It was a cool evening in the Greyer Pack. The sky was a deep blue, dotted with the first stars of the night. A gentle breeze rustled through the trees around the palace, carrying the scent of pine and something sweet, like blooming flowers. Inside

In Cassie's room, time seemed to slow down. She was still trying to understand what had just happened with Daisy. Daisy had asked to be friends, and Cassie, almost without thinking, She had said yes. Just a simple "sure."

“Thanks Cassie, sorry we had a rough start," Daisy had smiled, and then walked out of the room, leaving Cassie alone again.

Cassie was stunned. She sat on the edge of the huge bed, her mind racing. She went over the conversation again and again.

Was Daisy really sorry? Or was it all an act? She just couldn't figure it out. Maybe having a friend in the pack won't hurt so bad? She might also be sincerely sorry,” she thought to herself

Suddenly, a soft knock on the door interrupted her thoughts."My lady," the maid said, her voice polite and respectful.

"It's time for dinner. A young maid, dressed in a simple but elegant uniform, peeked respectfully. I'm here to take you to the dining room."

Cassie took a deep breath, trying to push aside her confusion about Daisy. Dinner. She had to face the Alphas again, and this time, it would be in a more formal setting. She stood up, smoothing down her dress.

She took another glance at the mirror.

“Perfect," she muttered to herself.

She was wearing a black silk casual dress. To her, it was the perfect choice of dress for the cool evening.

She followed the maid out of the room. The maid led her through more winding corridors, each one more grand than the last. Finally, they reached a set of large, double doors.

As the maid opened them, Cassie gasped. The room was enormous. It wasn't just a dining room; it was like a large banquet hall. Long tables stretched across the room, covered with white cloths and glittering silverware.

"Are they having some kind of banquet?" she asked the maid, her voice filled with awe.

Food of all kinds was lined up in a dazzling display: roasted meats, colorful vegetables, bowls of steaming soup, and platters of sweet-smelling desserts."No, my lady. The air was filled with the delicious aroma of spices and cooked food. Cassie had never seen anything like it.

The maid smiled gently."No, my lady. "No, my lady. This is the Alpha's dining room. They eat like this every night."

Cassie's eyes widened. Every night?

It was hard to imagine living in such luxury.

Not like the Alpha’s Palace back in her pack wasn't luxurious but this was another state.

It had the same look like the wedding banquet in her pack but here, it was just a dining room.

As she walked in, her long strides ate up the distance. Mark looked at her intensely with admiration written all over his face.

He couldn't help but notice the way her hair swayed gently with each step, or the confident smile that played on her lips. Her eyes sparkled in the sunlight, and he felt his gaze drawn to hers.

For a moment, their eyes met, and he felt a flutter in his chest. She looked away.

Cassie could feel her legs shaking in the silhouettes as she moved closer.

The hall was conditioned but she felt really hot.

The gazes on her was what she couldn't handle.

“Did I pick the wrong choice of cloth?” She wondered trying to figure out what caused the attention.

The maid led her closer to the head of the room, where Mark and Lark were standing. As they approached, the maid bowed deeply and then quietly left.

Cassie felt a bit awkward standing there alone. She wasn't sure what to do.

“Should I bow too?” She pondered. Confused on what to do, she bowed her knees slightly, about to prostrate into a bow, Lark's voice cut through.

"You shouldn't do that," Lark said, his voice cold and sharp. "You're not a maid. You're one of us now."

His words surprised Cassie. She wasn't sure if he was being sarcastic or serious.

“One of them," a sense of belonging surged into her, she couldn't help it but smile.

"Please, sit," he said, his voice kind.

Cassie sat down, feeling a little more at ease. Mark sat beside her, while Lark took the chair opposite. He was so hard to read.

Mark, on the other hand, seemed much warmer. He smiled at her and pulled out a chair for her at the head table.

Mark started a conversation, trying to make her feel comfortable."So, Cassie," he said, "tell us about your family. Where are they?”

Cassie's smile faded. The question brought back painful memories."They...they're dead," she said, her voice quiet and sober."They died in a war."

Mark's face softened with sympathy. "Oh my, I'm really sorry," he apologized.

He didn't want her to feel sad. The conversation continued, with Mark asking her about her life before she came to the Greyer Pack.

He seemed genuinely interested in getting to know her. Lark, however, didn't say anything. He was quiet and cold, focused on his meal.

He didn't look at Cassie, didn't ask her any questions. He just ate, his movements precise and controlled.

"Why is he acting this way?" Cassie thought to herself. She couldn't understand Lark's behavior. He was so different from Mark.

Despite his coldness, Cassie found herself stealing secret glances at Lark. She couldn't help but notice how handsome he was.

His sharp jawline, the strong veins in his hands, the way he chewed slowly and deliberately – everything about him was attractive to her.

She was almost drooling over him.

Suddenly, it happened. Lark looked up from his plate, and his eyes met hers. Time seemed to stop. His gaze was intense, piercing, holding hers captive. Cassie's heart started pounding heavily in her chest. She felt a strange heat spreading through her body. It was like a physical pull, a connection she couldn't explain.

