Elara's POV

The kiss barely broke before Kael's head snapped toward the sound, every ounce of the soft, reverent warmth from a moment ago hardening instantly into the sharp, focused King I'd first met in the forest, and I felt my own pulse spike in response, the joy of the completed vows tangling immediately with the fear we'd spent weeks preparing to face.

"It's done," Nyra said quickly, her voice steady despite the shouting growing louder beyond the chapel walls. "The bond is sealed, fully, completely. Whatever they intended to disrupt, they're already too late."

"That doesn't mean they'll simply leave quietly," Kael said, already moving toward the chapel doors, though he kept one hand firmly wrapped around mine, refusing to let the distance between us grow even as his attention split toward whatever was unfolding in the garden.

"Soren should have this contained. I need to see for myself."

"Then I'm coming with you," I said, and though I saw the flicker of protective instinct rise in his expression, the same instinct that had wanted to keep me safely behind him at the border months ago, he didn't argue this time, only nodded once, understanding now, fully, that facing danger together had become simply how we operated.

We moved quickly through the castle halls, Mira and the guards falling into step around us, and by the time we reached the edge of the garden, the scene spread out before us told a story already mostly resolved, guards positioned exactly where Soren had planned, several hooded figures restrained on the ground, the lantern still burning steadily in the window exactly where Wren had placed it, having drawn the old cause's attention precisely into the trap we'd built for them.

"Six of them," Soren reported, jogging over the moment he spotted us, a shallow cut along one arm the only visible sign of any real struggle.

"Caught the moment they breached the garden wall, expecting an empty ceremony still in progress. They weren't prepared for guards already in position."

"Casualties," Kael asked, scanning the scene with sharp, careful eyes.

"None on our side. A few injuries among them, nothing fatal." Soren's expression turned grimmer. "One thing you should know, though.

The woman leading them, the one with the signet ring matching what Mathis described, she's not among the restrained. She got away before we could close the perimeter fully."

The relief of the successful trap dimmed slightly at that news, and I felt Kael's hand tighten around mine, some of the fierce satisfaction from a moment ago giving way to renewed wariness.

"We'll find her," Kael said, though his voice carried more determination than certainty. "For now, let's see what the ones we did catch are willing to tell us."

The restrained figures offered little at first, sullen and silent despite Soren's careful questioning, though one among them, younger than the others, visibly shaken by the sudden collapse of whatever plan they'd carried into the garden, finally broke under the weight of his own fear.

"She'll kill us for failing," he said, his voice cracking. "Please. I'll tell you whatever you want to know, if it means protection from what happens once she learns we failed."

"Who is she," Kael asked, crouching down to meet the young man's eyes directly. "Give us a name, and we'll ensure your safety."

"Selene," the young man said. "That's all I know her as. She leads the old cause now, has for the past decade, since her own mother led it before her. She won't simply give up because tonight failed. She's spent her whole life believing this is her purpose, protecting what she calls the natural order."

"Where would she go now," I asked, stepping forward despite Kael's protective instinct visibly wanting to keep me back. "If tonight's plan failed, where would she regroup?"

The young man hesitated, clearly weighing fear against whatever loyalty remained, before finally answering. "The chapel ruin. Where you've already discovered us meeting before. It's the only place she'd consider safe enough to reconvene, especially now that she knows the wedding itself is already beyond reach."

Kael exchanged a look with Soren, something decided passing silently between them, and I recognized immediately the shape of whatever plan was already forming in both their minds.

"We move on the ruin," Kael said. "Tonight, while she's still reeling from tonight's failure, before she has time to regroup fully or relocate somewhere we can't easily trace."

"Kael," I said carefully, "it's our wedding night."

Something softened in his expression at that, guilt and determination warring visibly behind his eyes. "I know. I hate that I even have to consider this tonight, of all nights.

But if we wait, if we give her time to recover and plan again, we simply postpone this exact danger to whatever moment she chooses next, and I refuse to spend the rest of our lives together waiting for the next attempt instead of ending this properly while we finally have the advantage."

I thought about it for a long moment, the fear of moving against them so directly warring against the exhaustion of a threat that had followed us since before the engagement even began, and finally, I nodded, understanding settling into place alongside my own fierce resolve.

"Then let's go together," I said. "Tonight. I won't let this shadow follow us into our marriage a single day longer than it has to."

Kael studied me for a long moment, something proud and fierce and achingly tender all mingled together in his expression, before he finally nodded, turning to Soren with quiet, decisive authority.

"Gather what guards we can spare without leaving the castle vulnerable," he said. "We ride within the hour. Tonight, we end this properly, once and for all."

