Aria's POV

“Miss Blackthorne, they insist on meeting you personally.”

Lord Harrington's announcement caught me by surprise.

“Now?” I asked, glancing at Madame Celeste.

“If you're willing. Lady Helena Marwood has another engagement this afternoon, but she'd like to speak with you before leaving.”

I knew Lady Marwood's name from the charitable events she organized for hospitals and schools.

“I'd be happy to meet her,” I replied. “I just wasn't expecting anyone to take such an interest in my drawi

Lucian's POV I woke to the sound of Aria struggling with the buttons at the back of her dress. She stood beside the bedroom window, twisting one arm behind her while her loose hair kept falling across her shoulder. Morning sunlight caught the pale blue fabric, and I watched her make another unsuccessful attempt before sitting up. “Come here before you tear something,” I said, reaching for my trousers. “Madame Celeste might forgive a damaged dress, but I doubt she'd appreciate having to repair it before you've worn it outside.” Aria turned, laughing as she pushed her hair aside. “I managed the first four buttons without assistance. It's the last two that seem determined to ruin my morning.” I dressed quickly and went to help her. The buttons were smaller than I'd expected, and she laughed again when I struggled with the second one. Once I'd finished, I kissed her shoulder, enjoying the warmth of her skin beneath my lips. She turned to face me, but her smile faded when she noticed

  • Rejected By My Family, Claimed By The Lycan Prince   Chapter 42: Unexpected Visitor

Lucian's POV By the time I reached Aria's house, the streets were nearly deserted. Father's demand that I marry Serena had followed me all the way from the palace. I'd argued with him until there was nothing left to say, yet I could still hear his refusal whenever the carriage fell quiet. I didn't want to spoil Aria's evening with news I hadn't worked out how to deliver. She opened the door in a loose nightdress, her hair falling over her shoulders. When she saw me, her surprise gave way to a smile that made the long journey feel worthwhile. “Lucian, I wasn't expecting you tonight. You could have sent word, and I would have waited up.” “I know. I left the palace later than I planned, but I wanted to see you before the night was over.” She stepped aside to let me in, then took my coat. “Have you eaten? There's supper left, and it won't take long to warm.” “I ate before leaving. Tell me about your day instead. Did Madame Celeste finish the gown you were worried about?” “Al

Lucian's POV“Father, I intend to marry Aria, and I want you to hear it from me before anyone else.”King Alaric lowered the document he'd been reading and removed his glasses. I'd requested a private audience so I could speak to him without Sebastian or the council interfering. After our last disagreement, I knew he wouldn't welcome the news, but I hadn't expected him to look quite so disappointed.“Have you asked her?” he asked, setting his glasses beside the papers.“Not yet. Aria has been through enough without me making decisions for her. I propose, I want her to have the freedom to accept or refuse.”“And you've already decided she's the woman you want to marry?”“Yes, Father. I love her, and I've never been more certain about anything concerning my future.”He motioned for me to sit, although he remained standing behind his desk. “I wish you'd spoken to me about this before allowing your relationship to become so public. You're aware of the objections that have already been rai

Aria's POV“Pack your things, Aria. You're coming home with us.”I looked up from the blue gown I was sewing and found my father standing at the entrance of Madame Celeste's workshop. Serena stood beside him, examining the dresses on display with obvious distaste.I hadn't expected to see either of them, especially after Serena's frightened departure from my house a few days earlier.“What are you doing here?” I asked, putting down my needle.Richard Blackthorne approached my table. “I've come to put an end to this nonsense with Prince Lucian. Your mother and I have decided you should return home.”“You disowned me, Father. Remember?”“That doesn't mean I've stopped being your father.”“It didn't seem to matter when I was in prison.”His mouth tightened. “I'm not here to discuss the past. People are talking about your involvement with the Crown Prince, and I won't have our family dragged through another scandal.”Serena picked up a piece of lace from my table. “Imagine the embarrassme

Aria's POV “Are you planning to stare at me all morning?” I hadn't realized Lucian was awake. I'd been watching him sleep, wondering how the same man who had faced the royal council yesterday could look so peaceful in my bed. “I wasn't staring,” I protested. He opened his eyes and smiled. “Then why are you blushing?” “Because you're still in my bed, Your Highness.” “Would you prefer I leave?” He loosened his arm around my waist. I caught his hand before he could move. “Don't you dare.” Lucian laughed and pulled me closer, careful of my injured wrist. “Good morning, Aria.” “Good morning.” I smiled as he kissed my forehead, then my cheek. When his lips brushed mine, I slipped my good hand behind his neck and kissed him properly. “Someone's feeling brave this morning,” he murmured. “Perhaps I learned something last night.” “And what was that?” “That I don't have to be afraid of wanting you.” His smile softened. “And you don't have to be afraid with me.” I to

Aria's POV “Lucian, what happened?” I stepped aside as he entered my house. He looked troubled. “Can we sit down?” he asked. “You're frightening me.” He took my hand. “Sebastian and four Alphas raised an objection against you at the royal council today.” “Against me? Why?” “They don't want you considered as a future royal consort because of your conviction.” “We haven't even discussed marriage.” “I told them that. Sebastian is using our relationship to challenge my position as Crown Prince.” “And what did you say?” “That I wouldn't abandon you.” “Even if it costs you the throne?” “Aria, I love you. I won't let Sebastian decide whom I can love.” My eyes filled. “I love you too.” He kissed my forehead. “Is something else troubling you?” “Serena came here two days ago. We argued, and something happened to my eyes. She looked terrified.” “What happened afterward?” “I ordered her out. She left, but I don't understand what she saw.” “Are you hurt?” “No. Just frightened b
