Elara's POV

Ryker's second letter arrived three days later, and I read it standing in the library with Kael beside me, the fire crackling low in the hearth while the weight of every revelation settled heavier with each line, my mother's decades of being watched.

The arrangement passed down through generations of Ashwood Alphas, and finally, the location of a chapel ruin two days' ride north, where Ryker believed the old cause gathered whenever their decisions required more than a single voice.

"He's giving us everything," I said, lowering the letter once I'd finished, still trying to absorb the full shape of what it meant.

"His father's confession, the arrangement, even the location of their meeting place. He's risking everything to make this right."

"He is," Kael agreed, though I could hear the careful caution underneath his voice. "Which is either exactly what it appears to be, a genuine attempt at redemption, or precisely the kind of information someone might feed us if they wanted to lure us somewhere specific under the guise of an opportunity too valuable to ignore."

The thought hadn't fully occurred to me until he said it, and something cold settled in my stomach at the possibility, because trusting Ryker again after everything already felt like a risk, and trusting information that might lead us directly into a trap felt considerably worse.

"You think it's a trick," I said.

"I think we can't afford to assume it isn't, however much I want to believe he's telling the truth," Kael said.

"Not until we've verified what we can independently. Soren still has contacts throughout the northern territories. If a group calling themselves the old cause has been using that chapel ruin for generations, there should be some trace of it, some rumor or record beyond Ryker's word alone."

Nyra, who'd been quietly listening from her usual chair near the archive shelves, spoke up before I could respond.

"There's something in the old texts that might help. A reference, brief, easy to miss unless you already knew what you were looking for, to a gathering place near the northern border used by those who opposed the Moon Heir's return centuries ago.

I dismissed it initially as too vague to be useful. Perhaps it isn't."

She pulled the relevant text, and after several minutes of careful searching, found the passage, a description of stone ruins near a frozen river, close enough to the description Ryker had provided that even Kael's careful skepticism seemed to waver slightly.

"That's either remarkable coincidence," Soren said, joining us with the map from the courtyard investigation still tucked under his arm, "or confirmation that whatever's meeting there has been meeting there for a very long time, regardless of whether Ryker's telling the full truth about his own intentions in sharing it with us."

"So what do we do," I asked. "Ignore the information entirely because it might be a trap? Or risk walking into exactly what Kael's worried about?"

"Neither," Kael said, after a long moment of consideration.

"We investigate carefully, from a distance, before committing to anything as direct as approaching the ruin itself. Soren, can you send scouts, quietly, someone skilled enough to observe without being detected? If there's genuine activity at that location, we'll know soon enough whether Ryker's information holds true."

"I can have someone there within four days," Soren said. "Careful, patient work. It won't be fast, but it'll be safer than riding in blind."

The plan settled into place, and over the following days, I found myself caught between gratitude toward Ryker for his willingness to risk everything and lingering uncertainty about whether that gratitude was misplaced, whether the boy who'd once called me weak in front of the entire pack had truly changed enough to be trusted with something this significant, or whether old loyalties to his father and his pack might still be pulling him in directions none of us could fully see.

Mira, predictably, had strong opinions on the matter when I mentioned my uncertainty during one of our evening wedding planning sessions, though tonight the fabric samples and flower arrangements sat forgotten on the table between us.

"I don't trust him," she said flatly. "Not because I think he's lying, necessarily, but because trust isn't something you rebuild with two letters and a confession about his father's crimes.

He humiliated you in front of the entire pack, Elara. Whatever guilt he's carrying now doesn't erase that."

"I know," I said. "I'm not asking you to trust him. I'm just trying to figure out whether the information he's given us is trustworthy, even if he isn't entirely."

"Those aren't always separate things," Mira said, though her tone had softened slightly. "But for what it's worth, I don't think he's lying about this particular part.

I remember him as a kid, before his father's expectations hardened him into someone crueler. There was always something soft in him, buried under all that pride. I think whatever happened after the rejection cracked that pride open enough to let the soft part back out."

I considered her words carefully, turning them over alongside everything else, and found myself hoping she was right, hoping that whatever Ryker had become in the months since the ceremony was someone genuinely trying to atone rather than someone still, consciously or not, serving purposes that weren't fully his own.

Soren's scouts returned six days later, exhausted from hard travel but carrying confirmation that settled the question with more certainty than any of us had expected, the chapel ruin was indeed active, small gatherings observed over two nights, careful and cautious, hooded figures arriving separately and departing before dawn, exactly the kind of secretive pattern that matched everything Mathis and Ryker had described.

"There's more," the lead scout said, once he'd finished his initial report, exhaustion giving way to something more urgent.

"On the second night, we overheard fragments of conversation, careful, low voices, but enough to catch a few clear words. They're planning something for the night of the wedding itself. Whatever it is, they intend to act while all of Nightfall Hollow's attention is focused on the ceremony."

