Kael did not look at Selene. He looked at the boy.

"What did you hear?"

"Only the end, Alpha." Pell's cap twisted tighter in his fists. "Something about the north fence at dawn, and someone hoping nothing finds her." His voice cracked. "Who's hoping that?"

Selene's hand slid down Kael's arm and settled over his ring, light and warm. "Nobody, Pell. We were speaking of the schedule. A lone sentry at a hedge is a risk, and I said I hoped no rogue would find her."

"Nobody, Pell. We were speaking of the schedule. A lone sentry at a hedge is a risk, and I said I hoped no rogue would find her." "You said it like a wish, Luna." "Pell," Brannic snapped from the rim, and the boy flinched. But Brannic's eyes were on Kael, waiting, the way he had waited over Mabon's body. Kael felt the old note scratch inside his sleeve. He could say it was nothing. He could sign the transfer, send the boy away, and let a girl walk a hedge alone at dawn while Selene smiled over her wine. And then he would no longer be a man who made terrible choices. He would be a man who had made that one. "Brannic. You're back on the rotation as of

Kael slid down the last ten feet of the ravine wall on his heels and dropped to his knees beside Mabon. "Don't bother, Alpha," Brannic called from the rim. "He's been cold for hours." Kael pressed two fingers to the old man's throat anyway. Skin like cold wax. An arrow stood out of Mabon's back below the left shoulder blade, and a few feet away his herb basket lay overturned, dried lavender scattered across the stones, his walking stick snapped clean in two. "Who found him?" "My lads. Luna took me off the patrol rotation for a week, remember? So I took the boys hunting to keep them from brooding. We cut across the south trail at first light." "Nobody hunts the south trail. The game's too thin." "That's what I said to myself." Brannic came down the slope slower than he needed to, scarred hands hanging between his knees as he crouched. "Broadhead, goose fletching, the kind every hunter in the pack carries. It went in from behind and above, from the trail's edge. A man bent over hi

Selene laid the parchment on the council table hard enough to make the inkwells jump. "The new patrol schedule," she said. "Sealed and binding as of this morning." Eleven elders and senior warriors stared at the page. Kael sat at the head of the table, and when his gaze dropped to the seal at the bottom of the sheet, the red wax pressed in the shape of his own ring, his thumb moved across the bare base of his ring finger, where a pale line of wax had dried. Selene smiled at him, sweet for the room. "My lord sealed it at dawn, before the council convened. He was most insistent that it not wait for the sun to rise on another day of dithering." Nobody spoke. Kael could not call it a forgery without explaining why he had refused to seal it, and he could not explain that without explaining where he had gone at midnight three nights ago. She had counted on exactly that. "The Luna's schedule has merit," Osric put in quickly from beside her chair, a nervous man who knew whose coin paid

"Darius?"Aurora's hands were still on his face. His skin had gone hot beneath her palms, hot as a fever."That is not Darius," said the voice that was not his.She snatched her hands back. "Draven?""Yes."He did not blink. The warding stones kept humming around them, low and trembling, and a thin line of blood slid from Darius's nose over his lip. Aurora's stomach dropped."You're hurting him.""I am not.""His nose is bleeding. He took a blow to the skull an hour ago, and you're sitting in his head like it's a throne." She pulled the strip of cloth from his ribs and pressed it under his nose. "Give him back.""He is here. He is fighting me, very hard, for a man with a broken head and a shoulder you put back by hand." The words rolled slowly, heavy, as though each one had to be lifted. "I hold his pain away so he can speak at all. You should be grateful.""Grateful for what? His pupils are still uneven. If the pain is gone, he can't tell me when it gets worse.""Then watch him, litt

Aurora hit the ground beside Darius on her knees and flattened two fingers against his throat. "Come on. Come on, you bastard." A pulse. Thready, fast, but there. She tilted his head back with both hands, felt his breath warm across her wrist, and the world started again around her. Blood slicked her palm from the cut at his temple. His white shirt was torn from collarbone to ribs, and his left shoulder sat wrong, dropped and lopsided under the skin. "Darius. Look at me. Open your eyes." Nothing. "Don't you dare." She pressed the heel of her hand against the cut. "You said stop means stop. You said it, you arrogant, stubborn ass, so you don't get to do this." Lyra stirred in her chest, urgent and bright, and silver crawled back up Aurora's wrists. "No." Aurora snatched her hands off him as though he were on fire. "Stay back. Don't you touch him." The silver faded. Her palms shook so hard she had to clamp them against her thighs. "Nobody's coming," she said aloud, to the empty

The wooden blade stopped against Aurora's ribs, and she hit the dirt for the fourth time in an hour."Dead," Darius said."I know I'm dead." She spat grit. "Stop announcing it.""Then stop dying."He held out a hand. She slapped it aside and shoved herself up on her own, breathing hard. The old training ground behind Kingswood's east wall was ringed with warding stones, silent and gray in the early light, and he had cleared it of every other living soul before she arrived. No guards, no servants, nobody to watch her fall."You're fighting like a healer," he said."I am a healer.""Lyra isn't." He tossed the practice blade from one hand to the other, white shirt open at the throat, sleeves shoved to the elbow. "How is he?""Rowan?" She wiped her mouth with the back of her wrist. "Fever broke at dawn. The healer says he sleeps two more days before he can answer anything. The captain hasn't left that tent.""And you went to look anyway before you came here.""Don't start.""I'm not star
