Chapter 4

Autor: Jovie
I turned down Raffaello's offer, but on the day of Sofia's concert, he still dragged me along.

Lorenzo was, no doubt, irritated.

"Daddy, why are you taking her along? This is Sofia's important day! What if she spoils everything?"

Raffaello patted Lorenzo's head, soothingly saying, "I'm here. She won't dare to bully Sofia."

The temperature up on the snowy mountains was very cold. My injuries had not fully recovered yet, so I was also having a little bit of a fever.

I was so cold I could barely speak, let alone do whatever imaginary cruelty they accused me of.

However, this was not what Sofia wanted. She deliberately came up to me and said, "Grace, listen to this. Doesn't it sound familiar?"

I carefully listen to the music. Each drumbeat struck straight against my chest, stirring memories I had long buried.

Of course, I was familiar with the music.

Before my vocal cords got destroyed, I was a rather well-known singer in New Wark City. The piece that Sofia was about to perform that day was a song that I had composed for Raffaello and Lorenzo.

Before I could release the music, however, my vocal cords were damaged by the virus, and everything was shelved.

Seeing how stunned I was, Sofia said smugly in a whisper, "You're covered with injuries. Do you think you're good enough for Raffaello, Grace? Your existence will only humiliate them.

"If you know any better, you'll leave them once and for all. Your husband, your son, your wealth, will end up just like this song. It'll all be mine."

I frowned and looked at her with contempt. I grabbed her wrist, saying, "Sofia, you monster! How dare you play tricks like this! I'll expose you for who you really are!"

She flashed me a malicious smile.

Then, the next second, she screamed in pain. "Ahh! My hand! It hurts!"

A strong force knocked me back. Raffaello appeared from behind me and went up to urgently check on Sofia.

"Raffaello, don't take it out on Grace. Her voice is damaged, so she can't sing anymore… I shouldn't have invited her to my concert. It'll only dredge sad memories."

Raffaello kicked me right in the chest as I fell into the pile of snow.

My lungs started to hurt; it felt like a thousand needles pricking them all at once. It was so painful that I could barely breathe. I could even taste blood.

"I-I grabbed her gently! How could it hurt? Also, that song–"

Before I could say anything, Raffaello stomped on my hand. I heard a loud crack as my bones broke.

The next second, a sharp jab of pain coursed through my entire body, and I screamed.

I could not speak at all.

Raffaello didn't let go of his foot. He snarled, "You really should just die, Grace. Sofia's hands are what she works with. If anything happens, I'll cut yours off to give it to her!"

Sofia kept yelling about how much it hurt, so she could not proceed with the concert.

Raffaello called the helicopter to get them down the mountain. "You need to get your hand checked. Once we're down the mountain, I'll take you to the hospital."

He carefully guided Sofia into the helicopter as Lorenzo worriedly followed suit.

I was once again left behind as the helicopter could only fit three people besides the pilot.

Before entering the helicopter, Raffaello said to me icily, "You'll have to give up your spot to Sofia. Treat it as repayment for what you did to her. You get down the mountain on your own."

The helicopter flew into the sky, getting smaller and smaller until it was just a dot.

I could feel another asthma attack coming. Breathing got harder for me, and I fell to the snow listlessly. I wanted to scream for help, but I could not make a sound at all as the sound of the helicopter overpowered me.

Suddenly, a thunderous boom rumbled.

An avalanche.

Guests screamed and scattered. The experienced Underboss shouted instructions, leading people to safety.

I was forgotten.

Snow poured down like a white tide.

Every breath I forced into my lungs felt sharp as ice shards, stabbing deep into my chest.

Just before the snow buried me, I pulled out my phone with my uninjured hand.

I wanted to send Raffaello a message to call for help–but what I saw was a photo that Sofia had sent.

In the photo, Raffaello was gently holding her injured hand, blowing on it to soothe her pain.

Lorenzo had taken off his coat to keep her warm.

I chuckled bitterly and gave up the thought of asking for rescue. I let the snow bury me in.

My breathing got lighter as my eyelids grew heavier.

Goodbye, Raffaello. We would never see each other again in this lifetime.