The room went silent, the weight of that single piece of information settling heavier than everything that had come before it, because whatever vague, distant threat the old cause had represented until now suddenly carried a date attached to it, a deadline drawing closer with every passing day of wedding preparations that had, until this moment, felt like the happiest planning of my entire life.

Elara's POVThe letter sat unopened on the table for a long moment, all of us simply staring at it like it might change shape if we looked away, and I found myself reaching for it slowly, my hands not quite steady as I finally broke the unfamiliar seal, pressed with an emblem I didn't recognize, a sun rising over waves."Read it aloud," Kael said quietly, his hand finding the small of my back, steady and grounding.I cleared my throat and began, the formal, careful language of the letter settling strange and heavy into the quiet library.*To Elara Ashwood, now Elara Draven, Queen of Nightfall Hollow. Word has reached our shores of the curse broken within your husband's bloodline, and of the manner in which it was achieved. This news, combined with certain details regarding your origins that have recently come to our attention, compels us to ask directly what we have wondered for over two decades. Are you the daughter of Marielle Sunhaven, who vanished from our kingdom before her arran

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 50

Elara's POVWe stayed in Ashwood territory for three more days, longer than I'd originally planned, though something about sitting with Alpha Cross through his slow decline felt important in a way I hadn't expected when Ryker's letter first arrived, less about him and more about giving myself the chance to close a door properly instead of leaving it hanging open the rest of my life."Do you think he'll recover," Kael asked quietly, the evening before we planned to return to Nightfall Hollow, both of us sitting on the small balcony outside the guest room the pack had prepared for us."I don't know," I admitted. "Nyra said guilt like that doesn't always resolve simply because someone finally speaks it aloud. Sometimes the body's already too worn down by the years of carrying it silently.""How do you feel about that possibility?"I considered the question honestly, turning it over before answering. "Strange. I thought I'd feel some kind of satisfaction, watching him face consequences af

Elara's POVI opened Ryker's letter in the quiet of the library, Kael reading through yet another diplomatic request beside me, and something in the careful, uneven handwriting told me before I'd even finished the first line that this wasn't simply another update on his father's cooperation with the northern packs."My father is dying. Not from illness, not from any attack, but from something the healers here can't explain, a weakness that's settled into him since the night he finally told the northern packs everything he knew. They say it looks like the wolf itself is losing its hold on him, faster than old age alone should account for. I don't know what this means, or whether it connects to anything you and Nyra might understand better than our own pack healers do, but I didn't know who else to ask.I read it twice, my stomach tightening with an unexpected complexity of feeling, because whatever cruelty Alpha Cross had shown me, whatever fear and ambition had driven decades of watc

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 48

Elara's POVWord of the curse breaking spread through Nightfall Hollow before the sun had even fully risen, servants and guards alike unable to contain their disbelief and joy once Nyra confirmed what she'd witnessed, and by midmorning, the castle had transformed into something I'd never quite seen before, genuine, unrestrained celebration replacing the careful, watchful tension that had lived in these halls for as long as I'd known them."A hundred years," Soren kept repeating throughout the morning, shaking his head like he still couldn't quite believe it himself, pulling Kael into a rough embrace that had nothing formal or careful about it at all. "A hundred years, and it took one omega from a small pack barely six months to undo what every healer and scholar in three kingdoms couldn't manage in a century.""She's not just an omega," Kael said, though there was no correction in his tone, only warmth, and pride, and something achingly soft as he looked at me across the room. "She's

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 47

Elara's POVNyra found me in the library on a bright, unremarkable afternoon, several weeks after Selene's sentencing had finally closed that long chapter of fear, and the careful, thoughtful expression on her face told me immediately that whatever she'd come to discuss carried real weight, even if the danger behind it had nothing to do with old enemies or ancient conspiracies."I want to examine the mark again," she said, settling into the chair across from mine. "Properly, now that things have quieted enough to actually study it without the pressure of an active threat clouding every observation. I've been curious for weeks whether the bond has changed since the wedding, now that the vows are fully sealed."I held out my wrist without hesitation, watching her turn it carefully in the afternoon light, tracing the familiar crescent moon and thorns with the same careful attention she'd shown that very first night in the cottage, though her expression this time carried curiosity rather

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 46

Elara's POVThe ride back to Nightfall Hollow felt entirely different from the tense journey north, the guards moving with visible relief despite the exhaustion carved into every face, Selene and her remaining followers bound and escorted at the center of our group, and though the danger that had shadowed us for weeks finally felt like it was loosening its grip, I found myself watching her carefully throughout the ride, unable to fully trust the quiet resignation she'd shown in the ruin."You keep looking back at her," Kael observed quietly, riding close beside me as the first real light of morning spread gold across the frosted fields."I keep waiting for it to feel finished," I admitted. "We caught her. She surrendered. And yet something in my chest still feels like it's bracing for one more thing to go wrong.""That's fair," he said. "We've been bracing for months. It doesn't simply stop because the danger has passed. Give it time, Elara. I imagine it'll take both of us a while to
