Chapter 6

ผู้เขียน: Liora
Jasper seemed oddly insistent about the cake as he tried to coax, "Janice, just try a little. It'll be fine. If you really don't feel well, Casey and I are both here. We'll take you to the hospital right away."

Janice's smile turned stiff.

But to cover it up, she forced herself to look like an obedient, well-behaved lady.

She picked up a spoon and tasted each type of cake on the table, one at a time, as if she were completing a task.

After finishing, she pressed a hand to her stomach and said softly, "I'm not feeling too well. I'll go upstairs and lie down for a bit."

She turned and headed up the stairs.

I floated quietly behind her.

Once inside the room, she immediately shut the door and began rummaging through her drawers and luggage in a panic, nearly tearing apart the whole room.

Then there was the soft sound of the door being pushed open behind her.

"Janice, what are you looking for?"

She spun around and froze at the sight of Jasper and Casey standing in the doorway. Her

Before Janice could finish speaking, Jasper finally snapped and struck her hard.A bruise instantly appeared on her face. Her whole body trembled, and her lips turned pale. Her eyes still burned with defiance and resentment, but she finally realized that things were completely out of her control. No amount of acting pitiful could turn the tide back in her favor. She stopped resisting and instead clung timidly to their sides, but neither Casey nor Jasper spared her another glance.Jasper gave her no room to speak as he hit her again. That night, the villa rang with her screams. They punished her using the same cruel methods they'd once used on me.Janice was locked in a dark room and denied food and water. Her phone was confiscated, and she was subjected to the same "household discipline" they'd inflicted on me, only doubled. That was how they chose to express their remorse for how they had wronged me.But I didn't need it.No amount of punishment on Janice could ever undo th

Jasper hadn't planned on answering the call, but as if possessed, his finger pressed the button and put it on speaker. "Hello, Ms. Carter. I'm just following up. Are you still considering the plot at the cemetery you were interested in? A 5% deposit will reserve it for you."There was no response."Ms. Carter? Hello?"The moment the word "cemetery" was spoken, Jasper's expression looked as though he'd been punched hard. His voice trembled. "So I didn't mishear that day at all. The day she went to arrange cremation services… She was looking at burial plots."Casey's voice caught in his throat. His lips turned pale, and he murmured almost inaudibly, "She really was preparing for the end. She didn't buy the plot because she didn't have the money…"His voice cracked, and he began to sob.Casey snatched the phone and practically shouted to the person on the other end. "I'll buy the plot! Reserve it now! We owe her so much. This is the only thing we can do for her."They finally de

When they appeared at the door, Martha didn't seem surprised at all. She didn't even bother to look up at them.Casey was already on the verge of losing control. He rushed forward and grabbed Martha by the collar. "Where's my sister? Give me back my sister!"Jasper quickly pulled him back and said anxiously, "Excuse me, is my wife, Lisa Carter, here? I'm her husband. There are things we need to talk through face to face."Martha didn't respond. She simply gave them a cold look for a moment before turning around and silently leading them away. They followed her through several quiet corridors. Behind each door, the cold air grew heavier and heavier.Until finally, a door to the cold chamber was slowly pushed open. There lay a body, covered in a white cloth. They froze. At that moment, it was as if the air had been sucked out of the room."This… What kind of joke is this?" Casey staggered forward and tore away the cloth. The moment he saw the face underneath, his expression turn

Back in college, Jasper and Casey once believed Janice's accusation that I was buying drugs and immediately cut off my living expenses. I often went hungry, living meal to meal.To avoid fainting in class, I worked part-time in the cafeteria, exchanging labor for a hot meal.Martha Hamel, one of the older cafeteria workers, always looked after me. She'd secretly slip extra pieces of meat onto my plate. She had a daughter who was one year younger than me, who died by suicide after years of bullying.Martha left the campus with only a symbolic compensation payment.I followed the address she once gave me and found her small house in the suburbs. When the door opened, I asked softly, "Mrs. Hamel, after I die, could you call the crematorium for me?"Her eyes instantly turned red.She brought out a bottle of foundation and light-colored lipstick. Then, she carefully unfolded a brand-new dress her daughter never got the chance to wear, gently helping me get dressed.I sat on a woode

Just as I stepped out of the yard, Casey caught up to me. He pulled a few crumpled bills out from his pocket. "Here's 300 dollars. It's enough for food and a place to stay for a few days. Just come home and apologize once you've calmed down. Everything will be fine."Three hundred dollars. For Janice, that probably wasn't even enough for an afternoon snack. At that moment, Janice came running up behind him and gently took the money from his hands. Smiling at me, she said, "Lisa, we're all family. They're just too emotional right now. They'd never really throw you out. Just come home when you run out of money and get hungry."Hearing that, Casey tucked the money back into his pocket. And so, with my sick and frail body, I dragged myself out of the neighborhood. I used the last of the money I had earned from part-time jobs to book a cheap motel on the city's outskirts. That night, I curled up alone in the motel's narrow bed and fell asleep holding myself. Before Janice came into o