Elara's POVThe letter sat unopened on the table for a long moment, all of us simply staring at it like it might change shape if we looked away, and I found myself reaching for it slowly, my hands not quite steady as I finally broke the unfamiliar seal, pressed with an emblem I didn't recognize, a sun rising over waves."Read it aloud," Kael said quietly, his hand finding the small of my back, steady and grounding.I cleared my throat and began, the formal, careful language of the letter settling strange and heavy into the quiet library.*To Elara Ashwood, now Elara Draven, Queen of Nightfall Hollow. Word has reached our shores of the curse broken within your husband's bloodline, and of the manner in which it was achieved. This news, combined with certain details regarding your origins that have recently come to our attention, compels us to ask directly what we have wondered for over two decades. Are you the daughter of Marielle Sunhaven, who vanished from our kingdom before her arran

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 50

Elara's POVWe stayed in Ashwood territory for three more days, longer than I'd originally planned, though something about sitting with Alpha Cross through his slow decline felt important in a way I hadn't expected when Ryker's letter first arrived, less about him and more about giving myself the chance to close a door properly instead of leaving it hanging open the rest of my life."Do you think he'll recover," Kael asked quietly, the evening before we planned to return to Nightfall Hollow, both of us sitting on the small balcony outside the guest room the pack had prepared for us."I don't know," I admitted. "Nyra said guilt like that doesn't always resolve simply because someone finally speaks it aloud. Sometimes the body's already too worn down by the years of carrying it silently.""How do you feel about that possibility?"I considered the question honestly, turning it over before answering. "Strange. I thought I'd feel some kind of satisfaction, watching him face consequences af

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 49

Elara's POVI opened Ryker's letter in the quiet of the library, Kael reading through yet another diplomatic request beside me, and something in the careful, uneven handwriting told me before I'd even finished the first line that this wasn't simply another update on his father's cooperation with the northern packs."My father is dying. Not from illness, not from any attack, but from something the healers here can't explain, a weakness that's settled into him since the night he finally told the northern packs everything he knew. They say it looks like the wolf itself is losing its hold on him, faster than old age alone should account for. I don't know what this means, or whether it connects to anything you and Nyra might understand better than our own pack healers do, but I didn't know who else to ask.I read it twice, my stomach tightening with an unexpected complexity of feeling, because whatever cruelty Alpha Cross had shown me, whatever fear and ambition had driven decades of watc

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 48

Elara's POVWord of the curse breaking spread through Nightfall Hollow before the sun had even fully risen, servants and guards alike unable to contain their disbelief and joy once Nyra confirmed what she'd witnessed, and by midmorning, the castle had transformed into something I'd never quite seen before, genuine, unrestrained celebration replacing the careful, watchful tension that had lived in these halls for as long as I'd known them."A hundred years," Soren kept repeating throughout the morning, shaking his head like he still couldn't quite believe it himself, pulling Kael into a rough embrace that had nothing formal or careful about it at all. "A hundred years, and it took one omega from a small pack barely six months to undo what every healer and scholar in three kingdoms couldn't manage in a century.""She's not just an omega," Kael said, though there was no correction in his tone, only warmth, and pride, and something achingly soft as he looked at me across the room. "She's

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 47

Elara's POVNyra found me in the library on a bright, unremarkable afternoon, several weeks after Selene's sentencing had finally closed that long chapter of fear, and the careful, thoughtful expression on her face told me immediately that whatever she'd come to discuss carried real weight, even if the danger behind it had nothing to do with old enemies or ancient conspiracies."I want to examine the mark again," she said, settling into the chair across from mine. "Properly, now that things have quieted enough to actually study it without the pressure of an active threat clouding every observation. I've been curious for weeks whether the bond has changed since the wedding, now that the vows are fully sealed."I held out my wrist without hesitation, watching her turn it carefully in the afternoon light, tracing the familiar crescent moon and thorns with the same careful attention she'd shown that very first night in the cottage, though her expression this time carried curiosity rather

  • Rejected By My Alpha Mate, Claimed By The Cursed Lycan King    Chapter 46

Elara's POVThe ride back to Nightfall Hollow felt entirely different from the tense journey north, the guards moving with visible relief despite the exhaustion carved into every face, Selene and her remaining followers bound and escorted at the center of our group, and though the danger that had shadowed us for weeks finally felt like it was loosening its grip, I found myself watching her carefully throughout the ride, unable to fully trust the quiet resignation she'd shown in the ruin."You keep looking back at her," Kael observed quietly, riding close beside me as the first real light of morning spread gold across the frosted fields."I keep waiting for it to feel finished," I admitted. "We caught her. She surrendered. And yet something in my chest still feels like it's bracing for one more thing to go wrong.""That's fair," he said. "We've been bracing for months. It doesn't simply stop because the danger has passed. Give it time, Elara. I imagine it'll take both of us a while to
