Each word was forced out like it tore his throat.

My brother, Daxon Smyth, stood close with his eyes full of concern.

I greedily clung to the warmth and sense of security I hadn't felt for so long. And just before the darkness swallowed me whole, I gathered the last ounce of my strength to grip their clothes.

I thought I was holding onto salvation.

When I woke up in the ICU three days later, I heard Joshua's voice amidst a daze. "They went too far, and that nail shattered her spine. If we'd been just a step too late, Madie would've ended up paralyzed now."

Daxon replied, "It's just a vertebra, and it's not like I had a choice. She'll never know her place if she doesn't learn her lesson.

"Ciara is my true sister. She's suffered out there for over 20 years, so Madie shouldn't have fought her.

"Don't worry. She'll never know we were involved. I've shut down the underground auction house, and it's enough of a cover like we avenged her."

His light, unbothered voice froze the blood in my veins. Though I'd jolted awake, I kept my eyes shut and held my breath.

So the torment and the near-death experience I had gone through had been their doing all along.

Two decades of sibling love and ten years of vows and promises turned out to be the cruelest, most vicious lie I'd ever heard.

When the door opened, a doctor walked in and interrupted their conversation. "Mr. Smyth and Mr. Moore, Ms. Smyth isn't in an optimistic condition. Her third lumbar vertebra is shattered, and we stabilized it with a pedicle screw.

"Luckily, the nerves weren't damaged, but she won't be able to do anything strenuous again. It'd be best if you could get her a wheelchair."

After the doctor left, I fought to control my trembling body. After all, I was only 20 years old, and the weight of his words was too much to bear.

Silent tears slipped from the corner of my eyes, but Joshua and Daxon paid no notice.

I heard Daxon on the phone with his assistant. "For Ciara's birthday party, have Madie's outfit made like a maid uniform. Make sure she doesn't outshine Ciara, understood?"

When Daxon ended the call, Joshua hesitatingly asked, "Daxon, isn't that too much? Madie's already hurt, and she might not take it if she's humiliated at the birthday party.

"You know how ruthless those rich kids could be, and things might get really tough for her."

I could feel a hand brush my cheek and wipe away a tear.

Daxon's voice softened with pity, yet every word he said cut deep. "I know it'll hurt her, but she's been with the Smyths for too long. Ciara won't feel secure if we don't do it.

"It's just making Madie kneel to put on Ciara's shoes, and I told them to make sure her outfit isn't exactly like a maid's. She needs to learn her place now, so it'll hurt less in the long run.

"Besides, she has us. We'll make it up to her after the birthday party, and she won't be around the Smyth family much to care about the rest of the rich kids. We'll pave her path and keep her close, and her world only needs to fit the two of us."

After Daxon's voice died away, a long silence followed before Joshua finally responded nonchalantly with a brief answer, "You're right."

In that moment, the pain was so unbearable that I could barely breathe.

During those days when I had been abducted in the black market, I'd repeatedly dialed their number for help.

Through endless beatings and humiliation, I'd gripped onto hope, only to be met with deeper despair and the hollow tone of calls that'd never been picked up.

I had always thought it was just an unlucky coincidence. But now, I understand that they were never my salvation; they were my hell.

"Outsider?"I laughed when I heard that word. They had also called me that when Ciara came back.Only this time, I held up my phone to Daxon. The screen showed the plummeting candlestick chart of Smyth Corporation's stock."I've shorted Smyth Corporation. It's bankrupt now."Then, I turned to Joshua and coldly added, "The Moores will follow soon."They blanked out and stared at me with dazed expressions before their faces twisted in anguish."Why, Madie? We stood by you for 20 years, so why are you destroying us for an outsider? Is he really that important?"I shot them an icy look and snapped back, "He's my husband, the man who'll walk through life and death with me. And who are you?"They exchanged glances in silence. Then, it struck them. Who were they, really? A housemate who'd stayed under the same roof with me by accident, but pushed me into hell. A fiance who'd betrayed me and slept with another woman in front of my face. Now, they were nothing.I didn't wait for the