Raffaello went through page by page, until he saw how I distracted the rival family to save him, and how I got asthma by saving Lorenzo. He finally understood why I was not around when they needed me the most."You were much more seriously injured than we were. You… You had asthma because you tried to save us…"Here I was, believing Sofia, that you were going on a date with Giorgio. I was mad at you. I didn't even look into it and immediately accused you of running away with other men. I really deserve to die…"Tears blurred Raffaello's view. After he calmed down a little, he took a few swigs of alcohol before mustering up the courage to continue. He read about how I had to cut the tip of my tongue for the incense, yet they complained about how much it stank. He read about how I researched cooking the best foods to nourish them back to health, only for them to complain about how disgusting it was…Ever since I rescued them, all my grievances had finally come to light.Raffaello

In the footage, Raffaello saw how Sofia framed me. He also found out that Sofia had stolen my song.He felt so helpless, yet overcome with rage at that moment. He wrapped his hands around Sofia's neck and threw her against the wall, snapping hysterically, "What kind of vendetta do you have against Grace? What did she do to deserve this?!"When Lorenzo and I were in the hospital, you told us she had run away with another man, which was why she didn't turn up. Did you lie to us about that, too?"That night, when you came to our house to cook for us to apologize to her… Did you also lie about her pushing you?"After losing his trust in Sofia, he started to question everything that happened before.Seeing how there were no more chances of salvaging the situation, Sofia dropped all pretenses and came clean."I just can't stand the fact that she's more talented than I am!"How hard is it to sing? It takes effort to practice the piano! Why should she be more famous than me? Why could s

After that, Raffaello no longer received calls about me.Just when he thought that his threats about taking them to court worked, the New Wark City police contacted him. This time, he was no longer as aloof as before. All that was left was shock and terror. No one came to collect the body, but the temperature grew warmer, and they could not just store my body at the villa. So, the owners of the villa had no choice but to send my body back to New Wark City. When Raffaello entered the morgue and saw that disfigured body, he could not bear to come closer. He looked away and kept asking the police, "My wife was seen with her childhood sweetheart. How could this be her? Do you have proof? This body could barely be recognized. How do you know it's my wife?"I don't believe this! Grace hired you–you're an actor, I know it! Even now, she's pulling all the stops to trick me!"Raffaello shrieked hysterically, but in the end, the autopsy report silenced him.The police had done an autops

Lorenzo slowly recuperated in a matter of days. He was finally conscious and could eat on his own. However, he would often look around the empty room and ask, "Where's Mommy? I've been sick for so long. Why hasn't she come to visit me once?"Raffaello was busy with the family business, so it was only Sofia next to him. She would tell him, over and over, "Your Mommy no longer wants you. Just like before, she's gone with another man, to be someone else's mother."Lorenzo's gaze darkened. He scoffed and said, "She doesn't want me? Well, I don't want her!"Looking at Sofia's smug face, I was so angry that I pounced at her, wanting to shred her into pieces, but my hands merely went through her.A month after my death, Raffaello could no longer take it anymore. He threw away my belongings at home and even blocked my contact. He yelled, "Since she doesn't want to come back anymore, then don't come back!"Sofia, as usual, was next to him, consoling him, "Grace doesn't appreciate you at

When Raffaello returned to the hotel at the foot of the mountain, the room was pitch black. Not a single person was around. His heart felt a little empty, and his right eyelid twitched for a good while. He looked around and could not find me. Even his pacing got a little frantic.Lorenzo looked worried as well. He anxiously tugged at Raffaello's sleeve. "Daddy, it's late. Where could Mommy be? Why don't you give her a call?"My phone was buried with my body under meters of snow.Raffaello had called me more than a dozen times, but no one picked up. He looked more worried as time went by.Sofia merely gave him a comforting smile. "Raffaello, Lorenzo, don't worry. When we were in the helicopter, I think I saw Grace entering the Don of the Jackson family's car…"Upon hearing that, Raffaello's worries instantly turned into rage. "The bones in her hands have been broken, yet she still has the time to seduce her old lover! I really have to give it to Grace."From now on, I no longer
