THE PRICE OF SHELTER

AUTHOR’S POV

By the time Elena finally summoned him, Kaiden had spent nearly three hours waiting.

Three hours.

He had commanded thousands of warriors. He had negotiated with rival Alphas, settled disputes between powerful families, and made decisions that determined the fate of entire territories. Before the Ashen Plague, few people would have dared keep him waiting without a convincing explanation.

Yet he had spent the afternoon standing in a crowded yard, watching Haven's guards come and go while Elena attended to everyone except him.

He had nearly lost his patience twice.

The first time was when Garrick informed him that the supplies brought by the Blackthorn survivors had to be counted before they could be distributed.

The second was when a guard told him that Elena was still examining the injured and would speak with him when she was finished.

Each time, Rowan had reminded him that they were guests.

Kaiden was beginning to despise that word.

Guests.

He had never imagined a day when he would be forced to stand outside another person's door and wait for permission to speak.

Yet that was exactly where he found himself when a young sentry approached him.

"Elena is ready to see you."

Kaiden straightened.

"Where is she?"

"Come with me."

The guard led him toward a large building near the center of Haven. It appeared to have once been a communal hall, but the interior had been divided into several working spaces. A table near the entrance held medical records and supply lists, while maps covered part of the wall. Beyond the open doorway, Kaiden could hear people discussing repairs and patrol schedules.

Elena stood beside the central table, speaking with Garrick.

She wore dark trousers, a plain shirt, and a leather belt holding a small medical pouch. Her hair was tied back, revealing the familiar silver pendant at her throat.

She looked different.

Not because her face had changed significantly, though the softness he remembered had been tempered by exhaustion and experience. It was the way she carried herself that unsettled him.

There was no hesitation in her movements. No uncertainty when she gave instructions. No nervous glance toward someone more powerful to see whether her decisions would be accepted.

She looked like a woman who knew exactly where she stood.

And everyone around her seemed to know it too.

Garrick finished speaking and left.

Elena glanced at the guard.

"Thank you. You can go."

The sentry departed, leaving the two of them alone.

For a moment, neither spoke.

Kaiden had imagined what he would say when they finally met privately. He had prepared explanations about the state of Blackthorn, the number of survivors who depended on him, and the desperate circumstances that had brought him to Haven.

Now that he stood before her, those carefully arranged words seemed inadequate.

Elena broke the silence.

"You wanted to speak with me."

"Yes."

"Then speak."

Kaiden's jaw tightened at her tone.

He had expected anger. He had expected accusations and perhaps even tears. He had not expected this cool, measured indifference, as though he were a visitor requesting information about the weather.

"My people need shelter," he began. "We have lost our territory, and the remaining survivors cannot continue traveling indefinitely. We have injured warriors, children, and elderly pack members. If we remain on the road, we risk losing more lives."

"I am aware of their condition."

"Then you understand why I need to discuss our situation with you."

"I understand why you need shelter. That does not mean Haven can accommodate everyone who arrives at its gates."

Kaiden glanced at the records on the table.

"How many people can you take?"

"That depends on how many resources they require, how much food we can spare, and whether they can contribute to the settlement without endangering the people already living here."

"You have a functioning infirmary, a defended perimeter, and organized patrols. Surely there is room for more people."

Elena's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Are you asking me, or telling me?"

The question caught him off guard.

What the hell is wrong with her? I was her mate for goodness sake!

AUTHOR’S POVFor one brief moment, she considered turning in the opposite direction. Then she reminded herself that Haven was hers to manage, and she would not alter her movements simply because he happened to be nearby."Elena," he said. She stopped at a reasonable distance."What is it?""I wanted to tell you that the meeting went well."She glanced at him."That was the purpose of the meeting.""I know.""Then you don't need to tell me."His mouth tightened, but he did not argue.Instead, he looked toward the settlement."You've built something here."Elena followed his gaze.People were lighting lamps outside their shelters. Smoke rose from the cooking fires, and somewhere near the infirmary, children were arguing over a game. The settlement was still fragile. They had too little food, too few supplies, and no guarantee that the next day would be easier. But it was alive."We're building something," she corrected. "I didn't do it alone.""Still, they trust you.""Because I give th

AUTHOR’S POV "Your decision is that everyone receives equal portions unless their needs or assigned duties require an adjustment?""Yes.""And the warriors going on the expedition receive enough food for the journey, without being given a permanent advantage over everyone else?""Correct."Kaiden turned toward Roderick."Then we will follow the ruling."Roderick stiffened."With respect, Alpha, I believe—""You have made your objection clear," Kaiden interrupted. "The settlement has reached its decision. We will not waste more time arguing over it."A flicker of surprise crossed Elena's face before she could hide it.Kaiden had accepted her ruling without trying to override it.She did not know whether to be relieved or suspicious.Perhaps he had finally realized that he could not command people here.Or perhaps he had simply decided this particular argument was not worth having.Either way, the decision stood.Elena returned to her notes."We'll prepare the expedition supplies tomor

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   THE RULES OF MY HAVEN

AUTHOR’S POV Elena had learned that the fastest way to lose control of a settlement was to let people believe the rules could be changed whenever someone powerful disliked them.Haven had survived its first months through cooperation, sacrifice, and a great deal of stubbornness. Food remained scarce. The water supply had only recently been restored, several buildings still needed repairs, and every day brought another problem that demanded attention. But Haven was standing. And Elena intended to keep it that way."Everyone should be here by now," Garrick said, placing a stack of papers on the wooden table.Elena glanced around the meeting hall. The room had once served as a dining area for the people who had lived in the abandoned settlement. Its windows were cracked, one corner of the roof leaked whenever it rained, and the long table in the middle had been repaired with mismatched pieces of wood.It was hardly a place fit for a council meeting. But they had more important things t

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   I FINALLY UNDERSTOOD

AUTHOR’S POV "Then what is the point of the bond?" he asked, his voice quieter than before.Maera's expression softened slightly."Perhaps to give two people the opportunity to choose each other. A bond may bring them together, but it cannot make the choice for them. Love without choice is only another kind of captivity."Kaiden looked down at his hands."Is there anything I can do?" he asked.Maera regarded him for a long moment."If you want answers about the connection, observe it carefully. Do not deliberately provoke it. Do not use it as an excuse to force closeness. And if either of you experiences severe pain or distress, seek help rather than pretending you can endure it.""And Elena?""Let her decide what she wants to do."Kaiden exhaled slowly. It sounded so simple. It felt almost impossible.Maera returned to her herbs, making it clear that the conversation was over."One more thing, Alpha."He paused at the door."Do not mistake regret for love. Regret often comes when we

  • Rejected Before The Apocalypse, Now I'm The Queen   I WON’T FORCE HER

AUTHOR’S POV Maera reached for a jar and moved it aside before continuing."There are old accounts of damaged bonds reacting under extreme circumstances. Most are little more than stories passed down between generations. A few describe connections that appeared dead but responded when the mates faced danger, shared intense emotions, or came into physical contact after a long separation.""So it is possible.""It is possible that something happened between you and Elena. That does not mean the bond has returned.""What else could it be?""I don't know."The bluntness of her answer irritated him."You are supposed to understand these things.""I understand enough to know when I do not have an answer." Maera folded her hands on the table. "The old accounts are incomplete. Some describe a bond stirring for a moment before disappearing again. Others speak of pain so intense that the wolves involved could barely remain near each other. There are even accounts of emotions passing between tw

For a brief, impossible moment, he had felt what Elena felt. Her fear. Her grief.
