Chapter 4

作者: Stupid
In a daze, I let my mother lead me to a corner.

Then a figure caught my attention.

It was Yates.

He had once promised me he'd never drink again, yet now he was smiling as he downed one drink after another for Quintessa.

He had always had a sensitive stomach.

Once, he'd ended up in the hospital with severe stomach cramps, and I'd cried so hard I could barely catch my breath.

He'd promised me then that he would never drink again. His friends had even teased him afterward for being so whipped.

I watched him down one drink after another.

It wasn't long before he clutched his stomach, his face turning pale.

Without thinking, I rushed over and grabbed his arm.

"Have you forgotten what you promised me?"

He looked at my worried face, guilt and gratitude flickering in his eyes.

"I'm sorry, Lily. I..."

"Don't talk."

I took a deep breath and, without stopping to say goodbye to anyone, led him out of the venue.

By the time we got to the hospital, he had already passed out.

The doctor put him on an IV, and I was just about to leave to pay the bill when he grabbed me by the wrist.

"Don't go..."

Hearing him say that, I couldn't help but smile.

I lowered my head to comfort him, only to hear him suddenly call out Quintessa's name.

"Don't go, Tessa."

In that instant, I felt as though I'd been struck by lightning.

I stood there, frozen.

It felt as though something had clenched around my heart.

I pried his hand off me, paid the bill, and drove straight home.

"Tessa's pregnant now. There's no way we can let her have an abortion!"

My hand was on the doorknob, but before I could turn it, I heard Hailey's voice from inside.

"What if Yates divorces Lily and marries Tessa instead?"

She looked to my parents for their opinion as she spoke.

My mother sighed.

"I suppose so. Even if Lily gets divorced, she'll still have her dad and me. But Tessa has no one to rely on. It would be better for her to marry Yates."

I could hardly believe my ears.

In just a few casual sentences, they had decided my future for me.

I froze in place. Then I heard a soft chuckle behind me.

"Lillian, what's the point of waking up?"

I turned around and saw Quintessa looking at me provocatively.

"In the end, you were still replaced, weren't you?"

I forced myself to stay composed and shot back, "A replacement will always be a replacement. How long do you think this happiness you stole will last?"

My words seemed to hit a nerve with her.

Her expression changed, and she immediately fired back.

"Then just wait and see. In the end, you'll find out whether that happiness belongs to you or me!"

With that, she grabbed my hand and shoved me hard.

A scream rang out as she tumbled straight down the stairs. Blood began pooling between her legs.

The conversation inside came to a stop.

The three of them rushed out through the door, only to find Quintessa in a terrible state.

My father slapped me hard across the face.

Hailey shoved me, and I fell hard onto the floor.

My father pointed at me.

"What the hell were you doing?"

I opened my mouth, wanting to explain, but they didn't give me a chance.

My mother gave me one final warning.

"If anything happens to Tessa, don't bother coming back to this house!"

Tears filled my eyes.

I watched my father scoop Quintessa up into his arms and rush into the car with her.

Hailey and my mother didn't spare me so much as a glance.

Something inside me finally snapped.

I didn't know how long I had been sitting there when the wind came whipping at me, rain lashing against my face.

I let out a bitter laugh.

"System, I don't want to stay here anymore.

"I want to go back to the mission world."

Yates lowered his eyes, his voice cold."When I brought you home, I told you that you were nothing more than Lily's replacement. Who gave you the right to treat her like that?"With that, he kicked the chair aside and punched himself in frustration.Quintessa glanced around the room.Seeing that no one was willing to help her, she suddenly burst into laughter."A replacement?"Didn't you all end up getting Lillian killed because of this replacement?"Her chest heaved as she pointed at everyone in the room."What makes any of you so much better? Before you point the finger at me, maybe take a good look at yourselves! If you hadn't all silently allowed it, how could I have ever gotten her killed?"The room fell silent.Hailey said impatiently, "Enough! Don't disturb my grandson. If you want to argue, take it outside!"The moment she said that, my mother's anger flared."Shut up! The Foster family's grandson deserved to die. Who's going to pay for my daughter’s death?"The moment Hailey h