"Home?" I muttered. Staring at Daxon's outstretched hand, I softly repeated the word before a faint smile curled up at my lips. There was no hatred or bitterness in that smile, only cold detachment."Are you talking about the home that nearly left me paralyzed?"Mr. Smyth, I'm aware who rules that home now. But here, I'm the one in command. So, either stand quietly as witnesses or leave."Panic flared in Daxon's and Joshua's eyes. "Madie, you've found out, haven't you?" Daxon's voice shook.I responded with a cold sneer, "Didn't it occur to you that I might learn the truth, after you threw me into the auction house to be turned into an anthropodermic fan?"Mr. Moore, tell me. Did you and Mrs. Moore enjoy yourselves that night?"At my words, Joshua's knees buckled, and he collapsed onto the floor. With tears brimming in his eyes, he tried to explain that he hadn't known or realized that masked beauty was me. But I refused to listen to a word he said. They kept claiming ignora

It wasn't until Joshua and Daxon saw the Felton family crest that they realized the man who'd taken me was the reclusive head of the Feltons, Elliott Felton.Everything I'd said that day was true. I'd never meant to marry Joshua, and my wedding gown had never been for their eyes."I'm going to bring Madie back. A man like Mr. Felton can't possibly love her," Daxon firmly announced."I'm coming, too." Joshua got up beside him. Their arrogant selves were convinced that a renowned family like the Feltons could never accept a "broken" woman like me. They told themselves that Elliott's attention and love toward me were nothing more than a whim.Deep down, they ridiculously believed that after ripping away his "mask", I could return under their control. But they never realized that they'd be facing judgment at the dinner party. Thus, they booked tickets bound for Jamborough.…Meanwhile, Elliott dipped a brush into pigment mixed with herbs and traced it over the scars on my back wit

Joshua and Daxon shot to their feet. Finally, they remembered the vacant, lifeless eyes I'd had when dragged back from the black market. The cold, unbending look I had when they tore my wedding gown and tossed me half-clothed into the garden finally crossed their mind.It hadn't been resentment but utter despair.A belated wave of realization crashed over them, dragged them under, and left them gasping for air. Then, they stormed into the villa as if they had lost their minds. With a loud thud, Daxon kicked Ciara's door wide open, and the smug smile on her face froze in place."Why did you do that to Madie? Why did you lie to us?" Joshua's voice broke with pain. For a moment, she faltered at the sight of his bloodshot eyes. Then, she slipped back into her usual fragility and pitiful look."Daxon, Josh, let me explain. It was Madie. She started it," Ciara refuted.Daxon's hand struck hard across her face and sent her sprawling. "Explain? What more is there to explain? Are you

Daxon and Joshua scoured the city for a whole day, only to return empty-handed.Dragging their exhausted bodies back to the villa, they'd barely entered the house when they noticed the swarm of workers busying around. After asking around, they learned that Ciara had ordered every surveillance camera around the villa destroyed. Sensing something off, they barged into the monitoring room and pulled up the backups. On the screens, image by image, Ciara's mask was stripped away. All the so-called rivalries and fights for affection had been her one-person show, and I'd been innocent all along. The footage showed how she'd tossed the crystal music box to the ground on purpose. With despair in my eyes, I'd looked at the screen, straight through time, as if condemning them. That was when they remembered how much the music box meant to me."There's another surveillance camera in Ciara's room," Daxon muttered. They'd installed it for fear that Ciara might pick on me, but they'd never bot

That day, I tightened my grip on Elliott's hand and stopped him from doing anything.Daxon and Joshua returned after a full week away of fun trips and surprises with Ciara. When they learned that I'd been taken away, both froze in disbelief.Daxon's eyes were bloodshot as he seized the butler, William Stone, by the collar. "When did this happen? Why wasn't I informed?"Joshua's expression was terrifyingly grave, while the shocked William was on the verge of tears. "Mr. Smyth, you said not to disturb you while with Ms. Ciara. And since Mr. Moore is marrying her and despises Ms. Madie, we dared not interrupt you both for anything that had to do with Ms. Madie…"Both men were stunned to the spot as they exchanged glances. For the first time, they seemed to realize how far they'd neglected me. Once, I had always been their priority, and they would drop everything to answer my questions, no matter how busy they were."Have we been… neglecting Madie?" Joshua murmured in a low voice.
