"He humiliated me."

Selene's voice cracked through her private chambers, sharp enough that the two advisors seated across from her flinched in unison. She hadn't bothered changing out of the frost colored gown from the ceremony, hadn't bothered doing anything except pace the length of the room since the moment Darius Blackwood walked out of that clearing with a prize that was supposed to have made her the most envied woman in three territories. Every step she took across the stone floor felt like it was grinding down another layer of the composure she'd spent years perfecting, until she wasn't entirely certain how much of it remained.

"My lady, the situation is unusual, but hardly a reflection on you personally."

"Everyone in that clearing watched me get overshadowed by a rejected nobody in front of every witness that mattered." Selene rounded on the advisor, a thin, nervous man named Osric who had served Moonfang's council for longer than she'd been alive. "That is entirely a reflection on me. My marriage was supposed to be the story leaving that ceremony tonight. Instead every pack in this kingdom will be talking about Aurora Ashwood by morning, and I will be nothing but a footnote in her sudden good fortune, remembered only as the woman standing beside Kael when his own brother swooped in and stole the real story out from under both of us."

"What would you have us do?" Osric asked carefully, clearly unwilling to offer suggestions of his own before understanding exactly what she wanted to hear.

"Fix it." Selene resumed pacing, mind already turning through options faster than her advisors could track. "Aurora spent three years building a reputation in this pack as the dutiful, beloved healer's apprentice. That reputation needs to change before anyone starts comparing what they lost to what they've gained tonight. People will remember tonight for years. I intend to control what exactly they remember about it."

The second advisor, a broader woman named Fenna who had always struck Selene as more useful than her cautious counterpart, leaned forward. "Change it how, exactly?"

"Rumors don't need much encouragement once the right seed is planted. A whisper here, a carefully worded doubt there." Selene's mouth curved, cold satisfaction settling in despite the humiliation still burning under her skin. "Let it be known that Aurora's departure with the King's son wasn't quite the fairy tale claiming it appeared to be. That perhaps a woman doesn't simply become the obsession of a man like Darius Blackwood without offering him something rather more calculated than fate."

Osric's brow furrowed, clearly uncomfortable with the direction this was heading. "You want us to suggest she seduced him deliberately?"

"I want the pack to wonder if she did. Wondering is enough. It doesn't need to be true, it only needs to make people uncertain who to admire." Selene poured herself a glass of wine with hands that had finally stopped shaking. "Aurora built her entire reputation on being the pack's beloved innocent. Strip that away, even partially, and Kael's decision tonight starts looking a great deal wiser to everyone watching, myself included, if I'm being honest about what I need from this."

"And if word reaches Kingswood? The King's son isn't likely to take kindly to rumors about his claimed mate, and if he traces it back to this pack, the consequences could fall on all of us, not only on you."

"By the time it reaches Kingswood, it will simply be pack gossip too diffuse to trace back to any single source." Selene's smile sharpened, confidence returning to her voice as the plan solidified further in her mind. "That's the advantage of rumors, Osric. No one ever remembers exactly where they started, only that everyone seems to be saying it, and by then it's simply become part of the story people tell without questioning where it came from."

Fenna nodded slowly, already calculating logistics in the practical way that had made her useful for years. "I know three wives among the senior warriors who'd repeat almost anything if it came wrapped in enough sympathy for Kael. I can have the seed planted by morning, quietly enough that no one traces it back further than idle gossip over breakfast."

"Do it quietly. I want this looking like it grew on its own, not like something I ordered. If anyone asks, you heard it from someone else entirely, and you can't quite recall who."

The two advisors rose, murmuring assurances, and slipped out through the side door Selene kept for exactly this kind of business, conversations that never officially happened, arrangements that left no trail back to her private chambers, doors that had served her well in the months of planning that led to tonight's ceremony in the first place.

Alone, Selene set down her wine glass and crossed to the small writing desk tucked into the corner of the room, the one she'd had installed herself rather than trust the pack's shared study where anyone might notice which letters she penned and to whom, a precaution that had already saved her more than once over the past year. She pulled a fresh sheet of paper toward her, dipped her quill, and paused, considering her words carefully before committing them to ink, mindful that even a moment's carelessness here could unravel months of careful arrangement.

The failure tonight wasn't only a matter of pride. Darius Blackwood's arrival had complicated arrangements she'd spent months putting into place, arrangements that required Aurora Ashwood remaining exactly where everyone expected her to remain, isolated and humiliated within Moonfang's borders, easy to watch, easier still to eventually remove when the time came. Instead the girl was on her way to Kingswood under the protection of the Alpha King's own son, wrapped in walls Selene had no easy way to breach, guarded by warriors who answered to a crown rather than a pack she could quietly influence from within, surrounded now by resources far beyond anything Moonfang alone could have offered protection against.

That required informing people who did not tolerate failure gracefully, people whose patience she had cultivated carefully over many months and had no intention of squandering with an incomplete report.

She wrote quickly, in a cipher she'd learned years ago from a contact who no longer answered to any pack, one that turned plain words into something unreadable to anyone who didn't already possess the key, a skill she'd acquired long before Kael Blackwood ever crossed her mind as a suitable match. The message itself stayed brief, stripped of anything that might betray urgency or fear to whoever read it on the receiving end. Complications at the ceremony. The target has been moved to Kingswood under royal protection. New approach required. Awaiting instruction.