  • Rejected But Elevated    Epilogue

Cassie's POVThree weeks laterThe morning Lark beat Mark in the sparring yard was the morning I knew everything was going to be okay.It had been three weeks since Alexa turned to ash in our courtyard. Three weeks, the pack slowly finding its footing again. Three weeks of Lark eating properly and sleeping properly and waking up without that carefully measured way he used to move, like he was calculating how much energy each step would cost him.I was sitting in the covered viewing area overlooking the yard when it happened. Two guards stood at either side of me. Below, a small crowd of warriors had gathered along the edges of the yard the way they always did when the Alphas trained. Nobody announced it. The word just spread the way it always did and people showed up.Mark and Lark were at the center of it all. They'd been going at it for about twenty minutes. Back and forth, neither of them giving much away. Mark was faster. He always had been. But Lark was reading him, antici

  • Rejected But Elevated    Chapter 110

Cassie's POVSmoke engulfed the entire courtyard and palace as a whole. It was choking with a pungent smell.Guards stumbled. Some went down on their knees coughing. Others swung blindly at nothing.Alot of guards had fallen unconscious after inhaling a lot of it.“What in heaven is this?” Quickly Mark tossed a face mask towards my direction. I wore it quickly and built a wall of protection around the courtyard so the smoke doesn't cause more harm. Then she walked through it.Alexa.Like the smoke was hers. Like she'd made it specifically so she could walk through it looking like that. Unhurried. Dressed simply. The crescent moon mark visible at her throat, catching what little light the smoke hadn't swallowed yet.She stopped in the middle of the courtyard and looked around slowly. Then she smiled."Did you miss me?"The twins broke through the protection wall and lunged toward her as well as the courtyard full of blinded guards.Alexa didn't even look at them. She was looking at me

  • Rejected But Elevated    Chapter 109

Cassie's POVWe got back just before noon. The pack house was moving through its usual midday noise when we rode through the gates. I had the root wrapped carefully inside my jacket the whole ride back, one hand pressed against it every time the horse moved too fast over rough ground. Mark had noticed but didn't say a word either. The ride was quiet.Lark was sitting up in bed when we walked in. He looked at the root in my hands and then at my face and whatever he saw there made him sit up straighter."Is it good?" he asked."Yeah," I said.Mark pulled up a chair and sat down while I went straight to the preparation. This time I took my time with it. No rushing. No telling myself that the damage was close enough to a whole. I had what I needed, and I was going to use it properly.Lark watched me work without talking. Mark was quieter than usual too.The three of us just existed in that room together for a little while, and it felt okay. Heavy but okay. When everything was ready,

  • Rejected But Elevated    Chapter 108

Cassie's POVI prepared the root that same evening.I didn't tell Lark how little I had to work with. I just set everything up the way Berta had described to Mark.Lark was sitting up in bed watching me move around the room. Mark was by the window. Neither of them was talking, which was fine because I didn't need conversation right now. All I needed were quiet and steady hands and about three times more root than I actually had."You don't have to look so serious," Lark teased.Quite a humor for a sick patient."I'm concentrating," I retorted.“Your facial expression reads more of worry than concentration,” he adjusted his sitting posture.I didn't respond to his last statement. I finished the preparation and brought everything to the bed and sat beside him and looked at him for a moment before I started. He looked better than he had a week ago. His melanin was coming back slowly. He was eating properly again. The shaking in his hands had reduced him to something almost manageabl

  • Rejected But Elevated    Chapter 107

Cassie's POVJoelle was on her knees before I even reached the courtyard.I heard the commotion from the corridor and came out to find her there in the dirt, head bowed, hands pressed flat on the ground in front of her like she was trying to make herself as small as possible. Petra was standing beside her looking pale. The two guards who'd ridden with them were off to the side and neither of them was meeting my eyes. That alone told me everything."Get up Joelle," I said. She didn't move. She just started talking to the ground."I'm sorry, Luna. I'm so sorry, I tried. I really tried, but the ground was frozen solid, and we couldn't get the root out cleanly, and I thought I had it but when I pulled—" her voice broke, "—it snapped. Right at the base. I didn't mean to, I swear I followed everything you said, but my hands slipped and—""Joelle." My voice came out sharper than I meant it to. "Get up."She got up slowly. Her face was red and wet and her hands were still shaking. She was ma

  • Rejected But Elevated    Chapter 106

Cassie's POVI was mixing Lark's morning treatment when the door opened and Mark walked in.He looked like someone who'd been riding hard and hadn't slept. His jacket was dusty, and his hair was pushed back in the way it got when he'd been running his hands through it repeatedly, which he only did when something was sitting heavy on him.Lark looked up from the bed. "Where have you been?"Mark pulled up a chair and sat down and looked at both of us. "Vale Pack."The spoon in my hand stopped moving.Does he know about the letter?"I went alone," he said before either of us could respond. "Before you say anything. I know. But I needed to find something, and I wasn't going to find it sitting here watching Sorin's face every morning."Lark's jaw tightened. "Mark—"Oh, it isn't about that, he went to find help for Lark."There's a healer," Mark said. "Her name is Berta. She's old. She trained with Sorin back then, and she knows things he doesn't." He looked at me directly. "She said it's n

The palace was filled with an unearthly calm, the kind that boded only an unraveling. It was the night of the Blood Moon, and all had the smell of ritual. Scarlet silk pennants flowed from the topmost arches, embroidered with silver runes to keep at bay ill omens. Lanterns glowed moonstone nestled

The palace kitchens remained at twilight, the dishes clinking and the chatter of the chefs faded to quiet several hours ago. But in the solarium—a glass room filled with moonlight that bathed rose gardens—candlelight sparkled warmly on a table for two. The scent of roasting lamb and sage was hardly

The palace's eastern wing dated from an earlier time than the others, built from darker stone and overgrown with ivy that brushed against the windows. This was where the ancient archives lay—a hollowed shrine of scrolls, relics, and tomes bound in dragonhide and strewn with wards of protection. Few

  • Rejected But Elevated    Chapter 17

Cassie’s POVWhen I arrived back at the palace, the dawn broke like a battered white color on the horizon. The servants were stirring, fire and wet earth scent filled the halls. I walked through the east wing, jaw set high, feet slow—towards a serenity I lacked. But all around me the air pulsed. As