But there was no one left to answer my mother.Just then, as I floated in midair, I heard the System's voice."Truth Revealed has been successfully redeemed. Would you like to use it?"As a spirit, I could no longer shed tears. All I could do was respond in a hoarse voice. The next second, my father's phone chimed. He received a file bundle and opened it numbly. What appeared before his eyes was the scene of Quintessa falsely accusing me of pushing her at the doorway before staging her own fall.Hearing the commotion, everyone nearby gathered around.Yates's pupils constricted. He dragged the video back to the beginning and watched it again and again in disbelief.Hailey had been making snide remarks just moments earlier. But the moment she saw Quintessa instructing Annie to frame me and urging her to jump into the river, she could no longer sit still. She wasn't a good mother-in-law.But she was a good grandmother.Watching her beloved granddaughter nearly drown, her lips quivered. I lay on the ground and kept vomiting blood. The System had blocked out the pain, but I could still taste the heavy, metallic tang of blood in my mouth. It was nauseating. The man wanted to make sure I wouldn't survive, so he tried to run me over again. The System reminded me."Lillian, get up and run forward."I didn't understand why, but I still forced myself to my feet and dragged my leg forward as I ran.A blinding light suddenly engulfed me.The next moment, I was hit hard again and knocked to the ground.Seeing this, the man nearby quickly turned the car around and fled.Blood splashed into my eyes.Through my blurred, blood-red vision, I saw my father rush out of the car in a panic.I saw Yates rush over from the passenger seat, his legs giving way as he dropped to his knees in front of me.The memory of me in a vegetative state overlapped with who I was now.Yates tremblingly took my hand."How could you..."How could you be here?"Even my father, who was usually so composed, h

I stood there, stunned.I stared at Annie in disbelief. She cried so naturally that there wasn't the slightest hint she was lying.I instinctively denied it."I didn't. What are you talking about, Ann..."Quintessa pulled her into her arms, and I caught sight of the jade bangle that had once belonged to me on her wrist."Don’t worry, Ann. How could I not love you? Just don't ever do something so reckless again. What if something had happened to you?"Hailey was moved by how worried she was.It only made me look even more unreasonable by comparison. She walked over and slapped me hard across the face.My father stood in front of me and let out a cold snort."She was willing to stage a car accident and put her own life at risk. And you still expect her to care about her children?"In a fit of rage, he flung the transfer records at me."Lillian, is this how I raised you?"Did I raise you to be this jealous and petty?"The papers fluttered to the ground. I bent down and picked up one of th

When I woke up, my mother was holding my hand, tears blurring her eyes."Lily, you scared me half to death..."I thought you weren't going to wake up."She was crying, but I felt nothing.I pulled my hand from hers and looked at Yates, who was standing beside the bed."You want a divorce, don't you?"He couldn't bring himself to meet my eyes. Instead, he turned his head away and said, "I've already wronged you. I can't do the same to Tessa."Hearing that, I laughed out loud."System, I've decided how I'm going to leave this world."I'm going to die at their hands."Back then, I had fought tooth and nail to make it back, all just to see these people who had long since forgotten about me.I found the whole thing almost laughable. If I'd known this was how things would turn out, I should never have come back.I didn't respond to what Yates said about the divorce. He simply tucked my hand under the covers and tried to comfort me."I'm sorry, Lily. Once you've recovered, I'll take care of t

The System's response came almost immediately."Okay. I'll arrange an accident for you so you can return to the mission world."But it'll take some time."I nodded, wiped away my tears, and shakily got to my feet.Suddenly, everything went black.I clutched my head and passed out. When I woke up again, I was in the guest room.My mother's promise to have someone clear out the third floor had been put on hold because of Quintessa. Her baby had survived, but she was still extremely weak.My mother sat on the couch, clearly displeased with me."I need to clear out the third floor for Tessa's baby. Your dad and I bought you a house of your own, so pack your things and move there."Hearing that, I let out a bitter laugh."So, Mom, you're kicking me out?"Hearing that, my mother's face went pale.A flicker of compassion crossed her eyes. But she quickly thought of Quintessa, who was still recovering."You can move back after Tessa gives birth."She studied my face before adding, "Tessa is ca