She sealed the letter with plain wax, no crest, no mark that could ever be traced back to Moonfang or to her, and crossed to the window overlooking the eastern woods where a hooded figure waited in the shadow of the tree line, exactly where he waited every third night, exactly as he had for the past two months since Selene first made contact with people whose reach extended far beyond any single pack's borders, people who had promised her far more than a marriage to Kael Blackwood ever could on its own.

She opened the window and let the sealed letter drop into the waiting hand below, watching the figure melt back into the darkness without a single word exchanged between them, the entire transaction as practiced and silent as it had become over the last several weeks of careful correspondence.

Behind her, the fire crackled low in the hearth, and Selene allowed herself, finally, a single unsteady breath, the first honest moment of weakness she'd permitted herself since the ceremony ended hours ago.

Aurora Ashwood had escaped the trap laid for her tonight. That single, infuriating fact didn't mean the trap was gone. It only meant Selene would need to build a larger one, patient enough to wait, careful enough to hide every trace of her hand in its construction, and ruthless enough to finish what tonight had only begun, whatever shape that finishing eventually took.

She turned from the window and closed it firmly behind her, already composing the next piece of the plan in her mind, the coded message already on its way toward whatever answer would come back to her within days, an answer that would determine exactly how much more careful, or how much more ruthless, she would need to become before this was finally over.

"Close ranks," Darius said quietly, and the guards flanking them shifted formation without a word of question, moving as one body around a man they clearly obeyed on instinct rather than orders.Aurora had spent her whole life inside a single pack's walls, and had thought Moonfang's warriors were impressive in their discipline. Watching Darius's men move now, she understood for the first time how small her whole frame of reference had actually been. The road climbed steadily as they went, and when the trees finally broke open onto open hills, Aurora stopped walking entirely, breath catching in her throat.Kingswood rose out of the mountainside itself, not built beside it but carved into it, towers scraping clouds that had gathered low and heavy over the peaks. Torches lined walls too high to climb and too old to have been built by anyone still living, and even from this distance she could see guards posted at intervals that suggested a fortress prepared for war rather than a simple

"You're really leaving tonight."Elder Bram's voice rasped from the narrow bed where he'd spent the better part of a year now, his body failing faster than any healer's remedy could slow. Aurora knelt beside him, one hand wrapped around his frail fingers, the small satchel she'd packed already slung over her shoulder."I don't have much choice," she said quietly. "It isn't safe for me here anymore, not after tonight.""It was never as safe as any of us pretended it was," he said. He coughed, a wet, rattling sound that made her chest ache to hear. "Your mother used to say the same thing. Right before she stopped saying much of anything at all."Aurora went still. "You knew my mother?" "Better than most. She trusted very few people in this pack, and for good reason, as it turned out." His eyes, milky with age but still sharp underneath it, found hers in the dim candlelight. "She trusted me enough to tell me things she never told anyone else. Things I promised to carry to my grave

"Stand down." Kael's voice shook with the effort of forcing command back into it, every syllable trembling at the edges despite how hard he was clearly fighting to sound certain. "Release her, or so help me, brother or not, I will call every warrior in this pack against you.""You could try," Darius said, and something in the flatness of it made the threat sound almost bored. The two brothers faced each other across the frozen clearing, and Aurora, still caught in the circle of Darius's arm, felt the tension between them settle over the crowd like a second, heavier weight than the one that had already dropped everyone to their knees. No one moved to enforce Kael's threat. No one dared. She could feel the eyes of every warrior in the clearing calculating odds none of them liked, weighing loyalty to their Alpha against the very real possibility that answering his call meant walking straight into something none of them would walk back out of."You have no authority here at all," Ka

The eyes moved. They came steady through the black space between the trees, unhurried, and the branches parted around whatever carried them without so much as a rustle, as though the forest itself understood better than to get in the way. Aurora's pulse hammered against her throat, some old animal instinct screaming at her to run even as her feet refused to obey it, rooted to the stone stairs like the pressure itself had nailed her boots in place. Beside her, she could hear Selene's breathing gone shallow and fast, and behind them both, the collective silence of five hundred kneeling wolves pressed down harder than the strange weight in the air ever could have on its own."Someone answer me," Kael said, louder this time, though his voice had lost every ounce of its usual command. "Who is that?"Nobody moved to answer him. Nobody could. The pressure bearing down on the clearing had pinned five hundred wolves to their knees, and Aurora, still upright only because some stubborn part

"I, Alpha Kael Blackwood, reject you, Aurora Ashwood, as my mate."The words hit her like a fist to the ribs.Aurora's knees locked. For one absurd second she thought she had misheard him, that the wind off the training fields had twisted his voice into something cruel. Then she saw his face. Calm. Certain. Not even the decency to look ashamed. Three years of quiet promises, of late nights spent planning a future together, and he stood there delivering her destruction with the same composed expression he used for approving trade agreements.Around them, the entire Moonfang Pack stood frozen under the rising moon, hundreds of eyes swinging from their Alpha to the woman he had just humiliated in front of every soul who mattered. The Mate Ceremony altar, draped in silver cloth and moonflowers she had helped weave herself that morning, suddenly felt like a stage built for her execution."Kael." Her voice cracked on his name, and she hated herself for it. "Why?""Selene will stand besid
