Chapter 4

Author: Chill-Free Coffee
Tears silently slipped down my cheeks. I already knew that Rex, Dad, and Jonah had always been on Lisa's side. I was ready to walk away from them all.

But when those filthy truths came spilling from Lisa's mouth, it still felt like something had sunk its teeth into my chest, tearing me open until I could barely breathe.

"Do you really think Mom died just because she gave birth to you?"

As Lisa spoke, she pulled a cloth bundle from inside her pocket. Inside were dozens of silver needles.

My breath hitched.

What was she getting at?

"When you were born, Dad and Jonah wouldn't stop holding you. They kept going on about how you looked just like Mom. They said they'd give you the softest cloaks in the pack, the sweetest berries, and the best of everything."

Suddenly, her voice rose an octave, dripping with spite. "Why? Before you came along, I was their one and only! That night, I snuck into Mom's cabin and put out all the coals.

"I wanted to know if they would still love you the same way if Mom didn't make it through the night."

It felt like thunder struck my skull, leaving cracks in its wake. I started shaking all over. So Mom's death hadn't been some tragic accident during labor.

Lisa, just five years old at the time, had already been capable of something so cruel.

"See?" Lisa grinned wider, flashing those fangs of hers. "They blamed you for everything, cast you out, and handed me all their love. It's just the way I wanted it to be."

"Lisa, aren't you afraid I'll tell Dad and Jonah everything?"

My voice shook so badly that I could barely speak.

I used to think she was just a spoiled brat. But I now saw her for what she really was—a venomous snake.

"So what if you do?" Lisa let out a low, chilling laugh. She grabbed one of the silver needles. "They'll just think you've lost your mind from jealousy."

I felt the cold sting of the needle sink into my arm. She went straight for the softest spots, jabbing one after another. Every puncture landed deep, sharp pain shooting straight to my bones.

I screamed, throwing every last ounce of strength I had into breaking free. The vines around my wrists finally snapped.

The moment I hit the floor, I curled in on myself, arms wrapped tight around my belly, my back pressed flat against the cold floor. I couldn't let anything happen to the pup.

Through the blinding pain, I heard Lisa shriek and drop to the floor, clutching her wrist like it'd been shattered.

The door slammed open, and Rex came rushing in.

"Rex, don't be mad at Lily." Lisa sobbed, her eyes red and brimming with tears. "I hurt her by accident, so she got mad and pushed me…"

Rex's brows pulled together at once. He turned to me with a look full of disapproval. "Lily, how could you lay a hand on Lisa?"

I tried to speak, but a sharp cramp tore through my belly, so brutal that it sent a wave of darkness over my vision. I couldn't get a single word out.

Rex didn't even notice how pale I'd gone. He bent down, scooped Lisa up, and started for the door.

"I'm taking Lisa to the healer," he said.

I didn't move until his footsteps disappeared beyond the cabin. Then, I pushed myself up, using the stone wall to steady myself.

My hands were shaking as I pulled the silver needles out of my arm, one by one, and smeared some salve to stop the bleeding.

I stared out the doorway into the dark, heavy night.

It was already the second day. There was only one more to go.

Once the Moon Pact took effect, I'd leave with my pup and never set foot in this blood-soaked, lie-ridden place again.

Lisa's lies were the reason Rex believed her to be his savior instead of me. And that was what finally made me walk away for good. The truth hit him like a punch to the gut. His bloodshot eyes brimmed with a grief that looked ready to shatter him.Only now did he realize that Lisa's story about her wolf growing weak was a lie. Her tears? Faked. Even the part about her saving his life had been made up.But he fell for every bit of it. He'd been in the dark for so long, and in the end, he was the one who drove me away."Find Lily! Now!" Rex yelled, flying out of the cabin like he'd lost his mind.Dad and Jonah were hot on his heels, the three of them tearing down the edge of Black Forest, scrambling after whatever trail I left behind.Off in the distance, they spotted a familiar figure standing right where the forest gave way to the barren plain."Lily!"Dad was the first to bolt over, tears running down his lined face. "We know the truth now, every bit of it! I was blind back th

Jonah's eyes were red as he stared Lisa down. "You did it, didn't you? You're the one who killed Mom!"His voice broke, caught between grief and rage. He couldn't tell if it was the pain of losing Mom, or the sick truth they'd just overheard from behind the door.Perhaps it was both. His tangled emotions pulled so tight that he could hardly draw a breath.Dad stepped in and slapped Lisa hard across the face. The blow sent her stumbling backward, slamming into the stone wall.He roared, "We heard every damn word! You played the sweet child for years and had us all fooled! We put Lily through hell because of you! You're a heartless monster, Lisa!"That was when panic hit her. Fear flickered in her eyes. Lisa hadn't expected Dad and Jonah to be here, let alone hear everything she said. But in the very next breath, she pulled on a mask of wounded innocence, tears spilling down her cheeks."Dad, Jonah, what are you even talking about? You think I killed Mom? You think I was playing s

Rex pushed the wooden door open and stepped in, only to find the cabin empty.I wasn't on the bed. The backpack that used to sit in the corner was gone, and so was the cloak I always wore. It was like I'd been erased, like I'd never set foot in here at all.Rex stood frozen in place. Moonlight filtered through the window and fell on his face, laying bare the sickly pallor of his skin and the hopelessness in his eyes."Lily…"He dropped to his knees, yanking at his hair with both hands as a ragged scream tore from his throat and echoed through the empty cabin. "Lily! Come back! Please, just come back!"But all that answered him was the wind howling outside and the cold, distant moon hanging high above.Rex stayed on his knees, trembling, wrecked by a pain too deep for words."Rex!"Lisa rushed in, dropping to the floor beside him. The moment she saw the torment etched across his face, she finally understood what had happened. She reached out, trying to pull him into a comfortin

The door slammed open in the middle of the night. Freezing wind came howling in, flinging bits of snow all over the room. Then, a sharp slap rang out, cracking through the air like a gunshot.Dad's voice exploded right after. "Lily! Lisa was just trying to help. She put some soothing clay on you, yet you shoved her to the floor? Have you forgotten she's unwell? She can't handle even the slightest shock!"My cheek was on fire, but what hit harder was the cold settling deep in my chest.I looked at Dad and Jonah through tear-filled eyes. They were both glaring at me, furious. If they ever found out that it was Lisa who caused Mom's death, would they even feel a hint of regret for how terribly they were treating me now?"First, you got your mom killed, and now you're picking on weak, sickly Lisa? What the hell is wrong with you?"Dad's voice was ice-cold and merciless, like he meant to gut me with every word.He raised his hand again, ready to hit me, but Jonah stepped between us

When Rex handed me the basket, I felt a sharp sting of bitterness rise in my chest. He was only being sweet to keep me close, just so Lisa could take my wolf without a hitch.I picked up a blackberry and slowly popped it into my mouth."Lily? Rex? Are you guys still awake?"Just then, Lisa pushed the door open. She was holding a ceramic jar filled with pale green herbal clay, and her smile was unusually warm."Lily, since you're carrying a pup, your skin must be dry and itchy. I asked the healer for a recipe and whipped up a soothing herbal clay for you. Just rub it all over your body. It'll smooth your skin and help you relax."I frowned, already set on saying no. We were never that close, definitely not enough for me to let her lay a hand on me."Lily, do you not like the clay I made?"Lisa's eyes went glassy right away. She looked over at Rex, her voice sounding hurt. "Rex, I know you care about Lily, but I promise I don't mean anything by it. If she doesn't want it, I'll thr
